System 6 screenUsed in the late 80's, the Macintosh System 6 operating system was made in machine code (as opposed to recent Mac OS, which is programmed in C) and supported only 24 bits of addressable memory rather than full 32 bits, allowing it to address a maximum of 8MB of RAM. Also, this OS had no built-in support for virtual memory.

Features of System 6 may seem not just a bit outdated to today's generation, but a recent article we ran showed charts that revealed how the vintage Macintosh System 6 operating system outperforms a 3GHz Windows 2000 PC. If that article perked you up and you're quite interested on laying your hands on a System 6, unfortunately, it's no longer available - but here's an emulator that will most probably the closest you can ever be to controlling a System 6.

Lazyone has posted photos of his System 6 emulator for the Nintendo DS. Although not a "speedy emulation due to the lack of optimization at this point", Lazyone assures it was faster than he initially thought it would be. Now if only he can soon share this emulator to all of us...

I thought that the old Mac ROMS and OS were mainly written in Pascal

In the old days, we used to always have to pass Pascal strings to the OS when we were working in C or assembler.
