Westecott: Game industry losing out by ignoring female market

Emma Westecott believes that the gaming industry is ignoring women - Image 1Emma Westecott, a 10-year veteran of the gaming industry, believes that the gaming industry is ignoring the fairer sex. She also said that the gaming industry is missing out on substantial potential revenue by not targeting women.

A major issue that has to be addressed according to Westecott is the fact that the gaming industry is predominantly male.

Research shows that only 18% of people in the computer games industry are women and many of these are going to be in PR. This is incredibly poor. Computer games are perceived as male. Historically programs were made by boys for boys, the stereotype computer geeks. But more women are playing now and there needs to be more diversity.

Her findings are not new, EA has said the same thing before. Female gamers need adequate representation in the games industry for there to be a chance of developing games targeted at women. The lack of female representation has manifested itself through females falling into the categories of pink and fluffy. Like most gamers, women are attracted by games with substance and not just fluff. The majority of gamers right now are women, and the gaming industry is shooting itself in the foot for not recognizing and acting upon this.

She may have a chance to do something about this since the University of Wales will host the annual Women In Games Conference this April 19 to 21. Westecott helped to organise the event with hopes to get a discussion going regarding the role of women in the industry.

» Ignoring Women in USA/Eur. But Japan?

I would have to agree, in U.S.A and in European Countries, it is mainly focused on Male gamers, then that of women gamers.

Nintendo has been changing this view alot with its DS. Nintendogs (a game anyone could pick up and play)..

But closer look into Japan's market, and you will find a mix style of games for both male and female. Like Hello Kitty games, and Date sims( A rather interesting style, much geared to the female in mind.) There is none of these style of games in the U.S/European market, other than the famous Sims based games.

Well i've seen a couple nice girls playing games but they are also gettin to much adicted to this. And when they do they loose their feminity, some even talk like men,

some stop takin baths, makin nails and all that beauty process.Which makes em all even more manly....

Im not saying all are like this, but still, when i see that kinda girl i get a feeling of respect (not attraction)

I think a lot of guys feel the same....

I dont want to have sex with a girl that in mind is a guy.

And that lady on the photo sure looks like one of those.

» Female oriented titles

Kudos to the user above who mentioned the Barbie games. We've had the Barbie and My Little Pony series for 10+ years now. Also, let's not forget that THE SIMS and all 18 thousand of its expansion packs are geared towards the female dollar...

Thing is, most FEMALE gamers want to play the same "cool" games the males do, like HL2 and BF2142, not some hugs and kisses girl stuff.

Wow never in my life have I seen such stupid comments from guys..... Girls dont want that barbie crap, and my little pony BS. You dont have to geaer the ENTIRE game to a girl to get her interested... you just need MORE female characters that arent leaping around in two piece bikinis, having breats the size of water melons, only there to be objectified, that a 2 yo old would notice... Just because a girl likes Halo doesnt make her a butch non feminine girl... i swear by some of your comments, most of you havnt even PLAYEd games with a REAL life female gamer.... thats why i liek matches with the Frag dolls... there are more female gamers out there then you think... but idiots like the rest of you people make them not want to even bother....

If you have something to say, make it positive and a contribution to the industry. Little boys like most of you add to the problems this industry has already in terms of its perception and my colleagues and others in the industry - you know, the adults - are doing our best to talk to government and other bodies to ensure that we have a sustainable industry in this country. If you don't want that then get off the list - NOW!
