Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo: The numbers game |
Ó
Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have recently released their financial report for the third quarter of this year, and from what we can see, it begins to shed light on their recent problems, delays and movements with regards to their upcoming consoles - the figures. First up, we have Sony:
- Earnings dropped by 94% for the past quarters, due mostly to their laptop battery problems, leaving them with total earnings of $14.4 million.
- They've experienced a total loss of $369 million due to PS3 startup costs in the past few months.
- Their game revenues are down by 20%, leaving them with total of %1.4 billion in revenues. This was caused by the decreasing sales of PS2 and PSP units, along with the recent PS2 price cut.
- They've sold a total of 5 million PS2's and 3.89 million PSP's in this quarter.
- They currently hold a balance of 4.7 billion, with an additional $3 billion from debts.
- Their Games and Entertainment division had a 70% increase in profits last quarter, boosting it up to $1.03 billion in total profits.
- In connection with this, said division now cuts down its $173 million deficit to just $96 million. Microsoft plans to make this division profitable by June 30 next year.
- Microsoft currently has four million XBLA subscribers around the world, with plans for them to hit the six million mark by June 30.
- They also plan to have 160 games for the XBox 360 by the end of the year.
- They've calculated that per console, there's 2.9 accessories and 5.1 games available.
- They've currently sold 6 million Xbox 360's worldwide (3.5 in North America, 1.7 in Europe, 700k around the world). This falls short of their forecasted 10 million units sold by the time the PS3 launches on November 17.
- They plan to have sold a total of 15-17 million Xbox 360's by June 30, next year.
- They sold 10 million Nintendo DS, and DS Lites in the past six months, totalling 26.8 million units since its initial release in 2004.
- Their new Super Mario Brothers title sold 6.7 million copies worldwide last quarter.
- Nine of their DS titles sold more than one million units worldwide in the last quarter.
- Nintendo expects to sell four million Wii units by January, and a further two million by March 31 worldwide.
- They expect to sell 17 million Wii games by March 31.
- They've had a sales profit of $2.5 billion in this quarter - a 69% increase from last year.
- Their current net income is at $450.6 million.
- They're expecting a total of $6.2 billion for sales and $845 million in profits by March 31.
- They've increased their DS prediction from 17 to 20 million units sold worldwide within this year.
- They've upped their original forecast of 2.5 million sold GBA's to 3.3 million for this year.

Providing the total x360 & DS sales isn't comparable to a quarter's sales for the sony products (which i am frankly astonished at).
I can't believe Sony can still shift so many PS2 units & how few x360 units have been sold - though its lack of Japanese customer support & perceived high price have probably been big barriers
It would be interesting to see how the sales compare after all the major consoles have spent a year in-market.
Sounds like going into nex-gen Nintendo's doing the best! Microsoft doing alright.............and Sony's got all hopes riding on PS3, good luck!
P.S the reason I said Nintendo the best is that have no negative finance at this piont! 360's doing mediocore
ans SOny... well read it yourself.
talking about gaming alone then you have to put sony above micrpsoft because microsoft lost 3 billion on the first xbox and in all likelyhood would do well to just break even on the 360 ( not much developer support again).
sony ofcourse wont be making a profit on the ps3 untill maybe 2009 but if all all goes as it has doen with ps1 and ps2 then they have nothing to woprry about ...( and the blu-0ray v hddvd war may have been deided by then and blu-ray will prob win out imo).
nintendo however have gotten the best of both worlds ... succesful hand held , sucessful wii ( no doubt about this in my mind ) and for the icing on the case they are making a profit on each wii sold . Sony must be very envious right now.
nice to see nintendo is still the video game purist.
i don't understand why sony didn't just delay the ps3 till next year, the obviously can make money off the ps2 still.
milk that cow another year, they have FF XII and God of War 2,why would you overshadow those games?
give the PS2 the last hurrah like it deserves!
first things first, its ok releasing sales figures, patterns etc but people have to stop being so blind with just a quick glance. Nintendo's sales for the DS are impressive, however, the past 6 months has seen the DS Lite released in many regions, so that will acount for alot of the 10million sold. Figures can be very misleading.
I am, however, very impressed that the PS2 continues to sell well, infact being the best selling home console still. Just shows u how big the Playstation brand truly is.
Looking at a snapshot of a company's profits and losses doesn't really mean much. Looking at a TREND of profits and losses, however, is a different story. ;-o
THERE IS A GOD!!!
DOWN WITH THE EVIL SONY CORPERATION!!!
UP WITH NINTENDO!!! ( and microsoft...;P)
I hope this is the beginning of the end for sony!
Long live the Wii
However as it stands Nintendo currently bringing in the hight OVERALL revenue, read and weep!!! sony boy
all these posts (like the one above) are all just middle school kids who read a couple bullet points then posted their childish comments regarding what they want to happen (in horrible grammar and spelling, nonetheless). I personally hope all the systems do well. a healthy gaming economy means that third party success across all platiforms can still thrive, creating competition that, in turn, creates the best product (in this case, most enjoyable games). First party games can only keep a system afloat for so long, case and point...gamecube. I'm not a nintendo/microsoft/sony fanboy. I'm a gaming industry fanboy, and that's what you all should be too.
deuces
styrofoam
its funny how they dont show how many games sony has made this quarter like that of microsoft, or what sony plans are for the rest of the year like that of nintendo and microsoft. why include the battery problem for sony? why not include something game related like how many accessories sony has sold. so far this "financial report" seems very unorganized and doesn't show all the facts.
LMAO
"with total of %1.4 billion in revenues."
sweeeet
1.4 billion percent in revenue o.0
anyways
i think thats suppose to be US Dollars
Sucks to be Sony :S
If you take the liberty of paraphrasing, please know what you are talking about. $1.03 billion in SALES is not the same thing as $1.03 billion in PROFIT. And saying "They've experienced a total loss of $369 million due to PS3 startup costs in the past few months." isn't right either. That's just the games division's operating loss as it says in the article. In fact, I'm not going to read anymore of this and try to pick apart all the problems, as I assume it's just completely inaccurate. (I'm not talking about the original article, but this post here).
yeah, because id really wanna cry over this (end sarcasm) Your missing my point in that a console (thats been around for almost 7 years now) is still selling in high numbers. Wheres the fanboy statement in that? u 12yr old retard!
go back to sucking ur dummy
arrrgh screw u
it doesnt need indepth facts to show that sony is in the red, microsoft seems to be doing ok, and nintnedo is making the money.
For all those wondering why so many units went to the US over Japan, theres your answer.
Of the 6 million 360 units sold (according to the article) 3.5 of them were sold in the US, which figures the most hotly contested territory this gen.
look at it this way.... sony reports loses this quarter due to the whole battery recall. + ps3 coming out mid-november. = buy SNE stock really soon. by the EOQ 3...look for SNE to go up. =$$$$
