Jon Erpenbach - Image 1Wisconsin State Senator Jon Erpenbach caused quite a stir in the gaming scene lately with a new legislation he plans to pass. The new law seeks to put a 1 percent surcharge on every game sale to fund a juvenile justice program.

Specifics aren't clear year on how this will work out, but gamers expect that they'll have to carry the additional burden.

This was met with opposition by gamers who are aware about the bill. Gamers are saying that the tax creates an impression that gaming is a bad thing that needs to have additional taxes on it.

"I just think [the video game tax is] pretty unfair to attack gamers and have them pay for something they, more than likely, have nothing to do with," says adult Wisconsin gamer Justin Sallows.

"I think itÂ’s a real problem," he adds. "Even if thatÂ’s not what the intention is, it creates the impression that thereÂ’s something wrong with the video games because we need to put some extra tax on there to try to dissuade people from playing them."

"The [video game tax] idea being that this is kind of a kids-kids thing, in other words, if weÂ’re going to do this for kids maybe this would be a good way to go about it," reacts the legislator. "And if itÂ’s not the best way, IÂ’m open to any other way."

This guy should be fired for stupid ideas like that! They should do something to get the money a different way. Way gaming? Oh I get it, he is stereo typing gaming, thinking only troublesome kids play videogames. Ok so I will stereotype too. That picture makes him look like a boring queer. Maybe he should have to pay a special tax for looking like that, that would go toward dealing with transvestite street hookers.

but it's okay to tax "bad" things like cigarettes, alcohol, bullets, guns, etc whereas games are sacred?

grow up, children - as video gaming becomes more and more pervasive, politicians ARE going to single it out for increased revenue

businesses over the last 50 years have done more with less, why is government the other way around?

So now we're surcharging forms of entertainment?

Video games aren't sacred. Playing cards aren't sacred. Why, in your own terms, single out one and not the other?

I have to pay taxes on games because somebody didn't care about their precious little a-hole kids enough to read the back of the box? What, a game box featuring a man with an assault rifle has violence in it? Really??

I WAS asking why nobody here is outraged that things like cigarettes and alcohol are singled out and taxed MORE by governments whereas other things are not.

Have you ever looked at your cell phone bill and how many taxes are slapped on that (assuming it's not hidden away behind the "various surcharge" labels)?

My point is that things like games whose popularity is ever increasing are going to be seen by your representatives (ironically a Democrat in this case) as a source of revenue for their projects be they necessary or pork-barrel.

Why should I pay my taxes to fund schools I or my children don't attend? Why should I pay taxes to fund YOUR health care?

I'm from Wisconsin and this idea is just ridiculous. No game tax. Why not a movie tax or music tax instead?* Why games in particular?

*Note: I wouldn't favor such a tax, I'm just saying that as an example.
