Gov. Mitt Romney at Regent University - Image 1In the wake of the Virginia Tech shooting incident, it seems that the issue of violent video games will be figuring in the 2008 presidential campaign. Yesterday, the first volleys were fired by Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney during a graduation speech at Regent University in Virginia.

Here's what Gov. Romney said as reported by the Deseret News:

Pornography and violence poison our music and movies and TV and video games. The Virginia Tech shooter, like the Columbine shooters before him, had drunk from this cesspool.

Romney, a Republican presidential hopeful, was at Regent speaking to a conservative Christian audience. So, what do you think folks? Will the issue be brought up again and again during the campaign? Leave a comment below and tell us your thoughts.

It's not surprising. He's going for the ultra conservitive vote and changed his stance on abortion and homosexuality for it. The fact that he's mormon does not make him a "problem" as much as the fact that the american political spectrum has shifted slightly left.

Do not vote for this douche. If he doesn't want violent games and movies in his home, fine. Stay away from my violent media, please. I think I'm old enough to decide for myself, thanks.

Blah, blah, blah, same old drivel, next gamers will be responsible for global warming.

Anyway, Christianity is a religion supporting tollerance is it not?

I can tell it's wasted on him. If he followed a different religion, he'd be called a fundamentalist for his extreme views.

» Like it matters

This joker's incompetence and corruption are so well documented that it almost doesn't matter that no Republican stands even a token chance in 2008; he buries himself. As for the Democrats, they could nominate a three-toed sloth and still win. That's what happens when a combination of excessive conservative voting and outright criminal alteration of vote results ends up placing the worst and most corrupt US president in history in the White House for eight years.

» Wow...

I'm mormon and I take that as highly offensive. Would you say the same thing about baptists or catholics if one of them did this? Why all the hatred towards mormons? Did one of them hurt your or something? It still amazes me at the ammount of persecution we get. And for no reason. Just cause one mormon does this doesnt mean all do.

And I DO agree with Romney but only to a certain extent. Its not the video games that make people do things like the virginia tech shooting. Its INSANE people who have access to guns who do these things. Video games just make them a little more comfortable about doing it. Its certainly not the root of the problem though.

» Eh...

Stop thinking about Mormons like they're Scientologists. Sure, I don't belive what they believe --but the vast majority of people disagree with people on religion. The fact is, Mormons, ignoring the conflicting religious beliefs they hold to me, have the fundamental idea of being a good person. I don't care what or how many gods you pray to, or how you do so, if you base your religion on peace, you're fine by me, and the rest of the civilized world.

Peace out.

If these politicians would have been so persistent to talk about weapons in the past, this whole thing would never have happened.

Regent University? Don't make me laugh. Regent University is a law school founded by fundamentlist/conservative Christian Pat Robertson. It is located next to his TV station and used to be NAMED AFTER THE CHANNEL.

The "violence" and "pornography" are the cesspool and all that was said is that this cesspool has been drank by the media industry such as movies, television, and video games. This cesspool has also been drank by the psychos that performed the tragedy of Columbine and VA Tech, this does NOT regard to the pornographic part of the cesspool, just the part of the cesspool that includes violence.

You mindless left-wing zombies sure like to infest these gaming blogs don't you? Go do your elephant bashing somewhere else, this is a GAME FORUM, not an anti-right forum. These political threads need to have a commentary lock on them. YOU HEAR THAT QJ?! You all (QJ) know these topics always end up in flame wars, haven't you learned yet after all this time? ****COMMENT LOCK****

» Funny Story.

My grandfather worked as an aid to Mitt Romney's father George W. Romney when he was governor of Michigan. Upon arriving at George W. Romney's house one day (to pick up some of his files he forgot) the limo driver went inside and came out yelling at Mr. Romney to get inside. Apparently little Mitt was lighting Mrs. Romney's rose bushes on fire while he was home alone. That's right Mitt Romney was a pyro. It always makes me laugh to hear him make these 'righteous conservative speeches' when I know he lit things on fire as a child.

» Sterotyping gamers is like sterotyping Republicans

Has the FBI released any evidences about the shooter as a massive porn addict, nor which violence games did he played which violence movies he watched? I haven't heard any yet. He probably watched and played the same violence movies and games most Americans and other watched. Nor, do we blame his parents; no, the shooter was a fraction of mental and a nut case out there.

Do we stereotype all far right wing Republicans’ as a witch hunter, Bible Thumper, that doesn’t sin at all? They are just as corrupt as anybody else. No, so Romney is just like the shooter, a segment a mental nut case out there.

Politicians like Romeny is a nobody, just trying to get his name out there for the next Republicans’’ race.

» Extremism is the same either way --Left OR Right

It's a bit humorous when people take stabs at religion, as if no one should be religious and then all would be well. --Just as humorous as when phoney politicians who claim to be religious use a 'hot button' topic as a sound byte for votes. Just because some people want endless licentiousness doesn't mean that they are 'mainstream' or in the middle ground. It means that they are an Extreme (hard-Left) to the opposite of another Extreme (hard-Right). Neither is an entirely desirable outcome. It's annoying that some can't see through the real (mind-bender) game: these phoney politictians pretend to be religious (and flagrantly attend churches full of similar empty show-offs) to get votes they would otherwise not be worthy of (by their previous actions, statements, etc.), then do NOTHING about what they originally beefed about (relax: if Romney actually got elected, you'll still be playing violent or sexist video games). Later, this leaves a bad taste in the mouths of those who elected them, and fuels the hard-Left with a truth that the hard-Right people are hypocrites. However, this does not mean that religion itself is at fault. It means that the indifference of PEOPLE creates the society for more of this ill will. We have built a culture in which lies and hypocrisy are not only the norm, but expected. A culture in which said lies and hypocrisy are 'rewarded' because these politicians are never held accountable. And, whenever religious people, or others of good intent, try to make a case for holding them accountable, they are labelled as religious zealouts or right-wing extremists. So, we come full circle. This is in no way an endorsement of Romney. What I've said may be confusing, but if you think about it, it's exactly what's happening: passions are instigated and stoked, so that we all spend more time fighting each other while bandits in ties and suits walk away with the cash and meaningless speeches. Meanwhile, the Colombines and Virginia Techs continue --maybe not so much because of the violence or sex in the games, but for a lack of morals in the hearts of the people. ... something TRUE adherance to religion can provide.

I'm LDS (mormon) as well and find great offence to Manson's comments. Gov. Romney Wasn't saying that videogames were the issue, he said the violens in videogames is related, in addition to TV, Movies music, etc..

PErsonally I think they can only be a problem if you allow yourself to be some so ingrained with them that they affect your ability to make sound, logical decisions. Once again, it's not the game that causes the violence in real life, it's the insanity of the person that played the game.
