Rumor: Next-gen Nintendo DS to get graphics boost from nVidia? |
Listed in: Nintendo DS Tags: backwards compatible, Barcelona, Nintendo, nVidia, Sony
It looks like Nintendo is readying the next generation of DS with the help of nVidia. According to reports from Bright Side of News, the company has already started to work on the next iteration of the handheld gaming console that will debut sometime next year.
According to our confidential sources, Nintendo is going to use Tegra System-on-Chip processor for the successor of DS/DSi handheld console. Unlike the current design, nVidia offered a single-chip proposal to Nintendo, a company famous for keeping the hardware platform absolutely simple.
Given the fact that Nintendo DS hardware is based upon 16-bit and 32-bit ARM cores, it looks like Next-Gen DS could be backwards compatible with the DS application library. According to our sources, all of the apps that came for old DS could run on a single ARM11 core, yet alone the next-gen CorTex-A9-based Tegra, leaving graphics subsystem to do "something smarter".
Currently, we have no information what exact chip is being used [just that nVidia won the contract], but with the debut set for February 2010, the second generation of Tegra chips could make an excellent base [to be launched at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona].
If the rumors are true, this could be another big boost for Nintendo.

I'm glad I didn't buy a DSi... -.-
It almost seems too soon for the DS to be replaced.

dont think current cart going to work with new hardware.. sigh

Nintendo has never been about graphics, they've always put their hardware/marketing efforts into controllers and aesthetics.
The DS could get close to the PSP, but if this new iteration surpasses the original PSP's graphic abilities (talking MGS:Peace Walker here) I'll be highly surprised.

The Feb 2010 date is no doubt just a tentative date at which they'll start working with nintendo on the successor to the DS, planning the architecture and so on. A couple years from now you'll see the new handheld out... but by then Sony will of been prepared with the successor to the PSP. So saying "OMG It's gonna pwn the PSP" is a foolish statement.
It's like nitendo discussing the "power" of the wii back when it was first teased... you can't count your eggs till all of the hens have laid.

It specifically says that what is supposed to be released on february is not a new portable console made by nintendo, but a new chip that would supposedly be integrated on the new DS(or w/e you call it).

damm, I really hope the PSP 2 has Xbox 360 graphics or even better, 3G, 4G, Wimax, HD resolution OLED screen, 1gb of ram, 2ghz processor... that would be a dream come true

First of all, this article is RUMOR.
Second, if this article turns out to be true then it wont be until Feb that they start designing the next DS.

better yet for nintendo to even announce such product. and ill also be buying it once R4T works on it (R4Tegra Pirate Flash Card) hehehe.
and ill gladly pay 100 more of the price of this DS to the next PSP iteration with Nvidia Ion in it. should be just like the psp go with real dual analog, more buttons, accelerometer, gps, phone, multitouch and 4 hours or higher battery longevity.

they say its pretty much equivalent to a geforce 7800. an nvidia ION gpu is a geforce 9400 at heart which can theoretically run GTA4 (ive tested this using a pentium Dual core 2.2ghz and 2gb ram)
as the data above implies, it is also possible to make an ION portable device which can run gta4 at slightly lower resolution and lesser detail.
it can be done if they want to.

Nintendo stuff is hit or miss, but if Sony denies something, it is almost as good as confirmation.
