2K explains what's up with BioShock's Xbox 360 'exclusivity' |
Ó
There is much to be said about exclusivity deals, as they have their own brand of politics. BioShock may be a prime example. When it was first announced, we thought it would be released for both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 - then we found out it was a 360 exclusive.Rumors of a PS3 version kept popping up, but hope for this weren't rewarded. Then, just months ago, we finally find out there is a PS3 version coming out after all. So what's the deal here?
According to 2K studio's International PR director, Markus Wilding, the answer is simple: they couldn't talk about other versions once the exclusivity deal was in place. Microsoft had approached them right after the official announcement when no specific platforms had been announced yet, so talks of a PlayStation 3 version were naturally silenced.
This little technicality of contract also explains the PlayStation 3-specific code that popped up on the PC version of the game. So why didn't they announce the PS3 version as soon as the 360 version was out? Wilding explains:
Basically we chose the right time and we had the opportunity after a while, and we said all right, we'll go for it. Obviously we couldn't announce it for a while. Had we announced it at the time we launched the 360 version, basically we'd nullify that deal, so we had to work it so both parties would be pleased.
That's the basic story. There's no big surprise in there. As long as you have an exclusivity, you cannot talk about other platforms.
Wilding further clarifies that development for the PlayStation 3 version didn't start until some time after the Xbox 360 version was shipped. The code found in the PC version indicates, though, that they might have at least planned to release it on the PS3 alongside the 360 version had Microsoft not approached them.

This exclusivity crap has gone beyond making digs at other companies and is now about punishing consumers. Microsoft has become the reigning champ at this with its highly pro-DRM stances (Sony got rid of rootkits while MS embedded worse into Vista), tyrannical activation schemes, and desire to play keep-away with great games that should be available to all consumers who own relevant platforms. This crap needs to stop.
you also have to think about it a little... here's one theory you can add.
do you think that the PS3 is as "easy" to program for as the XBox360? i don't. i think it's a bit more complicated... getting this deal was probably a good idea... you might ask: why?
well, because it's a little harder to program for the PS3... it might need more work to get it to the point where they're satisfied... and to debug when that phase comes... and that, takes money.
so, with the exclusive deal presented to them... it gives them the opportunity to basically, fund production of the PS3 version.
in another year or two, most companies will be more familiar with the PS3, then this theory won't be so valid... just like it took some companies a while to really put out stuff to make the PS2 shine.
And 2K not having the funds? come on now. As for supposed difficulties, well it never kept them from releasing other multiplatform games simultaneously.
I agree.
If you don't like it don't play video games. Its a competition and thats the way it should be. Microsoft has been tearing Sony a new one by grabbing exclusives and has been doing a great job securing the status of the winner in this console war. Sony has not only failed to secure exclusives like this but has also failed on numerous promises to its users
(Killzone 2, In-Game Dash, etc..). The PS3 lost this war badly. Buy a Xbox 360 already and accept it. Don't come on here and whine saying all games should come out on all systems because thats just ridiculous...
yeees, yes...it is strong with this one
i didn't say that they didn't have the funds. but by going the "exclusive" route they avoided what GTAIV went through...
one console delay, delaying BOTH versions.
"the ps3 lost this war badly" no it didnt, the war isnt over. and even if it was it didnt lose badly. MGS4 isnt loosing badly. its loosing damn well.
Right... Keep telling yourself that.. Thats explains why Microsoft had the balls to say it will sell more units than PS3 at E3 and Sony had no response? Thats why Sony exclusives like FFXII are making it to 360, may I remind you of Devil May Cry 4, Which outsold the PS3 version. And also your one good game MGS has had multiple rumors of a 360 version? PS3 lost and they just keep dodging the bullet by saying "Just wait!".. Well times running out Sony and you have yet to prove anything. Don't get made at me PS Fanboys be mad at Sony.
"had the balls to say it will sell more units than PS3 at E3 and Sony had no response?"
You are contradicting yourself . You said it won the war and then stated a quote that an M$ EMPLOYEE posted and he states "Will sell" not "has sold" . Get your story straight . Are you against Sony? This is the Qj.net/ps3 . You are feeling hostile because you lost exclusivity to Bioshock.
" And also your one good game MGS has had multiple rumors of a 360 version?"
read this on how MHS$ is not possible for you XBOT360

Wow. A Sony employee said a it can't be ported.
Seriously, WTF did you expect him to say? " Uhh, yeah it's coming to 360 in summer 2008."
That proves nothing
Gawd I'm sick of people.
Regarding the story, it is evident that MS bought the devs to shut up and pretend like the PS3 ver didn't exist.
That's simple enough to see. MS did it before and will do it again.
Next. Why, may I ask, is every damn article on this site turning into nothing but a bunch of whiny pricks from either side spewing vomit from their mouths in a weak attempt to save the image of their chosen console? Why is it that every article where something good happens to the PS3, you have members pop in to say stuff like "Sony SUCKS" and "PS3 IS DEAD!!!" with retaliation from the other side spewing "Microsoft sucks" and "360 is a f'n brick!"
WHY THE F _C _U -K can't you play your chosen system and forget the petty arguing and go F--C__U--k something. You'll be happier, get more exercise and save yourself an aneurysm.
I hate to sound like a broken record, but there are scenes in the game such as the scene where Otacon talks about switching disks and the fight with Mantis that would just make an awkward moment for the 360. Though I'm sure that most gamers had a PS1 before splitting up into the PS3/360 factions. Plus during installation there's a specific message that says, "For exclusive use on the PS3".
DREAMCASTS ARE THE FUTURE!!!!!
explain to me, because i'm lacking something here, how microsoft 'buying' exclusivity rights to a game (which sony does just as much) is anything to do with DRM?
ironically, your calling out of microsoft for being pro-DRM is utter bollocks. Its the media companies that drive the need for DRM in downloaded movies and music, NOT microsoft. Yes, microsoft provide a DRM solution for movies and music, but they do want to use it, the media companies enforce it. Now, would you like to hazard a guess at which is one of the world's largest media conglomorates out of microsoft and sony? I'll give you a clue. it beings with an S.
It's also the media companies that have driven the requirement for DRM over hdmi in vista, before you pull that one. And as for pc gaming, the likes of securom are nothing to do with microsoft, other than the fact they make the OS on which it runs.
if any crap needs to stop it's the calling for action on the wrong people. If you want to blame anyone for DRM blame the likes of MPAA, RIAA, or even EA for putting securom on to the trial of the demo of spore, ffs.
