200 PS3 units sold in three minutes in Korea

Enjoy your PS3 - Image 1PS3 sales is moving really slow compared to its market competitors, especially during the month that passed. This, however, is no sign at all that Sony's horse is in a critical condition. In Korea, whose market is dominated by online PC-games, 200 PS3 units were unexpectedly sold in three minutes.

Before the scheduled launch this June 16, Sony placed some units up for grabs on a cable TV shopping channel. It was supposed to fuel the hype by showing off the various functions of the console, but hungry fans could not wait more. All the units were sold almost instantly, leaving no space for any more introductions.

Sony Computer Entertainment Korea marketing manager Kang Hee-won said, "It was an amazing pace that nobody had expected. It also meant that there wasn't enough time to show off the PS3's various functions to viewers, since they were sold out before we could explain them."

Even with such warm reception, Microsoft is not backing down. Instead, Microsoft Korea marketing coordinator Lim Dae-hwan actually believes this is a good sign for both companies. He stated, "We have a positive view [on the launching of the PS3]. We welcome it. We have walked alone, but the competition will make us grow together [with Sony]." Looks like there won't be any wars here, but healthy competition, like in the UK.

As if our Korean gaming friends weren't lucky enough with their 80GB PS3s, their 360 Elites will be packed with a QWERTY keyboard. With all the love they're getting, will we see the industry bloom in Korea? After all, it's a country that embraces StarCraft like a national sport, and a place where the best on the online scene come from.

Wow....

A bit confused

Did they all go to the same person? Did it just launch? Was it just a random coincidence that 200 people decided, 'lets go buy a ps3' at the same time? What exactly is the big news?

That's the thing...

It hadn't been launched yet, and these were a batch of special "pre-release" consoles. So it's not even remotley surprising they sold that fast...just like in the first couple weeks of every territories launch the PS3 when super quick, then the sales died down. It is just the extreme sony die-hards that have been waiting for the release that are buying it up...they create a spike of sales in a short amount of time, but then the sales fall down to less then every other console..... Any critical thinker with half a brain knows the PS3 just isn't worth it right now, unless you want a BR player...

i feel koreans are crooks

they try to take advantage of buying these system just to to sell tham for high prices. Don't they have manners to wait before getting the console before bought. Koreans are rude up front than japanese. there is racism in other countries without using racist. they get angry easliy to others without respect.
by - 2007-06-13 19:20:20
yeah true

they like to slap others for no good reason and unaware when it happens. they also yell or screaam with unspeakable approach. i say watch out. japanese hates korea because there are too many koreans living in japan.

Is this really good news?

I'm happy that Korean gamers are interested in the system, but did people forget there is piracy there? The system might have sold but if the games are going to be pirated, how is Sony going to make money? Just a thought.

always going for headlines

Since PS3 demand and sales suck, sony always goes for the x number of sales in x amount of time nonsense. Sony exec #1. "We're launching in Korea, we need headlines! Sony exec #2. "Let's have a huge launch party with lots of registers and hype." Sony exec #1. "Nah, that was disasterous in Australia, only a few idiots like Quixand were in line to get consoles and it was a disaster." Sony exex #2. "Well lets gather up interest on our website and get them at the launch in advance. Sony exec #1. "Good idea, hopefully they will show up and we can get some good sales in a few minutes so we can get our headlines to make it seem like people are interested in the PS3.

Yea right... if theres piracy there then it would be here in america 2. Theres a lot of people trying to do it in America but..they cant. so how do u figure korea can do it?
by - 2007-06-14 09:59:43
Mr. Common

U know i thought u were a normal fanboy but now your starting to act like a geek 2. How long did it take to come up with this? its obvious people want the ps3 if it sold out that quick (With hype or not). And the sell in advanced probably because they want people to have it?... u look to deep into things and pick out somthing to twist into bad talk. Thats exactly what make you a fanboy... Ur only one-sided
by MGSROCKS1 - 2007-06-14 11:27:50
I just said its thought

I'm just looking a head thats all. Americans are trying too but Asia has always done it every system launch. Why do you think Sony and Microsoft are both tackling piracy in Asia? They don't want it to happen to the Next-gen system.

I honestly belive Mr. Common Sense is working for someone.

Think about it. I've read quite a few of his posts over the past couple of months and he's just so mechanical; never even mentions anything else besides the PS3. His comments appear to be posted without recognition of what others are talking about. I've read up about viral marketing and paid forum trolls and it's not as uncommon as one would think. I honestly think he's paid to do this. I mean really, why else would go to every article about the PS3, mindlessly scroll down to the post box, avoid everyone’s comments, and post something stupid that you know nobody will read because of your reputation you've made for yourself? He's beyond fanboy and I feel there's something else behind it.

..

They did the same thing on a Korean shopping channel that deals with bathroom furnishings and accessories when an executive spotted a link between their products and Microsoft's Xbox360. Sales of the console's special tv offer bundle produced sales in excess of 3000 in just 20 minutes. A spokesman for Microsoft stated "Our products sales in Korea have always been somewhat lacklustre because of the perceived reliability issues associated with Xbox hardware. Thanks to our partners and their products here on HTS Channel, we have been able to offer our Korean customers vastly improved reliability " A spokesman for HTS commented; "Our personalised Kenji 'Burning Cocoon/Dragon reborn' Towel set really complements the colour scheme and aesthetics of Microsoft's latest game machine and truly provides a stable gaming environment"

yeah!

ive been thinkin that too, like he spends more time here than most ps3 fans, wots the story with that, theres plenty of xbox sites!I dont go to xbox sites and take the piss.think,if we all went to the main xbox sites and posted hundreds of negative comments maybe we could make a difference, worth thinkin about!!our own form of viral marketing!

Comments about flopping systems, overheating storys(Lies) over the net make no difference to the buyers they are all buying the Wii

I will mention the PS3 in Europe its almost dead and the sales of the 360s are at least keeping consistant but not that high(though it has a huge attach rate of games to it and Xbox live also makes big money for MS), but the Wii is as usual kicking ass even in Europe. In Japan the Wii is just wiping out the PS3 and 360 and in the USA the Wii is winning the 360 is very strong but the PS3 is almost dead there to. There is no argument these are just facts and arguing about your console on this site changes no ones mind about what system they have as they already own their chosen console thats why they are here.

North and South

North and South Korea really luv each other then ?
by - 2007-06-14 14:09:37

by - 2007-06-14 14:12:59
All 3 consoles will sell fast there for a few days

Expect to see the Elite do just as well to though proberly slightly less quick, as the PS3 for once got something out first..
by - 2007-06-14 18:46:04
It will be like Americas launch again!

They will sell a bunch at first then people start to realize hey ive only got 2 games to play that are worth playing and word gets around and they stop selling. And they people who blew 600 dollars on one will wonder maybe i should of bought the 360 and it takes over like it has here. Also for all of you that think o well MGS4 or any other single game will help sells on a large scale. Your wrong. One game can not sustain a gaming console. Locoroco proved that one. If Halo 3 or Gears were the only games out for the 360 and the PS3 had hundreds of games, the ps3 would win but unless many more good games come out for the ps3 it will end up like the Dreamcast.
by - 2007-06-14 19:37:07

The geeks

that find out how are in america 2. What im saying is if theres piracy there than it Will be here 2. If they restrain it here they restrain it over there... i dont think theres 2 much of a problem at least with the PS3
by - 2007-06-14 23:10:28
onesided...mentalboy11

Mgs4, killzone 2, Home (Not a game but will help sales)... Theres not 1 moment since i bought my PS3 that i wanted a 360. I Have 5 games right now that I love playing, not 1. N your right theres not 1 game that will change everything, but list above shows what coming soon that will change a Hell of a lot.
