Sony says 90 percent of games will be bought online in 2018 |

Ten years from now, the vast majority of gaming software will be purchased via online transactions. This was projected by Sony Computer Entertainment UK boss Ray Maguire as he criticized the Tanya Byron report at the recent ELSPA press conference.“While games are recorded media and we have something on a packet, the recommendations in the Byron Review are okay,” comments Maguire. “But ten years from now the ratio of games sales will have gone from 90 per cent in-store to 90 per cent online."
The Sony boss said that this means retailers are currently responsible for the material that come out of their outlets, but once online game sales take over, the areas of responsibility are blurred. Selling games according to age groups will be a bigger challenge.
"This isn’t merely a games industry issue," he adds. "It’s an issue for every industry with companies that have a website – and when we look at user generated content, it’s a people issue.”
If Maguire's projections come to pass, it will render a good part of the Byron report's recommendations obsolete due to the difference in the nature of online stores and brick-and-mortar retailers. Ratings issued by governing boards could be bypassed if transactions happen in the privacy of households, making it easy for children to access content inappropriate for them.
For her part, author Dr. Tanya Byron explained that her recommendations did not delve into such a scenario because “many key members of the games industry” opted not to talk about the future of online game sales with her as the report was being compiled.

Well in some point Sony already selling game content Online!
Even free downloading but you have to buy something always to keep playing. Also it would be more cheaper, since you buying the game virtually, it always things via internet are cheaper... look eBay, PlayStation store(download able content)
So don't worry, ppl still be buying, downloading, uploading and Posting! n_n'! 4 Fr33 access.
Unless Sony waned to spend lot of time looking for the guilty person...
Well thanks! '

They can't sell 50GB size games online yet because it's impractical. Most people don't have fast internet connections and bandwidth to cope with such downloads and who knows if they will even in 2018. But by then they will work out how to compress and distribute large games online. If services like Steam, Direct2Drive, etc can do it, Sony can do it. They just need to work out all the angles. I'm glad that al least in this aspect they are little more forward thinking.
It's still a long way away, but it's not an impossible future. But I think games will also get bigger and bigger and require more space, so I think optical discs will be an option 10 years from now. DVD and Xbox 360 will be obselete in a few years, the Wii doesn't even have the storage required. PS3 will be the console that races ahead with both physical and digital distribution in its hands.

As for the dude above me: That's really not an issue. I'm guessing you download torrents...correct? I used too also, ya it takes all day. Thats why I just type the game.iso then type megaupload or rapidshare next to it. Those sites are 100x faster than a torrent. And I'm sure sony will offer their games online to download at full speed from their server(after you legally purchased it of course)

I said 10 years 4 or 5 months ago and was politely asked to take a reality check.
Anyway, for me bring it on Sony or MS I like the idea. Use of memory no more hardware with mechanics that can also add to breakdowns and of course if the future should be DLC then we no longer need consoles the size of bricks.
And if we wanna go real geeky maybe we can run the suckers on 12 volt DC so put a solar panel on the window sill as that will keep the greenies happy too.

but it is an idea that will be a good idea and I just hope they make it nearlly impossiple to hack.
so we dont get ripped or get hacked ourselves.
