New Super Mario Bros. hit retail today and after messing around with it for a while decided to give some of my impressions of the new DS game. When you boot up the game you get four different options: a Mario game, Mario Vs. Luigi (Multi), Mini games and Options. Before I talk about the actual game I will talk about the Mini games. Most of the Mini games are the same ones from Super Mario 64 DS but still are pretty fun and a great distraction to take up time and also come in 1 player and Vs. battle modes.

The Heart of the game which is exactly what the title suggests is trying to let people relive their past memories with all the great Super Mario games that have come out over the years while adding a bunch of great new features and such. The backgrounds are mostly in 2D while the character sprites are in 3D. I decided to go all the way through and beat World 1 before writing any impressions about the game and was surprised on more than one occasion.

The world map is like a pop up book hybrid version of SMB3 and SM World which is pretty cool too. Some of the first new things I noticed were on World 1-1 with the additional power-ups the Mega Mushroom and later the Mini Mushroom which have been shown in every preview for the game. The really awesome new addition is the way the environment interacts with Mario though. Level 1-5 pulled out a lot of things I didn't see coming such as bouncing mushroom platforms (which made up most of the level) and a part where a moving mushroom platform helps you get though a secret area in the clouds. In the last boss level of World 1 you end up fighting Bowser SMB 1 style with the switch and everything and although I don't know if that was a fake bowser or anything once I hit the switch Bowser flew into the lava and his skin melted off turning him into a skeleton which was really cool to see.

Overall I'm really impressed with New Super Mario Brothers so far as I thought it wasn't going to do the old school classics justice, but so far it is a lot better than I thought it was going to be. Gameplay and sound is great and really brings Mario back to his old tricks. The only gripe I have with the game is the save system  which is more like the Original Super Mario World then all of the remake GBA versions as you can only save when you complete big events  such as the mid and end level castles and unlocked  mushroom houses. If you picked up the game as well go ahead and give us your thoughts about it as well.

I agree Josh

I totally agree. Wall jump make take some getting use to, but is a great add-on. I am delightfully surprised with how well it mixes the old nostalgia with new game play and graphics. Bravo Nintendo. You always keep good games coming, and keep us pleasantly surprised.

I love this game

I just got it today, after school and have beaten world 1 100% through (and a bit of world 2.) *This means all of the big coins were collected.* Anyways, I think that this game is very good! I wasn't sure at first, but then when I got into it, it almost felt like I was holding an NES controller, instead of a Nintendo DS. I especially loved the mini-games (I tried all of them at least once). This addition will most-likely bring the game plenty more replay-value than if they didn't have the mini-games added on. I give this game an 8/10! Good job Nintendo! (I couldn't believe the price too, it was only $39.99 CAN!) -Well worth my $39.99. :)

my dos cents

This game is awesome. I have seriously not touched my PSP in about six months due to the amount of awesome games that have been coming out for the DS and the lackluster games for PSP. DS is owning PSP right now and its a shame, I always thought PSP would've been the winner. Buy this game if you have a DS. If you are planning on buying a DS make this your first game (or second, if your a metroid fan). This game brings back memories and redefines them. My only gripe with the game is how easy it is to breeze through the levels in the beginning (note how i wrote beginning, it gets harder)

Mini games

It mentions that the mini games are the same as Mario 64 ds. Is this true? Can anyone confirm this? Ill still pick this game up for the single/multi player modes as I love Mario but I was really focusing on the wifi mini games.

Mario 64 Mini's

Yes, a lot of the mini games are exactly the same as Mario 64 ds. But thats just a very small part of the game, so its nothing to worry about. Side note: I love that you can freely go from one world to another just by tapping the world on the bottom screen. This is very handy when you get to a cannon and are curious as to what it does. P.S. It warps you ahead...In my case, three levels. LOL =)

ya know...

i think DS only has a few better games than PSP. I personally think that the DS and PSP don't have ***** on the GB advance.

before even finishing you can techinically save almost anytime...

Just get 5 star coins from 2 stages and you're set. Crack open a star sign and it will save before you progress into the mush house or whatever was behind it.

Amazing

This game is so addictive, it has the best of Mario's 1-3 and Mario World with some influences from Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine. Great, quality game, worth the purchase.
