With 2008 drawing to a close, it's that time of the year when publications roll out their very own "Top of 2008" lists. Enter Time magazine. Their "Top 10 Video Games of 2008" list is online, and these are the winners:
  • Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3, 360, PC)
  • Braid (XBLA)
  • LittleBigPlanet (PS3)
  • Rock Band 2 (PS3, 360)
  • Gears of War 2 (360)
  • Dead Space (PS3, 360, PC)
  • Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (PS3, PS2, PSP, Xbox 360, Wii, DS, mobile)
  • Hunted Forever (Flash)
  • Fieldrunners (iPhone)
  • Spore (PC, Mac, DS)
Of course, Time isn't primarily a video game publication, and some of you may think that that may throw off some of its credentials in creating a list. And to think, this list was generated by Lev Grossman, the same guy who said, back in 2006, that the PS3 was "not worth the hype."

Nevertheless, it's nice to see a PS3-exclusive (LBP) up there though, as well as a 360-exclusive (GoW2) title too. If you remember, GoW also made it to their 2006 Top 10 list.

Other big titles like MGS4, Fable 2, or Brawl aren't though. And speaking of Brawl, there's not a single Wii-exclusive in the list, despite the domination of Wii titles on the charts for the past few months.

And then there are the handhelds. Or the lack in representation thereof. There aren't any titles for the DS or PSP, unless you count Spore's DS spinoff and the multiplatform Force Unleashed. Which doesn't mean the handheld market is barred from the list. Fieldrunners for the iPhone is in it. Uh-oh, are critics' claims proven true?

Not one Wii game on the list.

Not even best sellers mario and sonic olympics or smash bros.

The truth is out! Wii games suck hard!

Star Wars was on the Wii, but yeah shows the lack of good games on it.

MGS4 deffintiely the best game this year.

by nyr2k2 - 2008-12-08 06:04
» UT3

I thought UT3 kinda sucked. On the consoles at least.

» Well, well, well...

I was just looking over the list and was about to applaud it for its complete lack of Wii games, and the high rankings of GTA IV and LBP. However, when I actually properly looked at this list my satisfaction turned to skepticism; for a start as I looked down the list I was shocked to see no mention to Konami's masterpiece, MGS4. Also noticing a lack of some other great games like Resistance 2, Fable 2, Fallout 3 and FarCry 2, which were replaced by titles on considerably irrelevant formats, despite not mentioning the handhelds (even though neither have dished out an amazing amount this year, they deserve more of a mention than flash games, and I still love the PSP) And to top it off, in the related articals I saw a ridiculous fanboy-ish clame about the PS3 not being 'worth the hype' Anyway yeah, need I say more? And since when did Time know f***-all about video games?

» @eromack718

God of War 2 wasn't made this year!! oooh, it's that again *rolls eyes*

» If GTA4 is in first place I agree with that atleast

I don't like the others much enough to beat them, but I played all the way through GTA4 until I beat it I really enjoyed that one. The shooting system doesnt suck balls and the realistic driving is a nice touch.

» yeah

No Fallout 3 on the list, screw you Time. F3 is still GOY material in my opinion.

» Time, your all messed up in the head.

That list is weak.

Time wouldn't know Jack about gaming anyways.

Glad to see LBP on there though. (wheres MGS4)

and really Starwars.....that game endend up just being clunky crap.

Get your facts straight!

# Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3, 360)

It killed my post. : /

But that line needs PC. As does Dead Space.

by KingPoubar - 2008-12-08 07:15
» No Fallout 3

Because its awful. The only time in gaming history i have actually fallen asleep in the first 40 mins due to serious lack of anything. Fallout 2 kept me up all night when i was tired as hell. And i began FO3 wide awake. Not GOY material at all.

wow all these top ten lists are absolute crap, IGN's top ten is REALLY bad too, they put MGS4 #10 and mirrors edge somewhere higher like #5 or #6

by SupaDawg - 2008-12-08 11:27
» MGS

Sorta surprised not to see MGS4 on that list.

It was far from the best game this year, but still deserves mention before bloody spore. That game fell so short of the hype it was ridiculous.

For me, MGS4 just felt missing as i played it. It was fun, but seemed to fail to deliver anywhere near the experience that the first two did (I didn't play the third).

Still, while I'd argue there were solidly 5 or 6 better games this year, MGS4 should still be on the list.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed? are you f#ing serious?

Given that the Wii has more 90%+ exclusive games on Metacritic than the PS3 I must say - it seems that IMO and all the review sites out there, that Wii games don't appear to "suck hard".

by Jasper1605 - 2008-12-08 12:09
» UT3

Not a good game at all. For the first 3 hours it's sweet but then going through the whole game became ungodly repetitive. GTA IV shouldn't be anywhere near the top 10 either.

by xploren - 2008-12-08 13:36
» Exactly.

Time doesn't know anything about games. No mention of MGS4, a Star Wars game included, and they put f*cking Spore in there. I was so bored playing Spore on PC, and I just gave up.

UT2004 > UT3

I was disappointed with the single player and the lack of a tournament story line. UT2004 remains the best in the series as a single and multiplayer game.

At least the UT3 PS3 has user created content which stops the game from being entirely boring.

MGS4 was great though and Dead Space was one of the more entertaining EA titles of late.

by Isourou-san - 2008-12-09 02:15
» You have to pay to get on the list.

It's obvious enough. "The more you contribute to Time Magazine, the higher the ranking of your game will be."

That's most what likely happened when the list was put together.

by SikWitThiz - 2008-12-09 06:01
» my list is my own personal list

MGS4

LBP

COD5

Gears of War 2

NBA 2k9

GRID

Resistance 2

Silent Hill

» This list is biased..

..where is Monster Hunter Portable 2G? I know it's Jap but come on! Re-read the recent awards and soar in sales of PSP due to MH! Psh! 2 million and rising on Japan alone?!

by Popson - 2008-12-09 09:48
» My list would be...

My GotY: MGS4

Best Sports Game: NHL09

Best Platformer: LBP

Best Shooter: GoW2 (I haven't played R2 or CoD5 yet though)

Best Action Game: MGS4

Best Adventure Game: GTA4

Best Music in Game: MGS4

Best Storyline: MGS4

Of course there is other games that I haven't played that should be on the list somewhere.

I can't believe they didn't include MGS4 though. Morons.
