Tomonobu Itagaki talks Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword, Ninja Gaiden sequel, and Tekken |
Ó
Tomonobu Itagaki of Team Ninja fame, and admittedly one of the videogame industry's more controversial identities to date, recently sat down in an interview to talk about all things Ninja Gaiden - specifically, about the series coming out on the DS, as well as a possible sequel to the awesome next-gen slash-em-up.
We also get a few juicy hints about the games Team Ninja's hard at work on, as well as his opinion about Tekken (which, by now, should probably be a knee-jerk reaction, wouldn't it?). We give you all the details and more.
In this interview, the mind behind the critically-acclaimed Dead or Alive beat-em-up series revealed a few hints about Code Chronus. While he kept mum about the details, he did confirm that Code Chronus would be a side-game, much like how Dead Or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball was to the original DOA games. He also let slip that it would be more of a "core" game, and that it would be sporting DOA characters in its roster. Nice.
The game talk then segued into Ninja Gaiden - one of this generation's hottest titles, sporting awesome visuals and wickedly-awesome slash-em-up mechanics. He reassured us that the entire development team, including Itagaki himself, is hard at work to deliver and exceed the fans' expectations of how the sequel should be.
This means that, if everything works out well, Ninja Gaiden 2 would definitely be a fantasy-fulfillment game for those of us looking for the ultimate Ninja experience. Sweet!
From the massive next-gen title that should be Ninja Gaiden 2, Itagaki moved on to something smaller (but no less terrible) - Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword for the Nintendo DS. He explained that the game is a wholly original title for the DS, and not a bite-sized port of any game currently out for the handheld.
When asked about what he thought about the PSP and if he was developing anything for it, Itagaki replied that he thought about the PSP as a console more than a handheld, and that no, he wasn't making anything for the system.
Well, that's certainly a wealth of information coming from Itagaki-san himself. Especially the news about Code Chronus - will we be able to control Ayame and Kasumi in ways we could only imagine? Here's hoping so. As for his opinion on Tekken?
Tekken sucks.
Fighting words indeed, Itagaki-san. Updates as we get them.

Tekken sucks??!?! Pure jealousy.
Funny coming from the dev who makes a fighting game with huge boobs as its main draw to complement the button-mashing unoriginal gameplay. I'd understand if this was coming from the VF creator, but DOA has is no where near the level of quality / fun factor of Tekken (or VF, whichever floats your boat). Leave the good fighting games to the big boys, Team Ninja.
Sure, DOA has cleavage and far better women, but. Technically, DOA is TOO easy to master. It's a Newb game compared to the combo-making Tekken.
Graphic wise, they are both great, but I still to tekken for great fun.
Though DOA is good for parties and such where not everyone knows how to play fighting games.
i find ninja gaiden to be boring personally, imo i find devil may cry to be a better series. mainly cos the game has more visual flair and style compared to gaiden. hope i dont draw any comparisons there.. devil may cry is just more fun to me.. the color palettes in gaiden are way to plain to be attractive. and as for tekken sucking... wtf that's bull*****. anybody can be good at DOA... hell girls play it and are often experts. to be an expert at tekken takes more work.. doa feels more like a tic-tac-toe game haha. plus, i dont like characters flying halfway across the screen. doa has spawned a lot of noob ass retards who cant play fighting games. i talked to a friend about tekken, he said he sucks at tekken, so he doesnt play.. but he's good at DOA.. go figure. myself, i like both games, but to say tekken flat out sucks, that's nonsense. maybe that's why he won't make any games for psp, he knows playstation consoles is where tekken made its mark, and he can't compete with that.
btw, has anyone seen this guy? he's one fugly mofo, prolly why he makes large bouncy breasts in his games. i can see him prolly jackin off to his custom kasumi creations.. prolly has nude mods for his games for personal use.. haha what a loser
thats nasty....yeah that dude is ugly....looks like a cracked out rock star.....lol
Jealousy talking there...anyone who's ever played a fighting game knows the truth to be backwards...DOA sucks.
The game's fighting mechanics sucks, it's story sucks and just like Rumble Roses, it's all about eye candy which if you're a pre-pubescent teen you might find facinating...
3D fighting games.
DOA is not a noob game. If you look past the exterior of the big boobs and actually play the game, there's a pretty deep fighting engine. It's not as deep or complicated as Tekken or Virtua Fighter, but it's reversal system takes time to learn because the input commands aren't the same for every character.
I'm a Tekken player and I play at local tourneys. VF's pacing isn't my style, and DoA doesn't have the same caliber as Tekken or VF. Granted, it's better than MK. Still, DoA's not horrible...it's just not as good as the top tier fighting games. If you want to talk about a newbie-friendly fighter, look for any fighters made in America. LMAO
So does this mean that there is a chance that Ninja Gaiden 2 would be coming to the Playstation 3 as well?
i play both but, dude it is a noob game, i know the reversal system, it's like tic-tac-toe - very stupid. it's too noob friendly for my taste, but i still like it.. but c'mon it's a noob game lol.
I'm gonna guess if the PS3 hits around 7mil+ units sold worldwide before a Ninja Gaiden 2 even starts development, then yes. Also, I think it's gonna depend on the success of Sigma a little. I say a little because Team Ninja has to know the game was already remade twice before making it to Ps3, so interest there can't be overwhelming for Sigma. I would like to see it on PS3, myself since my 360 overheated. By the way, if you're reading this and play your games for extended hours or forget to turn your system off.. lol buy those external cooling fan systems. Anyways, I personally wanna see it.. and I think we will.
Itagaki replies:
"Tekken Sucks"
"The PSP is not a handheld, it's a console"
lol, what a tool.
DOA is such a week title and if wasn't for blatant tit shots and a physics system dedicated solely to breast bounce no body would even give it a second look.
I agree with everything you said right there.I think I read somewhere that Ninja Gaiden Sigma had sold 450,000 copies worldwide in its first week. If that number is indeed true then that is a very impressive number and should be able to show Team Ninja that there is a market for Ninja Gaiden 2 on the PS3 as well as on the 360. And I would definetely buy it on launch if it was released on the PS3.
First off Tekken doesn't suck. Its a great fighting game that has been out for ages and still alive. I can't say the same for MK or Street fighter. Just cause you dislike it doesn't mean it sucks. I can't wait for the next Ninja Gaiden for PS3.
he said tekken sucks... hahahaha. this guy really stands up for his company. i cant believe he would say that considering doa is the most shallow fighting game i've ever played.
To me, I think both DOA and Tekken suck. (I'm entitled to my own opinion...hahahah..) Except for Killer Instinct........LONG LIVE KI
