Rumor: RIP THQ? Update

Earlier today, a source close to THQ confirmed to N-Europe that the game studio is actually shutting down. Apparently, the staff has already been informed just today of THQ's "imminent closure."

Now THQ has been in pretty hot water for the past couple of months. Back in November they shut down five of their studios, and just last week, the analysts of Cowen and Company laid the smackdown on THQ, saying that their franchises are going down - specifically WWE Smackdown vs RAW.

According to the insider source, a formal announcement to the press may happen soon, but as of now, it's still uncertain how much of the staff will be let go (and when) and which of its games in the pipeline will get the axe.

*Update* THQ has contacted N-Europe to say that the cake is a lie and they're still alive. N-Europe's source, meanwhile, has reportedly confirmed that the THQ Wireless office in Working, Surrey closed down this morning. THQ Wireless is the publisher's mobile phone gaming arm.

Actually the Smack vs Raw games are not too bad as far as games go. Sure it doesn't have the polish of some other titles, but if you look at it as a raw beat'em up, it's actually not too bad.

I'd certainly give their latest effort on the PSP a solid 6/10.

It's never happy news when dev teams go under, the PSP is already dying a painful death in terms of bugger all titles to play.

Sign of the times I guess...

THQ were getting like EA with there yearly updates, whatever happened to games that took 3-4 Years to make, and turned out to be Classics, no wonder they are going out of business, same old game year after year.

You can argue the same point about EA which defined that marketing strategy - yet they're having no problems at all.

I agree with the gripe, but I doubt it's the reason why the company is going under. In terms of profit, that strategy is a good one - in terms of game quality, it's appealing to the very casual gamer (a large slice of the market) but the hardcore gamer will spit on it for it's lack of polish and substance.

Anyway, I hardly see a mobile gaming portion of a developer getting shut down as an indication that the company is going under.

They are, they make better gta-like games then RockStar. At least they stay original, and dont remove stuff because of weak platform (ahem, 360).
