Your Favorite Video Games Get Ported to... The Silver Screen! |
Ó

As sure as we are that the sun will rise in the west east tomorrow morning, we know that it's a fact of life that video game movies have a tendency to suck. Surely, a number of you guys have seen at least one video-game-turned-movie in the past, and quite possibly, a number of you had regretted it. Sometimes, even loyal fans of a video game franchise would turn tail from the game series after watching its film adaptation. Yes. The plight that us gamers go through...
Now, DickMcVengeance saved us some time searching IMDb by compiling a list of video games that are being brought to life on the silver screen. Some of these, you might already have known. But here's the list of movies getting the "big screen" treatment (in alphabetical order):
- Alice (as in American McGee's Alice - stars Sarah Michelle Gellar as Alice)
- Carmen Sandiego
- Castlevania (from the writer/director of AVP, Resident Evil, and Mortal Kombat)
- Clock Tower
- Dead or Alive (comes out October 20 in the US)
- Far Cry
- Fear Effect
- Halo (with Peter Jackson as Executive Producer)
- Hitman (Vin Diesel as Agent 47, pic above)
- Hunter: The Reckoning
- Max Payne
- Mortal Kombat: Devastation
- Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (with Jerry Bruckheimer as Executive Producer)
- Resident Evil: Extinction (starring Ashanti)
- Splinter Cell: The Movie
- Spy Hunter: Nowhere to Run (starring The Rock)
- Tekken (written by the same person who wrote Tomb Raider)

Max Payne would be the only one I would go to see. Possibly Hitman too. Don't see how you can make a movie of substance out of a beat-em-up game (cough DoA) revolving mainly around tits.
holy crap. i almost peed my pant readin this. i didnt know there'd be so many. i can understand the DoA thing. there is a storyline if you've played the game, each character is tied to another in some weird way. wow, carmen sandiego, havent heard that name in a loooong time. well now i know a few movies to look forward to. cant wait till Halo comes out. that'll be one i defenitly go see
I just hope they don't murder Prince of Persia:SoT Castlevania or Splinter Cell with a bad film adaption, otherwise I couldn't care much for those game-->movies.
That's quite a lot, if the movie trailers look good then I'll watch'em, though I hate it when you see an awesome trailer only to go see the movie and realise the that ALL the best bits were in the trailer.
I like the sound of Tekken, I liked the mortal kombat films just because I do martial arts, Street Fighter was rubbish though.
I am getting tired of video game movies being like crap like the Second Resident evil film that was horrible.
Tekken movie for the win. I hear the big guy and the caporera guy from the recent "Protector" movie are supposed to play marduk and eddie. I'd like the guy from the transporter to be bryan...
Movies being made into video games or tv shows for that matter.
Mortal Kombat had a kick ass soundtrack, too.
does anyone else think Condemned would make a great movie (if done well)?
I just want to cry...
So many good games being desacrated...
I though Silent Hill movie was quite good from game to movie
There will be also a movie based on the Area51 game. Paramount Pictures bought the rights.
Perhaps David Duchovny will be in the movie as well.

You missed out Metal Gear solid?
I remember that there was an announcement about MGS movie, During E3.
Why isn't it on this list?
it was a lie
where is Metal gear Hideo anounced that it's going to come to the silver screen at e3 on his pamflet. should have been first on the list.
I didn't know some of these were coming out, but I blocked the memory of the DOA movie from my mind. Curse you, QJ for reminding me.
If any of you haven't seen the trailer for the DOA movie, it is THE WORST rendition of a game I have EVER seen in my life. Like, every character is a white woman except for like two. They were fighting over boys in the trailer and using guns and crap if I remember correctly.
DOA is a POS from an SOB producer. Search YouTube for the trailer if you don't believe me, but don't say I didn't warn you.
God of War would make afor a bad ass movie, But only if done in a big way. I'm talking Lord of the Rings style. Big budget and great directing. Hell the game is already kind of like a movie, it just needs Peter Jackson a lots of money for production.
I was excited about Alice...until I saw who is playing her.....now I just want to break something...a lot of things....I donno if that will cure it...I might have to go on a rampage.
"Are most of you actually whooping with joy to see your favorite characters (Sam Fisher? Jin Kazama? Master Chief?) in a movie, or are you groaning in agony?"
Not at all happy, except like Halo where yo ucan't see the dewd's face, or if it is reely well acted, and ***** liek that. Bad movies of gewd games just suck, and vice versa, especially that way.
Boht MGS and God Of War have been confirmed, but the progress on those projects are unknown, we don't even know if actors or crew were signed. David jaffe said he,d be involved in the film to a certain degree and Kojima will probably keep the final word on it, but he said that he'd stay out of the film.
Doesn't it bother anyone that the DOA movie is based an a game about women with huge tits beating up people, yet in the movie none of the girls have big tits? That would be like casting Ben Affleck as Max Payne, or Vin Diesel as Hitman... oh, wait a minute?
yea wat abt Metal Gear Solid and God of War?
Really excited for prince of persia and castlevani, just hope they get it right.
Let's be honest. The only video game movie that has ever even come close to the hype it generated was Advent Children (and if you haven't seen it yet *slap's reader in the face*). There is a 99% chance that all of these will flop. The only ones of these I will even attempt to watch are Halo and Splinter Cell. Otherwise, don't bring me pain, oh movie producers!!
I think that the person who would fit best to play this movie would be Frank Martin, u know transporter 1 & 2 and crank. I'm serious he would be perfect! I don't really see Vin Diesel being able to pull it off too well.
the god of war and MGS movies? i heard thay were anounced, ima the rock should play kratos
I think that videogame movies should be kept in either anime or CG format. That way people can make an effort to make the characters as in character as possible. They can even hire the same voice actors, you know?
@25 i totally agree
in fact when i first played hitman i was like hey thats the guy from the transporter
lol=]
o ya all these movies are gonna suck especially halo........i mean did anyone ever play the campaign mode?
Please god don't let Peter Jackson direct Halo! He can't direct and is boring as *****. It just won't work. And Hugh Jackman as Snake is Metal Gear Solid anyone?
read the article again, it says hes the producer
Just to make sure you know, Metal Gear Solid should also be on the list. Some of the games you posted are probably some that might get the silver treatment, but nothing is know as of yet.
Halo (with Peter Jackson as Executive Producer)
Hitman (Vin Diesel as Agent 47, pic above)
Max Payne
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (with Jerry Bruckheimer as Executive Producer)
Splinter Cell: The Movie
They better not screw up those movies!
forget those gayass characters, I want a Captain Tomaday movie
why cant asians act as asians in the movies? why does the white women have to go up and screw up their stuff. it disturbs me cuz im sorta racist...
OH MAN!
Making a movie with real-life actors of a game is horrible!
Movies based on games are great, but only if they are computer animated, like FFVII.
Movies like Hitman, Alice and Tekken deserve better then some actors trying their best to capture their essence. These movies mock the game industry and completely destroy the games themselves.
How could anyone like this ?? This is the most horrible thing that could happen to a game, its the same as joking abt it. And we like the animated characters, not stupid celebrities who look nothing like them, and with computer animation at the level it is today, i dont see why making a game into a realistic movie is a good idea.
Personally, im going to try and forget abt this, and save the good memory that i have of it, but i do think that it would be really neat if the same ppl who made a game would make a computer animated movie abt it, like Hitman or Tekken, where the little bit of cutscenes in the games is cool enough, so making an entire movie would be something we would never forget. Its amazing how oposite these 2 ways of making the movie are.
