Perhaps you've been wary about Project Needlemouse, Sega new 2D Sonic game. If so, this might give you some peace of mind. According to Sega, the game will focus "solely on one blue hedgehog" and no one else.

After a week of counting down and crossing out names from a list of possible playabvle characters, Sega had this to say about Project Needlemous on their official US blog:

To the thousands of you out there asking for a game where Sonic is the only playable character – rejoice. As of today, your wish has been granted. In Project Needlemouse, there will be no new characters – playable or otherwise. The focus will remain solely on one blue hedgehog.

Sega's RubyEclispe, who also posted the announcement, further added the following in the comments section:

Project Needlemouse is being created for the people who have long asked us for a game with only Sonic that harkens back to his 2D roots. We can’t please everyone, but we feel very strongly that there is a massive group of people out there who have been waiting for a moment like this to finally come.

Sadly, Sega still hasn't said anything about target platforms or release windows, but they did release a piece of concept art for the game featuring one of Dr. Robotnik's crabmeat badniks:

Sounds like Sega's serious about catering to 2D Sonic fans this time.

they'll make him wear masks to turn into his friends. or give him wheels on his boots, or maybe they'll give him a pencil and you need to draw the road in front of him.

they still have a million ways to mess it up and i'm not believing it till i see it.

Its a Sonic game not a Sonic & Knuckles or Sonic & Shadow game, i do feel it would be nice if you had an option to have Tails as a side-kick like in Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles.

Let me make this clear....I want it to be good. I have played the games since I was four and want this to succeed.

But this is Sega we are on about. Remember when they said they had to add characters to the games to "give the player value" and supposedly the cause of the PS3 Bayonetta port.

Also, I wouldn't mind Tails in it for multiplayer only reasons (oh wait, that will be DLC I bet).

Having just Sonic is nice, but as an old Sonic fan I'd like at least Tails and Knuckles in. Like tech stated it could be DLC. Ah well, Sonic!

As long as they have the split screen or even online possibly battles like they did in sonic 2 and 3 then this can be a WIN for SEGA

Characters aren't the problem with current Sonic games. Nothings wrong with Tails, Knuckles, or even Amy Rose. Gimmicky bullshit, bugs, and excessive amounts of new characters are the problem with recent Sonic garbage.

:D :D YAY! I never expected this, but Glad to hear SEGA is giving Hedgehog some new classic wings.
I LOVE SONIC Games lolz. Especially from the Old Genesis Console.
I still play them on my Google G1, Wii, PSP, PS3, PS2, and computer lolz.

I have to have them near me, its like sacred games that never get boring.

Project Needlemouse is being created for the people who have long asked us for a game with only Sonic that harkens back to his 2D roots.

Sonic Advance and Sonic RUSH have done a fine job doing just that so I am personally not getting it.

No they haven't. I don't know which games you've been playing. Sonic Advance 1 was a nice logical step from Sonic and Knuckles. 2 and 3 weren't. Sonic Rush on the other hand took things further and removed all fragments of level design and just made long running corridors with the frequent loop. The music was also terrible and the physics of Sonic himself were different to any 2D Sonic game before it.
It sucked, from a classic point of view.

But Needlemouse looks to fix all that. To fix all the crappy characters they flooded into the series, to go back to a better time. Tails would have been allowed but oh well. Can't wait for Needlemouse. Just hope it hits the PSP.

Never found considerable differences on the game physics on the old and new 2D sonic games but you have definitely played them more than I have so you should know better. I just don't get how a game that is all about speed could have good level design (since you are going too fast to look for stuff) apart from some intertwining alternative paths. I thought rush at least was a return to form and that is the opinion of some of the genesis sonic fans too but there are other opinions I guess.

I on the other hand always believed that sonic should be all about speed with only mistakes being the reason for slowing down. Levels designed to take it slow (found on the mega drive games too) just don't quite fit to the overall flow (which is a nitpick compared to the totally broken flow on many of the 3D games) but again that's just me.

Oh it was definitely a slight return to form. And sorry if I came off too abrasive in my post.

Sonic 2 is the perfect example of mixing great, memorable level design with a fast pace. IMO that game hit the nail firmly on the head and since then levels have grown bigger and faster and the feeling is just completely lost.
I hope they take their core design from that - have the potential to go fast but also create intricate and well designed levels.

Finally, a 2d sonic that looks... wonderful. Classic. Just... limiting it to sonic is kinda, bleh. I used to play Sonic The Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles on PC (LOVED it). Playing through with all the different character combos was fun... but alas, they just don't put the same thought into video games as they used to. Still ought to be good :)

I agree 100% with you. Sonic 3 and Knuckles was the all time king of sonic games. Though, it doesn't mean 1 and 2 weren't amazing as well ;)

1 and 2 were great, they started it all, but I just thought the aesthetic and style of S3&K was perfect- all the artwork and music and bosses and everything could not be improved by much at all. There was even some sort of plot or story, but not to the extent that it hindered the gameplay, it enhanced it. When they started making them talk and living with humans etc. I just did lots of  and wished for S3&K days to return.

I've been playing Sonic Unleashed and as much as I hated the Werehog aspect, I enjoyed the running from 2D-3D. Hopefully they'll bring the magic into this.

They should do what Capcom is doing with Megaman and recreate the old style.

2D? they should make it 2.5D, like New Super Mario Bros. That would be awesome. 2D should be replaced with 2.5D. Let 2D die!
