UK parliament member wants bigger rating labels on games

Evil games make Keith Vaz sad :( - Image 1Keith Vaz, known for strongly resisting violent video games in the UK, shared his opinions in the House of Commons once again. It's not about banning games this time, but he wants larger rating labels slapped on game boxes.

The British Parliamentarian believes that the current labeling is not enough to warn buyers of the content they'll be receiving. He complains that the labels, which are almost the same size as 10p coins, are too small.

Vaz is also concerned that some retailers themselves have no idea what they're saying. He said:

The content of some games is so serious that a warning should be splashed on the bottom that clearly states the age limit so that those games will not pass the retailers who sometimes sell them because inexperienced people operate cash registers and do not know that they should not sell them to someone who is under 18.

In cases that mature-rated games get into households, Vaz trusts bigger labels to warn people about inappropriate games. As if not content with such request, he also gave a piece about the recently hot controversy of Manhunt 2.

I was delighted when the BBFC decided to ban [Manhunt 2]Â… A huge amount of money is made out of the production of such games, for which we have become the center of Europe, but there is a wider social responsibility, too.

mate, i love my country, im home grown Londoner, but from your comments, can't tell if your pro or con on this topic. all i have to say, is vaz needs to actually play a video game, not to just go on the game website and read the description, go to youtube and view his interviews, the guys a nut job.

can you say "Jack Thompson"

by zetsurin - 2007-07-29 19:13
» What a moron

Why doesn't he just offer free sight tests instead of making bigger labels?

personally i dont care since im not 12 years old. no matter what happens with ratings i dont have to worry because im old enough to drink, smoke, drive, buy a gun, and play a video game that lets me do all three and kill a few virtual people along the way. Sure, put bigger tags on the boxes, its not like i wont be able to buy it.

» hmm

so u think manhunt 2 will be banned in the uk forever huh? dream on my friend, when its out itl cluster ***** the bbfc along with vaz and thompson

by sum1 - 2007-07-29 23:11
» @AoxomamoxoA

you wouldnt be so not worried when people like this start getting all our games banned like manhunt.

Im old enough to escape the age restrictions also but i cant stand this irrational thinking by people who attack something they have no idea about without any evidence its causing the slightest bit of damage.

» lol

the ratings on games are already big enough to see unless your blind, if you make i any bigger all we will see on the gta IV box will be a fat red 18 on it

by Stealth! - 2007-07-30 00:08
» Wow

The lengths people will go to be line Hillary Clinton And Jack Thompson to ban games or make higher ratings. Impressive

I sear so much free of speech nowadays, Also im pretty sure he hasn't plaid a game like JY or HC b4. Hey i know why don't you get a ID scan so no minors gets games, or better yet don't allow kids to get higher rated games without parents.

And how about teaching parents about games and show them how to play them so we don't have to worry about this S.H.I.T and make parents do there job as parents. Cause this isn't going to work.

I don't know why people love blaming games or fast food restaurants for there problems. Take responsibility for your own actions.

» meh

manhunt 1 bored me anyway

by bobs - 2007-07-30 00:15
» the lables are fine as they are....

Whilst i agree that games should be correctly labeled, what Kieth Vaz is suggesting implies that he thinks that average british consumer can't read..... what a prick.

by Ryan - 2007-07-30 02:03
» HA!

HA! Bearing in mind its an offence to sell rated games to underage kids, it's unfair to call all till workers inexperienced. I work at Woolworths (You know, the Blu-ray only folks hehe). We are constantly trained on this subject, reminded that we face imprisonment and a £5000 fine.

When actually scanning a game or film in the till, a massive notice appears asking to confirm that the customer is of the correct age. Try challenging a customer yourself Vaz, let them either stand there and threaten you or just shout at you and call you a stupid w**k*r!

Sigh, if only the government lived in the real world...

by god0fgod - 2007-07-30 02:34
» What?

People don't care about them labels. They won't look at them either way.

by :/ sumguy - 2007-07-30 04:45
» :-@

games would be better if the developers didnt have to worry about what they could put in them though like no children in oblivion or whatever just seems retarded

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-07-30 06:40
» lol

Retarded research shows bigger warning labels reduce violence.

Maybe in reality, it has the same effect as "contains explicit lyrics" on music albums. Kids want it even more, and retailers don't care either way. Politicians in the UK are just as stupid as in the US.

where are the ratings on the movies?

oh that's right,on the back and smaller than either of the ESRB ones.

oh wow, there's 2!!! rating labels on a video game...

and 1 small one on the movie.

oh wait, there's a huge ESRB rating label ont he game disc and a tiny one on the dvd, under the dvd logo...

not very easy to find on the movie...

by Earth - 2007-07-30 08:23
» No no. Rating wont change anything.

I think he is stupid. Some parents are idiots and buy over age 18 rate game and give it to under 18 years old teenagers to play. I have seen that. It won't work that way. Rating license will not change anything at all!

by Barakku - 2007-07-30 08:35
» Sweet

This way parents can tell that games with titles like "Grand Theft Auto," "Killzone" and "Manhunt" aren't intended for 4 year olds...maybe we should have a sound chip that screams "I make your kids kill people" inserted in every GTA box. It wouldn't help, but at least we could waste some tax payer's money.
