Square Enix - Image 1It's been a while since we've heard of any industry-related job cuts, and for some time back there, it looked like everything was getting back on the right track. With one successful gaming event and conference after the other, and with sales numbers inching and itching to get better, it did look like we're getting out of this slump alive - slowly, but definitely surely. Then we get this.

Square Enix Japan is being rumored to be getting ready to bring down the axe on some 200 to 300 jobs in their company. The Japanese gaming industry has only recently been diagnosed by Keiji Inafune as being over, thanks to the underwhelming booth attendance at the recent TGS. Compared to the previous years, this one's relatively just okay.

Now, we have no confirmation yet regarding this bit of rumor, but if this be true, some like Kotaku posits that it could be merely a corporate reorganization, what with Eidos Interactive being acquired by Square Enix Europe, and Taito (which is also under the Square umbrella) being in some sort of trouble.

But if it really means that the company is in some unpleasant boiling tub of finance woes, then it's just quite hard to imagine, wouldn't you think? After all, they're the company who brought us worldwide delights like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.

Maybe they kick out the people that made these stupid changes to the FF-Series!

I want a classic JRPG ffs... like FF9. that was the best! even 10 was worse...

» Worst Action RPG ever?

that would make me lol so hard.

I remember buying that for GCN and being so excited to play a multiplayer FF game. Only to get home and realize that only 1 player could use a controller, the rest had to go out and buy game boys and the cables to play. If you were actually stupid enough to do that you ended up getting treated with a mediocre game and being out 400$+. That branch should have been publicly executed.

» Delayed layoffs

I wonder if some of it was just a delayed reaction from the recession. Who knows, a lot of things that happen like this aren't necessarily a result of the economy at the moment it actually happens.
