$600 PS3s, Anyone?

PS3There's no denying it. Sony's PS3 is one costly console. It has been priced at an eye-watering $600 - $300 more than Microsoft's Xbox, and $350 more than the Nintendo Wii, according to JP Morgan analyst Hiroshi Takada. Some fans who await its release seem to have been disheartened by its hefty price tag. Even game developers agree it is quite expensive.

But it seems that Sony is the one who's going to suffer the most. As much as $2 billion might go down the drain in PS3s' first year, says Yuji Fujimori, an analyst for Goldman Sachs. Manufacturing costs amount to more than $750 for this lean machine.  Howard Stringer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sony Corporation of America says that "the price of the PS3 is high, but you're paying for potential."

Thing is, consumers may not be too eager to spend that much for "potential." Takada predicts that Sony might have to resort to slash its price to attract more buyers. Game advertisements and downloads (not free, mind you) are more like what Sony has in mind (to gain more revenue), however.

Gaming enthusiasts the world over are keeping their fingers crossed that Stringer will follow Takada's advice. Let's see how things shape up.

» Yep ME!!!

I am going to buy PS3. Maybe 2 or 3, I dunno.

I think $600 is not too bad? Why...

1. It is a complex technology console that it will feature new things such as the high-definition Blu-ray disc and ultrafast Cell chip.

2. The games are already pile of good stuffs at the begin.

3.Non-american stuff.

4. I'm really love japs' games

» hmm...

Here's a good way of looking at the PS3. Since it costs $200 more than a XBOX 360, just tell yourself that your getting a system that is greater or equal in power to the 360, and a Blueray player for $200. Now, doesn't that 200$ extra for a blueray player sound nice? Seeing how a standalone Blueray player goes for about $1000 nowadays it sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me:P

They slated the Wii at around $250, and the $400 x360 can be compared to the $500 PS3 (but not really, because of the BR drive). This is just more BS from those stupid marketing prediction crap companies that don't know anything and are either being paid to say this crap, or just felt like getting themselves known for saying something that everybody else is talking about.

Anyone who says $600 USD for a console isn't too much is full of it ..

The games are going to look marginally better at best than what the 360 games do and Blu-ray still hasn't won the format war... and honestly how many people use a console to watch movies instead of a stand alone player when movie quality on a console is always worse.

PS3 is nothing more than Sonys tool for shoving their new format down our throats and to pay for the R&D costs they incurred with the Cell processor.

The Cell in PS3 which will be watered down Just like Xenon in 360.. is maybe the equivalent of a Pentium D and RSX is a Slower 128 bit version of a 7900gt .

Yeah go ahead and buy into the hype..

the choice is yours...even if you think one may offer more..the consumer has the choice to get a core 360 with no hdd...or a core ps3 with no wifi, etc.

just because you think the core ps3 offers the same as the premium 360...doesn't mean the core 360 dissapears...

the consumers who just want a console to play just games still exisit...just as much as the core 360 still exist.

also i dont find xp to crash alot . this maybe since i have a high end pc. but xp is fine but... i remember the old days when windows 2000 used to crash everyday.thats one of the reasons why i started using macs.

now the 360 crashed on a daily bases...once ive even had it crash again right after i had it crash and restarted it.

LETS HOPE THE PS3 IS MORE STABLE

» good or bad value?

i'll tell you what, when i had no money the ps3 was bad value... why couldn't they just offer the capability to play games without 'forcing' their extras on me?

but now that i've found a job and intend to EARN myself a ps3 i am happy with the situation.

the bluray disc means more storage space on each disk, now although very few games take up more than 9 gigs it at least gives developers the option of including good hd content and more.

the bluray player will be good at playing bluray discs because the ps3 is basically a souped up pc and when you look at the specs of bluray / hddvd stand alone players they're simply slightly crippled pcs.

the cell processor and nividia's graphics solution don't mean that much to me, i've never seen either do anything, so meh. but i can say the package itself is delivering sumptuous visuals and will probably deliver on sony's promises.

the value of the ps3 online network is a tough one to gauge, although they say there's free gameplay online but we really don't know much about how extensive those free functions will be (what if it's only deathmatch or 'race' and then ctf or domination, assault or road rage, basically non obvious game modes)

and although i'm no fan of this ingame advertising idea i can see it offsetting costs that WE, the consumer, would otherwise have to pay.

with a 60 gig hdd you can store quite a bit, personally i'm not that sure it is large enough, i have filled my 320 gigs without much hassle...

i really would like the linux on the ps3 to be basically like a desktop pc would have, so we could just put whatever we liked wherever we liked... but if it's sony's xmb and it's all just using some 'linux kernel' then i can see them running those damn security updates like on psp.

time will tell. lets just be thankful that sony have actually started producing ps3s... it would really take the biscuit if another xbox360 launch flop happened.

» ps3 cost too much... but I'll buy one for sure!

I'll try to get the money, but I think I'll pass on the launch date, I think I'll have one in early 2k7 when all the good games I want will start showing up!

untold legends, final fantasy 13, metal gear solid 4, devil may cry 3? assassin's creed( looks GREAT and is made in my city =D montreal québec canada, it rocks ) anyway I played all Prince of persia and liked them ( but the second, it was not good at all, but I bought is used anyway )

and a lot more titles... maybe sonic, the video was wierd, this was a psy game? and not a fast game? wtf with sonic lol, anyway it looked good with all the wierd powers we can get, more an action/adventure game!

» What the F***!!!!!

Here's a good question.... Why the hell people are still saying the PS3 is $200 more than the 360? What happened to the $500 PS3. If you can't afford the $600 get the $500 one. It's still better than the Premium 360. For me it doesn't matter what PS3 I get as long as I am to get one. That's all that matters. So in closing I say F*** Microsoft and I hope their system ends up like the Dreamcast.

by Kojinto - 2006-07-20 19:57
» Consumers these days are a bunch of dumbass's

ok sure you can say that the PS3 is only $500 but if you did i would have to laugh my head off, because no matter what you will have to spend over $600 dollars. Lets do some calculations. Xbox360 core-$299.99, plus 3 games $59.99 each, plus 2 wired controllers $39.99 each, plus 2 accessories $19.99 each plus 2 dvd's at $14.99 each plus tax=$760.89

Now lets do it again but with the Xbox360 premium package. Xbox360 Premium-399.99 plus 3 games at $59.99 each plus 2 wired controllers $39.99 each plus 2 dvd's at $14.99 each plus tax=$820.53

Ok this time we will do it again with the $499.99 PS3 assuming games cost 69.99 each and controllers cost $59.99, accessories cost $19.99, and Blue Ray movies cost $29.99. 1 PS3, plus 3 games, plus 2 controllers, plus 2 blue ray movies (whats the point of buying a PS3 if your not going to take advantage of Blue Ray) plus tax=$985.69

Lets be real all this stuff if what a true hardcore fan would buy, if you bought a PS3 just for games then you need to seriously use that big gray thing in your head and REALLY think about what your doing!

now a $600 PS3, with 3 games, 2 controllers, 2 accessories, and 2 movies plus tax=$1169.74

So basically

$720.89 vs $985.69

and

$820.53 vs $1164.74 The choice is up to you, hopefully in the end you wont make an ass out of yourself, (although i highly doubt it)

» Let's see

You can't afford a PS3, and yet, you can afford a computer that's around $1200 to $2000. Not only that, you can also afford Windows Vista Ultimate Edition (around $ 450) to go with your PC.

The way I see it, if you can afford a computer, you can afford the PS3. If you can't a afford a computer or the PS3, then you need to accept the fact that you're poor and go get a job.

by Vietone - 2006-07-21 02:04
» 26 is an idiot

Your basing you price off what assumptions? That games will raise in price to 70 and controllers cost 60 bucks?

Blu-ray movies are less then 20 bucks for your information. Goto walmart or best buy, they are even cheaper then HD-DVD.

500 PS3, extra controllers at 40 each. Games at 60 each. Its been said that the Blu-ray media will have no affect in the price of the games. Development cost arent as high as people "assume".

When it comes to price comparisions

its Xbox360 Premium to PS3 core. Why? Because you compare features to features and the PS3 core is the closest thing you can compare to the Xbox360 premium.

Anyome comparing a PS3 premium to the Xbox360 premium is saying its ok to compare a BMW (PS3) to a Voltswagon (Xbox360).

Like the PS3, the BMW outclasses everything thats offered in an VW. Thats how it is. Power comparison, feature comparision and the PS3 wins without breaking a sweat.

Fo those who say the PS3 games will look marginally better? The "first" generation of PS3 games look better then the seconds generation of Xbox360 games. What does that tell you? The only thing that will be holding back the graphics of the PS3 is the Xbox360. EA is a multi-console developer, so they have to take into consideration of using the lowest common denominator. So EA games will probably look the same on both consoles. However first party developers will be able to push the graphics and gameplay way beyond what any Xbox360 game can do.

I will bet with anyone right now, That the last generation of PS3 ganes will be several times better then the last generation of Xbox360 games.

by TheProfessor - 2006-07-21 02:34
» Comparison

Ok Vecha so you can't leave out the core 360 package so here's a better diagram that takes the comment above and your diagram into consideration

Core 360 Vs PS2 or maybe even the Wii

Premium 360 Vs No equivalent

499 PS3 vs P 360 w/ HDDVD (that HDDVD addon better be 100 bucks or else not show up at all)

599 PS3 vs No Equivalent (maybe Wii + P 360 w/ HDDVD + Media PC )

If Sony released the 499 version only, people would not be comparing it to the core. It's really not fare for you to compare it to the Xbox core.

» believe what you want

I dont really care if the PS3 games are 1000 times better than the 360's and to me it doesnt really matter, because im going to stick to the xbox360 and nothing else. You are probably saying right now "what a dumbass why would he go with a system that is inferior" i will tell you why because i am not some rich ***** who gets his money from his parents, i also dont have a HD TV so BlueRay doesnt matter ***** to me. Plus the only reason those PS3 games look so good is becuase 1 half of those games are CGI trailers 2 they are on BlueRay disks so they will definetly look better and faster than 360 games becuase of the speed at which the BlueRay laser reads the disks.

I dont need to spend $200 to $500 more dollars on a system that gives me the same amount of entertainment as the 360 does.

Besides there are a bunch of 360 games that are coming out that are going to be very advanced when it comes to NextGen.

If you were as smart as i am you would have already realized this.

by . - 2006-07-21 12:00
» #31

Saying the 599 ps3 compares to two other next gen consoles and a hd dvd player and a media pc is just plain idiotic.

for me the next gen console to own is a 360 which i would prefer to either of the other consoles.

I dont want to get a hd dvd player or a bluray player so id just prefer to get a console without, than have one forced on me so buying the hd dvd player isnt neccesary for the people who will be buying the console for the games.

If the 360 was encased in gold and was on sale for 100,000 it might be worth its price tag but that doesnt mean its a good deal its same with the ps3 they put a bluray player in and everyone thinks its a bargain price for bluray but do you realy need it

and a core 360 vs PS2 wtf?? how does that work

also everyone who says $600 is cheap you are are just fat rich greasy americans living off daddies credit card

Im sure the ps3 will be good but all you fanboys have convinced yourself its a bargain

» ps3 better deal with linux

to number 34. its all about what you expect to get from ps3.

if your not going to use the bluray the free location or the massive amounts of other features.. yes your getting ripped off. if you want all that stuff you are saving a crap load of money, i mean just price out all the devices that you'd need to match what you get out of a 600 usd ps3. you save so much. its all about what you want. if you just want a game machine get a 360 or a wii.

and we are still getting a free linux box aren't we? I mean if we are still getting linux with it then its even better of a deal, its suddenly your home computer too. and a cell powered computer at that. I don't care what anyone says linux is the best os out there and if you disagree then you haven't tried it.

on the bright side of linux there are unlimited apps availible to you. I'm sure they will need some porting to work with cell but that also means there will so much homebrew work done for it. and there is no way that sony could sandbox out homebrew on linux. it would be against liscense agreements. you could also rip dvds music etc and there is nothing sony could do about it. use that with ps3 being a server and you suddenly have your home media center all setup. that combine with psp style homebrew and you have yourself a way better deal. everyone needs to look at the possibilities of having linux installed on the hdd. there are so many possibilites with that. if sony fails on delievering everything it promises there will still be groups of people out there doing home development for it so you will never fall short of having exciting new apps.

by zafle - 2006-07-22 08:29
» disc

oh yea...

and bluray is needed to deliver games at 1080p resolution. higher res and larger games need a larger sized disc size to hold all that data. i'm sure most people would rather have one bd disc vs 10 cds. its just natural to create new technology to support the other new technology. 360 will eventually run into disc capacity issues and there games will lack in comparison because of that. having bluray isn't just for movies, its more or less overlook as an assistant for delievering the game. its needed for all this hidef technology.

by Shatterdome - 2006-07-22 09:28
» ...

Just want to say to all the people comparing these prices and automatically adding the hd-dvd add-on for 360. That is not needed for gaming, and primarly people are comparing the systems for the ability to run games, as that's what gamers care about.

At this point I see more potential for 360 as far as games go, from a system that costs less.

The hd-dvd add-on cannot be mentioned, because it has no effect on games, and 90% of 360 owners DONT WANT IT...

by MGSROCKS1 - 2006-07-22 16:53
» I like blu-ray

What I like about Blu-ray is the fact that all region codes can be put on a one disk. Even all of the languages it would need to be converted to. This way, we don't have to wait almost a year to get a game from Japan (Final Fantasy anyone?).

As for the 360 running out of space, I don't think its gonna happen. It probably will Next-gen. I have a question for xbox fanboys. Microsoft said if HDDVD looses, they will not change their support to the format, what does that tell you? Don't say I'm making this up, because they were asked the question in the July issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly.

Stop crying about the PS3 price. If you can afford upgrading your PC ever 6 months, then you can buy a PS3. Plus don't call Sony fanboys idiots. If you the 360 costed $600 and the PS3 costed $400, would say anything bad about the 360. Didn't think so. If you have a 360, good for you. If you want to buy a PS3 go a head. I'm not gonna call someone who bought a 360 an idiot, because thats what interests you. The same goes for Wii and PS3.

hate to burst your bubble since you sound so sure of yourself. you are NOT paying for 7 processors, you are aware that the 7 spe's arent full fledged cores they are at most half cores in my book. the cell only has 1 real core and the cell is only a beast in math calculations not video games.

they are already running out of room on dvds so next gen is to late to fix that. if it weren't for the random character creation in oblivion they would have needed more then one dvd i'm sure.

what does your "wompa" have to do with what i said since "my book" is a technical fact and i didnt even mention bluray so your basically pulling things out of thin air im on a whole other topic with the cpu.

by sakura - 2006-07-25 06:46
» @39

its a nice idea but that wont make final fantasy come out any sooner multi regions on a dvd is for production cost not for speed. youd still have the delays of finding voice overs but now instead of waiting just for a english voice over youd have to wait till they get the italians and the spanish all in there. unless its a text based rpg but it would still take the same amount of time. its just a region coding perk. besides i think the whole idea of the 360 running out of dvd space is lame we still arent in the gen where titles require massive amounts of storage dual layer dvds will still be useful. i doubt sonys launch titles will surpass 6-7 gigs but theyll still be placed on blurays to force their format as useful. 50 gigs for a game is just too much. all sony has done is made an excuse to turn final fantasy into a full blown soap opera cinema with fmv's.
