Square Enix considers remakes of Final Fantasy games |

In an interview today, Square Enix Senior Vice President of Software Development, Hiromichi Tanaka, discussed the recently released Final Fantasy III. The game has sold 99% of its shipment in Japan so far, making it a very successful title. And the demand is much higher than the supply. After all this success, Square Enix is definitely looking at the whole remake business in a better light.
This is the first time for this game to come to the US. Alongside the plans for FFV and FFVI, we'll soon have seen remakes of every classic FF game. Where do you go from here?
Tanaka: FFIV, V and VI have been ported to the GBA. As you have seen FFIII is not a port but more of a remake. In the future, since FFIII has been received pretty well so far, we're actually considering remaking some of the other Final Fantasy games.
Seeing as Final Fantasy I, II, IV, V have just been released on the Game Boy Advance, it seems unlikely that these titles will be receiving the treatment first. Maybe a Final Fantasy VII port to the DS? Or maybe the much obsessed-over Final Fantasy VII remake for the PlayStation 3? We just might find out soon enough!

But they are definately going downhill.
I don't know about you guys, but product-whoring is not a good company practice.
Square-Enix went borderline when they released FFVII: Advent Children, FFVII Last order, Crisis Core: FFVII, FFVII: Before Crisis, and FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus.
Now, Before Crisis, hasn't even debuted yet, but hell, even without that, there's a LOT of FFVII whoring going on.
And where whoring is rampant, quality is questioned.
Why do you think people got worried over the announcement about the games in development for "Fabula Nova Crystalis", the 3 announced FFXIII games?
Because when you split your resources, only so much good can out from it. People know that.
I even heard one person comment on this by saying "Square-Enix dug their own graves when they announced sequels to a game that HASN'T EVEN RELEASED YET."
Reply
Something like Xenosaga however were direct sequels to each other. In Xenosaga you're kind of forced to play all of them, and knowing you'll have to dish out a couple more 50 bucks just to complete a game's story isn't really appealing and might get stale.
Thats just my own comparison. Basically, I have no problems with the "whoring" so far because I haven't been let down by their quality of FF games (except I haven't played the DS remakes).

And that's fine. If the variants still meet quality standard to you, then keep buying them.
But personally, I thought Square-Enix lost their touch at FFX.
I didn't like FFX. If you compare FFX to other forms of media, you have to ask yourself, is playing this game more worth my time than doing this or that?
Because in the end, FFX is just a love story. Sure, the battle system is there to introduce a bit of player interactivity, but it's linear and very limited, and pretty much the same as previous FF's to boot.
And when I compare FFX's love story to some of the movies of our age, it doesn't even come close. In fact, the popularity of FFX almost mockingly laughs me in the face as if to tell me that a game doesn't have to have a good story to be successful. It just has to have brand loyalty.
And that's exactly what Square-Enix has. Brand loyalty. Which is fine, if it, as a company, delivers. But like I said earlier, they have already disappointed me.

FF13 is made under such direction, to recreate the battles of the movie with a game.
So it wouldn't be surprising if a remake of FF7 INCLUDED the Advent Children story...
Well, personally, it's a great imagination, but seeing as how they milked it already, My bet is on FF8 or FF6.

Why not post if people prefer motion sensing over rumble. I sure do. 73% is actually a pretty good percentage of people. I am surprise by that. For something you hardly feel after a while it seems highly overrated.
Also this survey was taken over the internet and puts it's authenticity to the ground. Even further MS fans would probably vote just out of spite to make rumble seem more important. How about surveying only people who want a PS3

Final Fantasy 7 announcement on October event confirmed!
The prophet predicted a FF remake would be revealed.
Believe (the prophet is 15/15 btw)

The reason why this guy said maybe ds is because of the crazy buying of ff3. They know for a solid fact that they can make mucho money of that little ds product of Nintendo and yes if FF7 re-make came out for ps3. PS3 will win the console war without even batting an eye that simple.

there was a demand for more FF content, so Square-Enix, being the business that it is, gave in to that demand. they know, ever since that FFVII tech demo for the PS3, that a remake of that title would be their Ace in the Hole. they will stall that for as long as possible (much like Konami stalling putting Alucard back in the starring role in a Castlevania title), because they know that once they give in, it will sell millions of copies (much like the original). it's like holding on to the get out of jail free card in Monopoly: it's guaranteed to save your ass.
say the sales of some of their latest games start to dwindle, maybe FFXIII doesn't do so well (lol. yeah....right), they'll just whip out a FFVII remake. and if that goes well, they'll do 8 and 9 (8 makes me throw up a little in my mouth, but 9 was great. can you imagine the visuals looking like their CG counterparts?)
and yes, Square-Enix is whoring out their FF series, but Nintendo has been whoring out Mario for the past 20 years. it's a working business model, and i don't fault companies for latching on to that business model (as annoying as it is when they do ***** like that) as, in their eyes, it works. don't blame them, blame the gamers that purchase every single Mario and FF title that is released on a regular basis. the demand is there. and gaming companies are supplying that demand. once the demand drys up, they'll move on to something else to try and get attention from us(insert the creation of the Wii: the GC didn't do so well in Nintendo's eyes, the X Box and PS2 were making Nintendo a distant memory for nostalgic fans, so they took a chance, and voila! we have the Wii). until people stop buying the Tony Hawks and Splinter Cells, we'll always have them. that's not a fault of the developers.

#21 I love the idea. Got to spread the wealth of ff7 ds and ps3 would make everyone happy. I don't think 360 fans are really into these 'rpg' things. Although I do have a 360 and I love rpgs... hmmm

I won't say ff7 was the best...but its up there.
I'd buy the ff7 remake(if it was remade)...but i'm questioning buying FF12 and FF13...

12 looks good they made it like a mmorpg without the whole mmo part. Not sure about 13 though personally I feel there one downfall is talking about the products way to soon. I remember when FFX was just about to be released they started talking and they even had a screen for 12 and the US is just now getting it end of Oct.

..damnit! .. A game is not purely made by graphics, the PS3 will be backwards compatible so why not just re-release FF7 for the ps1?! ...
Why cant square release the front mission games in the US/ Europe? we got 4 but thats it! ... theres so much they can do for the fans but theyd rather just whore themselves on cheaply made and produced products... DAMNIT!
PS- Chrono Trigger FTW! ... and Front mission >

I said once before, I personally thought that Square-Enix lost their touch at FFX. I reinstate that. I thought FFX was an overglorified romance story. They say the Square-
Enix is the best in the storyline business. But compare that story to the movie Gladiator. It doesn’t even compare. Videogames have a long, long way to go before they reach mass media, and I’m sorry I set my standards there, but I expect Square-Enix and every other videogame company to perform.

Oh I do. I don’t think anybody should be creaming their pants over ANY piece of entertainment.
I think I have a right to be disappointed in Square-Enix. It’s kind of like peer pressure. If all your friends are smoking, and they want you to join them, and you do, I’m not going blame the people around you, I’m going to be disappointed in YOU, because in the end, YOU made the choice. Sure, I won’t be forgiving to your friends, but I won’t hold up any mercy for you either.

Exactly. Thank you. People KNOW that when you whore out products, quality suffers. Because when companies aim to whore out products, and not create NEW products, people know that the aim is to make a game great enough for the fanatics, but not of a higher caliber, which only occurs when you take risks and make new products.

1 - Graphics, sound, yadda yadda....
2 - To keep the game fresh, throw in 1 or 2 new side-quests (nothing that will affect the main story, of course). Maybe play as Reno and Rude in a few side stories? That'd be killer.
3 - Give players an OPTION of using the FFXII-like battlesystem, OR the traditional turn-based (like i said, pain in the @$$ to program, but well worth it)
4 - Another toughie: Say you have a ton of saved states on your memory card. How's about being able to switch between the PS1 version and PS3 version of FFVII? Like both versions (on one Blu-Ray) can use the same saved states (minus Reno and Rude scenerios). I think it'd be pretty damned fun to 'rehash' and 'revamp' at your savepoints.
Anyways, that's my 2-bits.

FF7 was 3 cds long.... Hypotheticly say that all 3 were not 100% full which they prolly wernt... each disc has roughly 500 meg of data on it now x3 makes it 1.5 gig of data... i will not discount that the ds is capable of having a card that big but square-enix isnt going to waste the money on putting it on the ds when the game with very little modification could be ported to the psp... which has a 1.8 gig umd.
You ds fanboi need to learn the ds is not all that and a bag of potato chips but neither is the psp. There are things each system does well that the other doesnt...

If they make a new Xenogears I hope they'll make all that story telling in the beginning of disc two playable. I heard they ran out of time and funds so just told of what happened after disc 1 instead of making it playable. But yeah XENOGEARS!

Square-Enix has released this compiliation of Final Fantasy VII because FF fans everywhere were clamoring for FFVII related products. they're holding their "Holy Grail" (FFVII Remake) until the other side products stop making them money, if any.
quality *can* suffer when you whore out products, but that's when you have to step back and look at the pedigree of the company doing the whoring.
Nintendo: They have a track record of releasing great products, and even their mediocre offerings are often better than most other's best.
Square-Enix: They are the fathers of the FF series, Chrono Trigger, the Mana Series, Front Mission, etc. they have made, and continue to make, very good games. as all things, there will be sour lemons (insert FF Crystal Chronicles, FF8), but overall, high pedigree.
Square-Enix is running a business. and like any business, they will exploit their consumer base for maximum profit. Nintendo has turned it into an artform (how many different Game Boys do we have to choose from now? should i get the original, or the color, or the pocket color, or maybe the GBA, or the GBA SP, maybe the micro...no, how about the DS, then, but it's too big, so maybe the DS Lite...), and are doing it again with it's Wii (slightly upgraded Gamecube with a new controller). i can't blame them for giving the consumer what they want. if they're foolish enough to buy the same thing over and over and over again then let them. it's their money (with that said, i'd kill for a PSP version of Castlevania: Symphony of the Knight, or a Dragon Quest VIII visual upgrade to Chrono Trigger).
yes, FFX sucks monkey balls. but from all indications FFXII is back on form, and XIII is at the very least looking breathtaking. they may not be on the hot streak they were in the 90's, during the SNES' heyday, but their quality of product isn't entirely crappy, especially lately. they seem to be focussing on getting back to that wonderfully creative time for the years to come.
and after the Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within debacle, they need to try and recoup the cash lost in that endevour. the FF series is their Halo, or Mario, or GTA. it's their flagship series. they can do with it as they wish, and we as consumers, can choose not to purchase what they dish out. i, for example, refuse to buy Dirge of Cerberus (mainly because i played it at E3 and it was craptacular), and the only thing that probably piques my interest is Crisis Core on the PSP, and an FFVII remake for the PS3.
i enjoyed what i played of FFXII, so i'm there. and i'll be following FXIII closely when more info is available. see, consumer choice.

“but the difference in giving in to peer pressure, and making a video game that meets a demand is that your friends aren't giving you millions of dollars to smoke cigarettes, so yes, the blame is solely on you.”
So I’m not allowed to be disappointed in them for not choosing the higher route? No. I’m not going to lower my standards just because they’re a company and have to make money. There is no law of nature that says quality and profit cannot coexist. I’m disappointed in Square-Enix for SELLING OUT instead of moving on to newer and better things. I think I have a right to be.
I’m disappointed because, just ONCE, I’d like to see a company rise in fame and STILL maintain a humble outlook. As it is, most all the companies so far have let their fame get to their heads, and have become egotistical as a result. And Square-Enix is no exception.
