Nintendo's man of kicking ass and taking names, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime, said the white hot Wii is a product of the DS' success. In an interview, he talked about Nintendo's decision to "embark on a radical departure and offer consumers a new way to play" than going head to head with Sony and Microsoft.

Fils-Aime told Globe and Mail:

Our success with Nintendo DS told us we were on to the right strategy. That a simplified input that would allow all types of consumers to get into the gaming would be our best path to the future. That thinking is what led to the Wii remote.

Nintendo's president called the Wii and DS "the real brought-to-market executions" of the company's strategy to encourage immersive gaming and make games "more involving and more accessible for all types of consumers."

Since GoldenEye 007, the Nintendo 64 title which deviated from the formula of simple games to something that required complex controllers for fast-twitch oriented games, the gaming giant's market-leading console and handheld today catered to innovative inputs via Wii Remote and the DS stylus/mic combination.

“We had to make the games more immersive, not from a visual standpoint, but from a game-play standpoint,” Fils-Aime continued. The Wii went on to instigate high demand, and the console is often difficult to find even after Nintendo began producing 1.8 million units a month. The way Fils-Aime puts it, "these are rates and ramp-ups that this industry has never seen before.”

N64 success should lead to a better console than Wii

"The way Fils-Aime puts it, "these are rates and ramp-ups that this industry has never seen before." He needs to stop making excuses. The PS2 sold better than that and never had supply issues after the first 4 months. Nintendo either didn't think the Wii would sell or wanted it to be in short supply to increase demand. They could have easily made more if they wanted to, but even Nintendo didn't think the Wii would sell well. Now that they are selling, they think they're doing everything right and don't need any more effort into making games, useful services, or worthwhile accesories. Check Mii out? WTF is that sh*t? Who cares what kind of Mii people make? The DS is a better product than the Wii anyway. It is reasonably priced and has slightly more to offer than a new control method. Yes they sold over 50 million with no supply problems ever in 3 years but Nintendo can't make 13 million Wiis in one year for some reason. You would have to be a complete Wii-tard to think Nintendo is doing everything they can to make enough Wiis.

will u ever stop NOONE CARES!!!!!!

Ok enough already! Stop saying Wii tard thats sooooo lame!! Did you not read the article about how nintendo Cancelled a commercial for the wii they were going to show?? If they were trying so hard to increase demand they would have done so earlier in the year....why would they do this right at the holidays if they were doing what u say they are they would have been like "Oh wait no we have some wiis here in stock we just forgot about" RIGHT AT Christmas time then people would run to the store and nintendo would have a very profitable holiday!!!!

here's what really led to the Wii

Looks like Nintendo just copied another company's idea for interactive entertainment. XaviX PORT made a very similar game console to the Wii in 2004! Nintendo just copied their controller ideas, jacked up the price, and added it to a mildly modified Gamecube. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XaviXPort_gaming_console
