Hardware sales - Image 1It's been another long, hard week of gaming, and you know that also means it's been a long, hard week of pushing consoles to the game-starved masses across the world. Well, Japan's not the world, but it does happen to be one of the world's foremost centers of tech and gaming.

Below are the results for Japan's weekly console sales. The biggest gainer from the whole thing has been Nintendo's DS Lite, with an impressive 37 percent boost in sales, approximately 55,000 units sold over the week.

Overall, the Wii is topping the home consoles with 12,810 units sold, the PS3 with 4,704 units sold, and the 360 comes in third with 1,319 units sold for the week of February 4 to 11. As for what that means, we'll leave it up to you.
  • DS Lite: 201,177
  • Wii: 78,550
  • PSP: 32,175
  • PS3: 23,431
  • PS2: 16,033
  • Xbox 360: 4,811
  • GBA SP: 980
  • Game Boy Micro: 884
  • Gamecube: 383
  • DS Phat: 121
  • GBA: 36

What? You are probably talking about sales compared to last week sales or something. All of the consoles gained sales except 360 which fell a bit from about 7000 to 4800.

# Not good for PS3 but good for NintendoGuest 2007-02-19 01:00
January 29 - February 4, 2007

DSLite - 146,073

Wii - 65,740

PSP - 31,216

PS3 - 18,727

X360 - 6,130

Feb 5th to 11th

Virtual Fighter released not really done much to shift more PS3s like expected though.

Wii - 78,550

PSP - 32,175

PS3 - 23,431

Xbox 360: 4,811

Xbox has just gone back to its average weekly sales again after Lost Planet/Blue Dragon sold consoles expect the PS3 sales to also drop again next chart now that virtual fighter has been released.

The Wii just seems to be squashing the other Two consoles and must be causing serious damage to the PS3 sales, it seems to have no effect at all on the 360 which sales have remained the same in comparison to before and after the Wii release.

I think this article is wronge, you need to sort it out it doesn't make sense and is misleading!

Basically PS3 has gained sales and 360 has lost sales but is already far behind in Japan anyway, Wii continues to dominate at it's price point...

# List is correctGuest 2007-02-19 03:16
The list above your post is correct I checked it and PS3 sales have only slightly gone up proberly due to the release of Virtual Fighter 5,you can virtually guarantee it to go down in sales in the next couple of weeks after VF5 sales fizzle. The 360 sales has normalized to its usual sort of sales in Japan they have not dropped they went up because the games listed above were released and also Gears of War sold consoles to.

The biggest loser here is looking to be the PS3 as the 360 was never in any other position than it is now, and as it says above -

360 sales have remained the same in comparison to before and after the Wii release.

VF didn't do too much... but it was released on the 8th... and this report closed on the 11th.

That's really only 4 days (or less)

I'd expect PS3 sales to stay relatively elevated for a couple more weeks.

The wii is not a nex gen console. Most people who own a wii will end up owning a PS3 or 360 too. Those that don't woudn't have gotten a PS3/360 in the first place.

350 may not win japan...but the rest of the world? I wouldn't doubt that.

If japan isn't buying the ps3s as expected what makes you think europe and america will/is?

# its not the 350 *****Guest 2007-02-19 06:10
the 360 is popular in Europe but its selling most in America, its the "Homeland" so to say.

You mention Blu Ray first tut tut isnt it a games machine first then?, never mind Blu Ray the thing that could be its downfall especially in Europe is it has NO DUAL SHOCK OR FORCED FEEDBACK its that simple.

A driving game with no shock + No Way

A fighting game with no impact + No Way

ETC ETC

It is an incredible amount cheaper to buy the PS3 in Japan than it is for Europe and they arnt buying in droves so what makes you think Europe will buy it at a more expensive price?.

The PS3 hasnt just got the 360 to worry about it has got the much bigger threat of the Wii which is going to also be available in Europe at the same time.

Sony is in deep trouble...

The future of blu-ray?

Let's take a look at Sony's previous formats: betamax, mini-disc, UMD... they all failed.

You're probably one of those people who thought the PSP would easily outsale the DS when they launched.

And guess what? Sony f*cked up their home-conlose exactly the same way as they did their portable.

Lets see....

PS3 sales go up

360 sales go down

"Overall I think the loser here is PS3"

Now you talk about sonys products gone wrong.. Im not going to be an idiot (fanboy) and say that those products were successful... But those products have nothing to do with the ps3/cell/bluray... Every major company is going to have mistakes, failures and whatnot... If they didn't every company would always make money lol... Now sonys track record is pretty good in my books.. its current products are great, but if you look further back to the end of WWII sony really bolstered Japans economy...

anywho Deep trouble.. come on dont be a fanboy (seems to be alot of ms ones) I like sony but I accept the truth.... Bluray is outselling hd dvd by an alarming rate, almost larger than ps3 is outselling 360... its gonna survive.

Also just play games, who cares about what system is on top so early (or ever) IMO this is a "classic" super nintendo vs sega genesis battle.. And I see both platforms at least lasting 5 years.. sad MS dropped support for the original xbox so early.. ps2 came out and Im still playing these games gow 2 (future soo soon), ff12...

Be happy your fortunate to be able to play a next gen system let alone hd tv and surround sound... I plan on getting a 360 when they drop in price, and if theres any exclusives I may want to play, right now ps3 is good enough for me.. if i was richer, id have both right now (and had more time to play lol)

BTW the Wii is like the gameboy, regardless of if you have a 360 or a ps3, your gonna have a Wii later (id buy it just for wii bowling on wii sports).

Wasn't Sony one the hugest promoters of DVD? From what I recall DVDs did oooooook. Now, I'm not saying Blu Ray is gonna do as well as DVD. Now, this is just my own personal opinion, but MDs and UMDs did not do so hot because they didn't fulfill any particular need. MDs didn't do anything that couldn't be done before, and UMDs are never going to be a hugely adopted media because, damn, it's only for the PSP. Now, I don't know how huge the "HD revolution" is going to be, but I think it will probably have an impact seeing as HD TVs are selling more and more. This will then start a need for HD movie players. For now, Blu ray's doing ok. So in the end, it'll probably do pretty well? I dunno~

I know someone's going to want to say, "I'm not going to pay $600 for a crappy Blu ray player!" Not only do I not care how you spend $600, but the comment I posted is solely about what I PERSONALLY think might happen with Blu ray. It's not about PS3.

the micorsoft xbox 360 will never ever topple sony and nintendo sales on its homeland. most xbox 360's sold in japan are for importers coz its cheaper in japan. and they are a very small numbers. i know the outcome of the next gen wars but i will not tell bcoz you will not believe coz you're a blind xbot.
