30,000 PS3s lined up to do some Folding (@Home)

Folding@Home - Image 1Great news for all those PS3 owners out there now, including us. Not only are our home supercomputers helping to cure diseases; Game Industry reports that more than 30,000 of us signed up for the service.

According to their news report, 40,000 PS3 CPUs are already linked to the project, with three quarters of that actively performing calculations for Folding@Home! That's great news, and if we can help tons of people with our computing power when we're not doing anything, then so be it, right?

In any case, you may want to check our own QJ Folding team by joining 52781 (our QJ Folding@Home Team Number) or reading up on what Folding@Home does. In the meantime, we'll be shutting off our PS3 for a little break. We smelled smoke an hour ago, so the 48 hour Fold-a-thon we had planned worked, but possibly to our detriment.

» why not?

Shows how many people have nothing fun to do with their PS3. Might as well help science with the $600 folding protien calculator.

» great

Maybe we can cure PS3 soon

by Kutibh - 2007-03-26 01:14
» Smoke?

My PS3 has been on for 72 hours? Where'd you smell smoke? lol

by M$Hater - 2007-03-26 01:33
» Wish you could, but you can't

Well at least we can do it if we chose to. Unllike the Xblows 270, which you can't do f@h because Stanford won't LET you.

I do use my Xblows 270 to help with everyday household chores. It's a $400 Door Stop, right now, and I getting ready to open it up, and use it for a kitty litter box.

» ....

And another post bashing a Sony product Mr. Common Sense....Is that ALL you do here? I wonder why? You NEVER answer the question that has been asked at least 10 times.

» More like common douche

I have playing the hell out of Oblivion and Motorstorm, but whenever I'm not playing Folding@home is running. I am calculating out how much electricity I use while folding and will write it off as a charitable donation at the end of this year. Don't be jealous your xbox cant fold, it's too stupid to know how worthless it really is.

» I pledge allegiance to the PS3

I pledge allegiance to the PS3. It is a great machine. Processing power alone, makes stand head and shoulders above the other consoles.

» Mr. Common Sense

i guess you have nothing fun to do with your xbox 360 or wii if your on here all the time, why are you even on the ps3 section if you don't like it

by Luker - 2007-03-26 03:50
» Neat

That folding at ahome sounds neat, and would be a great university project.

You all need to grow up, your so easy, one little fame bait, and you guys jump up in arms. Fanboys like all of you are sad.

And i hope the Topic author was joking about the burning smell. Sounds scary to think 40,000 PS3 will be left on, possibly smoking as well?

by Me - 2007-03-26 03:56
» hacked?

why has the TFLOPS for PS3 gone down with more PS3s online? did someone hack Stanford computers? Maybe MS?

by Yo - 2007-03-26 04:09
» But you guys are no better.

MCS atttacks the PS3 so you all join in to attack the 360.

It would make a change if some of you guys could offer a sensible response, or at least attack MCS instead of the 360.

by GordLacey - 2007-03-26 04:09
» Fewer WU being processed

There's a thread in the F@H forum about why the TFLOPS dropped. Basically that's a calculation of how many calculations are done over a period of time, and during the weekend people stopped folding and started playing games, so instead of processing 3 work units a day they were only processing 1. Hopefully we see it climb again as people fold while they're at work. I'm processing my 11th unit right now.

» Smoke???

I've had my PS3 on and folding since the update on March 22nd, and it's still on! And it's running perfectly! No smoke, not hotness, it's a very well built machine.

by Shatterdome - 2007-03-26 07:02
» It's interesting...

That if you crunch the numbers, ATI GPUs are doing more TFLOPS per unit then PS3s....

That actually makes me think the 360 could do just as well, if not better then PS3...

Something to think about...

by Babyface - 2007-03-26 08:18
» 360 7x24

That ATI stuff is true - they do have support for ATI GPUs in the folding@home project. Still... I wonder if anyone would want to have their 360 up and running while unattended, given it's notoriety for hardware failures (no flaming intended). I certainly wouldn't.

by Kristian - 2007-03-26 08:39
» Writing the power bill off as a charitable donation?

Jesus - this really is a selfish world. You want to save money on your power bill then find some other way - stop thinking you're 'charitable'

by Kristian - 2007-03-26 08:44
» Would be interesting to see if...

You could program the GPU to be able to crunch actually processes instead of graphics...

personally - as a member of the @home project for about a decade if you could turn off the graphics like the pc version so more processing power could be put towards actual work unit processing it would be great - but these days with the gpu seperate there is a minimal hit on the cell (with the exception of processing the mesh data)....

by mr. Common Sense - 2007-03-26 09:08
» Basically

I am a fairly bad loser whe it comes to the xbox because i couldnt afford one. Due to this i bought the next best thing with a loan i got due to me only being 12. I LUV TEH 360!!!1!!!!1!1

I read ps3 news to comment on them as to make me feel good, because i couldnt afford the superior machine.

Ergo, im a loser

» who the ***** is Victor B

Don't post ***** like that you idiot! oh we smell smoke, so we turned it off. My ps3 hasn't been off in months. It sits on a shelf and has NEVER gotten more than warm. If you smelled smoke it was the crack from the other room. What do you have the test ps3 sitting in, a garbage bag full of newspaper shreddings?? That might get hot.

Why the ***** does qj continue to feed to bull***** with these stories. You have no integrity, no journalism skills, just a bunch of idiots sitting around trying to quote other news sites.

A good waste of time.

by Shatterdome - 2007-03-26 10:44
» Kristian...

@home is doing that now, using the pixel shaders of ATI cards to process Work Units, instead of the CPU....

by Kris - 2007-03-26 12:56
» Its a joke

Its a joke i am sure they didn't smell smoke just a statement to add to the effect

by why? - 2007-03-26 13:15
» Wtf?

Does anyone here realize that this is actually something they should expand to all systems? That it is far bigger than just them and their personal system or which system is better than another? Cures for diseases here people, not a new game.

» PS3 is the Shiz

Ok ok, the PS3 is all about Games in HD with more capabilities that come and come and come due to fw updates, $600 dollars or $500 is actually cheap folks for the PS3 due to the fact it has the most powerful microprocessor on earth and an expensive Blu-Ray Player. Most people already have a bluetooth headset so no need to buy the "XBOX 360 Headset" which is *****ty and breaks all the time...and the PS3 revoultion just got started so give it some time before the PS3 will own Microsoft's Amateur Box.

by Seoulfood - 2007-03-26 17:03
» wow

I cant believe people are actually approaching this with negativity. I am disgusted. I dont think normal fanboys even do that.

by think - 2007-03-26 23:09
» think

what if it was strokes to the knob vice tflops, wouldn't you buy the PS3 then?

by Lord Bling - 2007-03-27 02:43
» folding

You know, you can do Folding@Home on your PC too. Just a thought.

by Supergrover - 2007-03-27 05:04
» .

One problem I've been having is that most of the time (like 90%), I can't upload my finished WU due to F@H servers not responding until I quit and restart F@H. In the mean time, the PS3 is just sitting idle trying to upload to a server that's down.

» It's the only word they don't filter!

I bash MCS all the time. I try and post wherever he does :) He's the biggest ASS on these forums. Hey, go read the FAH forums, many people ACTUALLY ARE going to buy the PS3 JUST to do this. People are even going to buy LOTS of them just to do this. Because it's for the good of people. It's more powerful and less expensive than the other choices.

Still no smoke, going on 24/7. ass clowns at qj...

Is Stanfod Uni getting all this extra processing power for free? Did they pay Sony anything at all or is it totally charitable? Just wondering.
