PS3 Launch

UPDATE 1: We warned you to treat this as rumor till we got official clarification and we just got the next best thing... second hand official clarification... sort of, coming via a rather smug news post by Computer And Videogames. They claim to have contacted the guys at the Official PlayStation Magazine (from whence this rumor  apparently sprung) who denied ever throwing out the 150,000 figure.

So there you have it, we still don't know how many PS3's will be available at the European launch, but as soon as we have word, you'll be the first to know.

If you've got any connections on the inside, now might be a good time to start tapping them. German videogame site Gamefront is reporting that there are to be 150,000 PS3's available for Great Britain at launch. A rough extrapolation would probably put the total number of European PS3's available at launch somewhere in the vicinity of 500,000 units (note this is pure speculation on my part). Either way it's likely going to be a little difficult to pick one up. Got your pre-orders in yet? Still, until we get solid word from Sony, it's best to treat this little tidbit as a rumor.

to put this number in context

Toys R' Us in Sydney Hurstville put "Pre-Order and receive a free game" offer for Wii and PS3. Wii still had 80% of the vouchers left. PS3's was sold out. this is July. Launch is Nov 17th. Launch Price is AUD$1000 (USD$677 without Tax) Only High-end Model seems to be on the order list. and still, it's selling out even on pre-orders. I think this is it guys. Proof that it's not about whether it's a good and innovating console, but that the consumer interest plays a much larger role.

:)

this is great news (im from UK) i always thought that atleast 100 000 would come to UK - i dont see why not sony have the resources and facilities to do so. 4 months, 12 days, 6 hours, 50 mins and 20 secs to go till PS3 launch in UK :)

.....

They better be in on time in Ireland...

lol #1

No this is proof that there are lots of fanboys....the average consumer DOESNT preorder, DOESNT reserve and for the most part, DOESNT give a sh1t when a console is coming out. THey just walk into a store one day and say "o SHIIIt new console, how much is it.....600$$!!! lol go ***** yourself " then they see the wii and go demo metroid and realize that it is nasty and buy the wii for a mere 1/3rd the price of the ps3. Watch the PS3 not even sell all 150,000 (even though they will....itd be funny though)

good number of PS3's

This is an excellent number of ps3's for the uk. Sure 150,000 out of 50 million people may not sound a lot but the average game store onyl sells 70-150 consoles in the first few weeks. That will provide for 2000 shops for a first few weeks. So we have a preety good number of consoles coming in.

right on track

Sony is right on track with their goal of a million ps3s at launch. If theres 500 000 in Europe, that only leaves another 500 000 for the other regions.

sure sold it out for pre...

It is fu#k3d up! It will be impossible to get one now. I will have to wait until may 2007, because of the pre orders. It is not fair. And the worst thing is that in Poland it will cost about 1000$ for 60Gb ver. (PSP cost about 600-700$ on launch). PS3 should be sold in factory, so everyone could get one, know how much are there left and get it in equal price.

does this include ireland aswell

Since the story's been debunkned, it's a moot point. However, the story categorically stated this was an allocation for "Great Britain", and since Ireland is not a part of Great Britain, I figure it didn't include Ireland. Like I said though, it's all moot at his point.

Not that much

If this was true, thats a tiny amount. The Xbox 360 sold 75,000 consoles in 2 days. The PS3 would probably sell out in a week, and you'll probably not see one till at least March. No doubt theres going to be launch problems too, Sony arent known for their stellar first gen hardware, if they can keep faults to about the same as the 360 then they'll have done well.

ps3 at gamestation

i work for gamestation in england, as an assistant manager for a few stores in the north west. as far as i know through going most stores this week, all the pre-orders have been met, with each store receiving about 40 consoles at launch, some more, some less depending on the size of store and size of town. We also EXPECT to receive another shipment of ps3's about 1-2weeks after launch, but were yet to confirm this with sony. Best thing to do is if your still interested in buying a ps3 in or around launch, get to your nearest gamestation store asap and register your interest. If the company does get more than expected in the first week or two, you'll be contacted and asked if you want to buy and collect the console or allow it to be sold publicly

...

I don't see why you people are getting so excited about the PS3 Launch. Just think, by now you could have a Xbox 360 and then a Wii before the PS3, all for the same price, if not less! You'd have a wider selection of games and features to take your fancy! Wii60.com!

post above me

for Smaxor5

People not care of price, care much of quality + brand loyalty. Usually people think that price = quality + brand. Want a hint, check the iPod vs. another MP3 Player. People think: "Hey it's an Apple product, so for sure is good". The same with Sony. Fanboys of all brands are going to buy the console they want, but the rest matters of what really people want more, some multifunction device or some gaming device. Just check sales of Gamecube vs. PS2, Wikipedia will show you..... ; )....

question for Darren

Darren, while many have pre-ordered how many have actually paid (assuming you are taking money?) becuase I can see a lot of kids pre-ordering and then not having the money when it counts or parents getting ready for xmas but not having any idea just how much it will cost and then pissing themselves when asked to pay. I can see a large percentage of those pre-orders not actually being able or willing to pay. On another note I never shop at gamestation. The staff in the Luton branch are some of the most up their own arse, arrogant, rude SOB's i have ever known. Its like having an entire store full of Comic Book guys from the simpsons.

@ bobbyjoe

HAHA ! If you believe most people in Europe are gonna get a PS3 then you must be on drugs of something!

in reply to the deposit situation, we have no option of taking deposits for the 1st batch of ps3's, especially after the way the xbox 360 launched and the shortages we had of them. the stores i have been to (st helens, wigan, bolton, 2 in liverpool, manchester and preston) are all taking 10% deposits, kind of like the way you boom a holiday and the same as with the xbox 360 launch. the price has been well advertised in the store since we announced we were taking deposits (£424.99) and we make it perfectly clear that, unlike the 360 launch, you will be guarenteed a console on launch day. we also make it clear that once the deposit is paid, then that deposit cannot be refunded (again, same as like booking a holiday) so it is upto the customer if they do want a ps3 or not. also, sorry to hear the store in luton isnt up to the way you like it. however, bear in mind were like any other company, were only going to hire people who have a decent amount of knowledge about computer games, as we are a cumputer games company after all. on a personal level, i agree with no.17, the ps3 will be exactly like all other playstations before it. its the name that will sell this console without a doubt. ive worked on the games side of retail since the ps1 launch, when i paid £350 at launch for a ps1 with 2 games, and for back then all i got was a games machine and cd player, and compared to what i get with the ps3 at launch (next gen gaming, internet access, dvd player, cd player and what will be the cheapest blu ray player on the market) its hard to see why the ps3 wont be a success. My job half depends on it being a success, just like the 360 and Wii

PS3 will be sold out!

XBOX fanboys are just haters? you know why? because they can't buy a ps3 now that it cost $600. They might do it for a PS2 but not now. Even though they want to...most of them don't afford it, thats why they keep bashing the PS3 hoping it wont succeed. Thats what i keep telling in the other forum "PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE". Gaming is a a expensive hobby. Never never never based a next gen console just because of the price category. It's your big investment so think before buying, because you don't want to regret it in the end. By the way 9 of my friends are buying a PS3 on US Launch.
