Aura Interactor (not the ForceWear, aright?) - Image 1Remember the old Aura Interactor "virtual reality vest?" It didn't really take off, but the concept was a good one. Showing that you can't really put a good concept down, a company named ForceWear">TNGames is looking to take current rumble technology one step forward with the ForceWear vest.

PSU recently had a sit-down with TNGames CEO Mark Ombrellaro and got some details regarding the ForceWear.

In development for roughly six years now, the ForceWear vest is basically a wearable force generation system equipped with eight pressure areas. According to Ombrellaro, the ForceWear vest actually imparts tactile events and impact within the game to the user. This is done through the vest's eight contact points (four in front, four in back) which can generate up to 10 pound of force each.

The whole thing is also directional, so players who get shot in the back will "actually feel the gunfire in their back while they may not be otherwise aware of this using standard visual display cues." It's not just for FPS and fighting games, too. Ombrellaro says that ForceWear can also be used to impart G-force effects for driving/racing or aerial flight content.

ForceWear is first being introduced on the PC platform. Ombrellaro says that TNGames is currently working on having the technology enabled on all of the various console platforms. The ForceWear's controlling code has also been made available to game developers. This will let them integrate ForceWear support into their videogames and control the functionality of the Forcewear vest.

There are no price details yet, but Ombrellaro says that the ForceWear vest is slated for a November 2007 release.

I had one of these back in the day. Never saw much use tho. I still have the vest but I don't know where the breakout box with the wire connections has disappeared to :(.

Who would honestly buy this? It's fu*king useless, and the reason they give to make it seem worthwhile is a really dumb and unfounded one. I always know which direction I'm being shot from in an FPS, I don't need some stupid vest to tell me. And it really doesn't seem like it would help with immersion or anything, since 1. it seems like it would get annoying after a while and 2. it would only really make sense if you stood up while wearing it (if you can feel the material of the chair you're in or whatever right behind you how would it make sense if you were shot in the back?), and who wants to do that?

It is an interesting idea I'll give them that, but I think they're just wasting time and money on something which is destined to fail.

immersion doesn't necessarily mean that you'll like the experience better. It means you'll be more into the game for better or worse XD. Try playing GTA with that vest on, i bet you'll try to refrain from getting shot so much after 30 minutes of playing, which in turn would make you better at the game... would it not?

I had one of those a long time ago...it never seemed to work (being a 6 year old I probably just didn't know how to use it). It would just constantly rumble and never stop...But if they got at better one actually working with Halo, and the price was right...I'd buy one!

Lol I didn't think of that, the vest will be so annoying it'll make you try harder so you don't get shot

# Nice Idea But...CHUCKINGROCKSATSPACESHIPS 2007-02-25 14:50
Only 4 pressure areas in front and 4 in the back? What about the sides. What would happen if all pressure areas were activated at the same time? I might crush a man for humans sake!!!

Think if you were playing a fighting game or something. How would you explain the bruises. "I got my ass kicked by Nina Williams."

I had the Interactor pack for N64, it didn't pick up in background noise like gunfire etc in games like 1080 snowboardin and Zelda IT PICKED UP ON THE MUSIC.

And not too comfortable having the zelda theme vibrate through you.

I'm guessing this will do the same.

Also this+ Wii= Gym workout!
