A couple weeks back, we heard Ryan Payton expressing his thoughts that Japan was no longer the center of video game development. As it turns out, he just might be right, if Sony Worldwide Studio big wig Shuhei Yoshida's word hold any water.

Yoshida echoes Payton's thoughts, saying that Japan is starting to lag in its video game technology, especially when compared to the speed in which it's progressing in the US and Europe. Yoshida explains to vg247:

WhatÂ’s happened since the days of PS2; technology becomes more sophisticated, and more and more intense graphics technology [has appeared]. The technology base has shifted from Japan to the US and Europe.

(Sorry, Mr. Yoshida, if I may interject - because I'm a Hydrophobia geek like that - case in point: Blade Interactive's Hydro Engine. And then there's Media Molecule's LittleBigPlanet engine too. Both studios from Europe. Of course, there's also the ever-ubiquitous Unreal Engine 3... Anyways, moving on...)

There are also talented people, engineersÂ… in the US and Europe, and itÂ’s relatively easy to form a large team that required to create this generation of games.

ThatÂ’s not the case in Japan. Because they donÂ’t have a large base, like the movie industry; there arenÂ’t [a lot of people] in the high end of computer graphics. ThatÂ’s making the many great developers in Japan make slow progress.

ItÂ’s amazing that some teams like Kojima-sanÂ’s team and Polyphony Digital are still creating such immense games. But thatÂ’s not [indicative] of the core Japanese software industry, unfortunately.

Will the plague continue, or will they eventually get back to speed? Only time will tell how Japan will surpass this current predicament.

"Japan was no longer the center of video game development."

They don't have to be. They make the consoles and get the royalties!

Although, I have disagree here anyway. Nintendo is Japanese and the Wii is super popular and mostly first party titles.

But the Wii seriously lacks in technology though. It strives for quantity, not quality.

» yeah I agree with you

I also think that some of the best looking titles are from Japan . American and Europe make ok games like gta, halo . Japan though have produced awesome looking titles like MGS4, and FF series always looked good. The Grand tourismo series also very nice like Resident Evil .

@mohaas05 - That depends on what you call quality.

After my third 360 died I ebay'ed the replacement. My PS3 locks up probably once a month. My Wii has given me zero trouble. I'd call that greater quality. The games lack in RESOLUTION but they don't lack in quality. A game is supposed to be fun and entertaining. I've played plenty of Wii games that do just that. So it's nothing but top quality for me.

I'm playing LostWinds right now, I'm having a blast playing it.

» Well...

I agree with Isohaven on a certain point, Wii has better quality as a gaming machine on hardware and software and it has many great games unlike xbots and SCEAlots say. Of course, the Wii is what it is, a gaming machine and nothing else, it's multimedia capabilities are low, and it's not a media driven machine (it's not bad thing, actually it's a good thing because of its cost). Still thats not to say that it has great quality, just has better quality than the even lower quality ps3 and 360 in games. The 3 consoles are all dissappointing to say the least, videogame quality if going down as videogames turn more of a mainstream multi-billion dolla industry. Remember the past when games where actually really good and had amazing quality? Where did all that go?

» alright, look...

Bad games, were always around.

As to Japan not being the center of it all, let's just remember that they don't rely on graphics as much as the US or Europe gamers.

I have a wii, and it's an incredible piece of hardware. It's way different from the gamecube.

The wii version of Force Unleashed is the best version of the game

Uh, no.

Disregarding everything you said - gaming is not going downhill. Maybe for your brands but Nintendo is quite the opposite.

They ballsed up with Mario Sunshine, Double Dash, Windwaker on a commercial level (though I did like Windwaker).

Then next gen, they come at us with Galaxy, MKWii, Twilight Princess and take their best game last gen and actually IMPROVE! Talking of Brawl of course. Unlike Halo which got worse after the incredible first game and MGS4 which still fails to be as good as the groundbreaking MGS1.

Nintendo's only downfall to people on this forum is that they didn't put a powerful enough graphics card in. But on the flipside of that it's also the cheapest to run console since it uses little power (for performance per watt it's the most efficient console... ever) and it provides a simpler development enviornment (like the PS1 and PS2 did).

But people like to talk about 3rd parties. I don't, since I've never cared about games I don't care about. I don't play those games so they don't impact the amazing first party games.

» Nooope!

Sony PS3 rules in graphics.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Media isn't that important yet. It's getting stronger but for the most part people simply do not care about connecting their PC media to their living room. In fact MOST console owners do not even hook up their console to any form of network so that makes media for the most part pointless. But for those that do, it sure is convenient!

This is funny because SO MANY PEOPLE thought the PS3 would belly up because of it's heavy media useage and heavy price. Especially since the Media Extender was a failure for the 360. I believe it had less then 1% usage?

The fact that the Wii is so popular while not having media is a real world example of that.
