Pass or fail? Video game consoles graded
|
|

With the launch of two of the industry's most-awaited gaming consoles just around the corner, the general excitement that has been building up can be felt almost everywhere. While the rest of us are painfully counting the days, hours, and minutes for those shiny, new machines to finally be available, Robert Workman from GameDaily takes a step back to assess the video game consoles of our time, to see which companies have actually done their homework.
Basing his comments on the console's price, game library, and lifespan, Workman then proceeds to grading the various gaming systems and issues a small prediction for that particular console.
Playstation 2: B+ A solid gaming machine with a fair price, the PS2 has a good library of games, as well as one of the best controllers of its time, no thanks to the Dual Shock 2. Despite being cast in the shadow of its bigger relative, the Playstation3, many good games are still being published for this well-loved console, with titles including the types of Final Fantasy XII (I personally recommend this game, by the way), God of War, and Okami. However, this star may just lose the limelight because of the PS3's superior technology.
Xbox: D Microsoft's first attempt to enter the gaming industry may not have been as successful as they wanted it to be. Though the Xbox has a good library of games, this good factor may have been neutralized by its bulky frame. At this time, Microsoft has also stopped publishing games for this platform, with only the occasional third-party title making a quiet appearance from time to time. It may have been doom for this console the moment the Xbox 360 was released.
GameCube: C Nintendo's neglected cube may have seen better days, but we'll never really know now. Another console which bears a good library of games including Metroid Prime, Animal Crossing, and Eternal Darkness, this console may not be worth purchasing anymore, only for the reason that it no longer has a steady supply of new games to keep it alive and breathing.
DS Lite: A Whatever the GameCube lacked in sales, the DS Lite may have just made up for, as it is now dubbed as the Star of Nintendo (until the Wii comes out, maybe?). A sleek handheld with a touchscreen and wi-fi capability, the DS Lite also had a price which the masses found to be reasonable, thereby making it possible for almost everyone to pick one up for themselves. The fact that there is also a healthy supply of new games for the DS Lite which span vast ranges of interest makes the handheld worth the cash. Workman considers this handheld a must-have, next to the iPod.
PSP: B Featuring a more mature look and selection of games as compared to its Nintendo counterpart, the PSP is expensive, but still gives good value for its price as it still serves as a good device for media storage and music playback. However, the UMD movie market is slowly dying, which may cause a loss for this handheld despite its steady stream of new games. It fights back, though, since it will be attaching itself to its big brother, the PS3, as a means to play PSOne games that can be downloaded via the console, and then transferred to this handheld.
Xbox 360: A To quote from Workman: "The system is considered a success, thanks to a large supply of games, a substantial online community, complete with classic and new game downloads and a well-designed controller." 'Nuff said.
Nintendo Wii: A- Surrounded by good publicity since it was first announced, the Wii has much promise in it. For one, it is more affordable than most consoles (though the US$ 60 extra controller may be a bit of a turn-off in that department). It also has good games come its launch, and has great games on the way; couple this with the Virtual Console, and we have a winner. The Wii is also supposedly more readily available, as compared to its contemporary, the PS3.
Sony Playstation 3: B+ One major issue that this console faces is the matter of availability, with only around 400,000 units at launch. Another factor which may mar its otherwise shiny surface, would be the fact that for its hefty price tag, Sony couldn't even throw in an HDMI cable into the package. However, the PS3 is expected to breathe new life into old titles, and the second wave of games that are scheduled to be released for this console all promise to be awesome.

mastersystem C ........ the console could be called a sucess and it had a few decent games but was nowehere as near as good as the NES
NES A ..............The system that made nintendo reach profits greater than even the toyota car company. this if for many people the first home console . mario mario... mario...duck hunt....thats all i remember about it.
MEGADRIVE/GENESIS B ..........SEGA decided to jump ahead of nintendo in much the same way that microsoft decided to release the 360 earlier than the ps3, it was wholly a tactical decision which paid off . they managed to get a significant portion of the home console market and yet again as always , its those in house games that really made the system great , streets of rage , sonic, golden axe.... however they started attacking nintendo blatantly in thier advertising which made them seem a bit pathetic for such a big company. They abandoned the megadrive early again even though it was still making thme a lot of money to try and stay ahead of the snes with disasterous results.
SNES A ..........what can u say . the other wannabees may bark like dogs but lion isnt bothered by them at all . Nintendo stands firm by its principles. it is not rushed by sega and is not drawn in to any name calling . nintendo remains tight lipped about its competitors. for all that sonic the hedgehog was it still cannot compare to the gameplay and fun that mario offers. sonic is all flash and dash but at the heart of it the game is short and less enjoyable than a mario game which can be relied on in every generation to be the best of its kind. with zelda , mario , final fantasy etc etc nintendo and hundreds of games that followed the snes surpassed sales of the genesis and nintendo kept its crown.
during this time they were approached by sony about making a joint venture system ...snes games avalable on a cd playing device which could also play music ...an entertainm, ent centre !!!... nintendo agreed and the device ? PLAY STATION ........ everythign was going as sony intended untill soemone in nintendo realised that that according to the contract son would have rights over everythign made on the device. nintendo was furious and they broke the deal.

I think the scroe B for Psp and A for DS is somewhat acurate.

PSOne A-...... Well, who here never played on a PSone ??? Great game library (FF7, Gran Turismo, Driver, Resident Evil, and so more). Marketing of this console was the best by far, and it was directly aimed to the 15-30 years old.
N64 C+ .... Except for a few great titles (Golden Eye and Ocarina of Time), the controller would get sluggish with time, the graphics were too basic, and aimed for a younger audience.
But anyway, I think they formed the best generation of consoles yet (in variety on completing each other).
Thats just my 2 cents !!!
Good day all
Reply
saturn..............E I'll give it an E because it failed when it had a head start and a company behind it which had already made a sucessful system. Games companies had invested in the mega cd only to have sega abandon it ....customers had invested in the mega cd only to have sega abandon it.... seems like people began to abandon sega because of it . You really have to question segas ethics. i siuspected they werent a morally strong bunch of folk over there as soon as I saw those snes hate ads . oh well, you reap what you sow. the saturn came ahead of all the cd based systems but failed...i dont know much about the system because i havnt played it.
SONY PLAYSTATION. A+ ........... so there was sony with the Play station , a project now in limbo since thier partner company had pulled out . what did they do? well they realised that the snes was gettign a bit long in the tooth anyway so they stuck with the project ....joined the two words together to form playstation and there it was the games system that ushered in a whole new era like the nes had done before it. sony makes some stellar games and capcom starts making games other than street fighter 2 hyper turbo super christmas warrior editon . resident evil... konami made metal gear solid...sony makes gran turismo....crash... u know .. all those 3d games... and the sytem sells a 100 million ....doubling the amount the snes sold......they came from NOWHERE.... NOWHERE ... and they STOLE the market ...they pull;ed the rug from under nintendos feet ....whats the BIG N GONNA DO NOW???? CHAOS>>> ARRGGGHHHH

GAME CUBE .... D
i dont know much about this system but its not at the top..its not even second but i ehar its got soem great games . still... another humbling for nintendo . ah well....
PS2 A.............from white to black. the beautiful light , white ps1 replaced with a black angular slab that is the ps2. i dont like the colour at all.. but who cares... metal gear 2... metal gear 3.... tenchu... oh wait they screwed that up ...they just cant improve on the original. but the ps2 builds an even greater castle in the sky....the amount of great games this system has is awesome. GOD OF WAR.... Okami.... its still goign strong...it still outsells the xbox 360....its an absolute leviathon...selling 100 million in 5 years where the ps1 had taken 7... a phenomenal sytem and all thisd when another company was watching them with envious eyes.
XBOX C ......... it gets a D. A years advantage or a years disadvantage? that is the question. is it better to release the syetm later to make use of the latet and greatest tech or is it better release it ealry and have first dibs on the user base? well microsoft saw the arena and probably noticed a trend over the past few generations...i.e. he who releases last wins.. but such was not the case. all credit to the company , halo was like a movie. halo 2 sucked a bit though ... the story was crappy. other than the oh so great halo there are few other titles ... if any that can go agasint the likes of god of war or MGS or GT... the system itself only lasted 4 years before it was left to the third parties ( the dogs) . a game system that loses its investors 3 billion.... oh my god... but who cares about that anyway.... what do we get ? well... we get a sytem that look terrible... the graphics are nice but it takes ages to load games... ad there are fewer of those games and of lower quality than you get on another system (ps2) . but hang on... XBOX LIVE... i almost forgot this... ok... im changing it to a C+ just because of this . the system is significant because of this. it has made a lasting mark on the console map.

NES - A - great game lineup. revived the gaming industry
Master System - C - decent game lineup, but couldn't match Nintendo
Genesis - B - Very good gaming lineup, but lacking some true heavy hitters that were exclusive (though Sonic was a great attack at Nintendo)
SNES - A+ - Great game lineup. killer exclusives. state of the art technology for consoles at the time
PS1 - A+ - great library of titles. the SNES of it's time.
N64 - C+ - great Nintendo games, not much of anything else. wonderful potential, but not enough games from 3rd party.
Saturn - C - out of the gate first, but couldn't compete software wise with the PS1, or even the N64. had some sweet titles, but failed in the exclusive 3rd party support.
PS2 - A - Great game library. the most exclusive titles out of it's contemporaries.
X Box - C - mediocre game lineup. great online service. lacked some killer exclusives that weren't shooters.
GC - C - Great lineup of games from Nintendo, not much else. the few killer exclusives ended up ported to other consoles (RE4 and Viewtiful Joe went to the PS2).
360 - ?
PS3 - ?
Wii - ?
DS - A - thanks to it's backward compatibility and solid software lineup (at least, if you enjoy family friendly games and Mario titles)
PSP - B - the PSP is a great system, period. much like the DS is a great system. the difference is that, thanks to the PS2, the PSP is having a difficult time of it. what i mean is that, if the PS2 stopped producing titles, the PSP would pick up the slack, as it's about as close to a portable PS2 as you can get. since the PS2 is still alive and kicking, there isn't much incentive to dive into the PSP. once the PS2 is gone for good, and developers want to cushion their profits while producing the big titles on the PS3, and 360, they'll fall back on the Wii. how anyone can say that 15 million units sold is "the biggest failure ever," is beyond me. so the DS has about 6 or 7 million more sold. SO. WHAT. this is Sony's first foray into the handheld market, and they are holding their own. no one has ever been able to hold their own against Nintendo like Sony has. the Game Gear only sold 8 million units. the Lynx, Wonderswan, and N-Gage barely capped 4 million units.
the PSP has a lot of potential, but it also has a solid lineup of titles out, and coming soon (i'd list them, but i don't feel like it). developers are finally treating the handheld as it's own device, and the quality of the titles have been getting better. for the DS, it really only has one place to go: and that's down. same thing with Sony and the PS3. they can't get any higher, so what else is there? the DS and PSP are also going after vastly different audiences. and fortunately, they're both unique enough to justify purchasing both of them. neither is a waste of cash.
as for the actual news report: it was poorly written, and just outright foolish. the reasons why the consoles were rated that way didn't make any sense.

developers would fall back on the Wii also, but Sony developers, as well as loyal 2nd and 3rd party developers will make games for the PSP as well, due to it's low production costs.
it also wouldn't surprise me that, in the future, a developer would create an original IP on the low cost PSP, then move it to the PS3 after it develops a fanbase, and the numbers of installed PS3's is high enough to make a profit for the title.
i see what Sony wants to do with the PSP, but unfortunately, it may be a year or two ahead of it's time. judging by what they are planning with the PSP/PS3 connectivity, it seems as if it should have come out next year, or 2007, and not 2005.
i updated my PSP to firmware 2.71 recently, and i honestly don't miss homebrew, and have been enjoying the other features and games that the PSP offers.

And to those who think PSP should have higher grade, it's the game line up that is holding it back. The reason why DS is rated so well is due to killer games. I would as soon play PSP games (I love the power of the hardware) but its the lack of anything new and fun. Only recently with Killzone and GTA:VCS have we seen things of better quality than DS games.

"Though the Xbox has a good library of games, this good factor may have been neutralized by its bulky frame"
820 Games is a very large library! Who gives a ***** about the original xbox case, were talking about pass or fail as far as a gameplay you jacka$$. I see Gamedaily forgot to mention xbox live as a strong point. How about the quality of the xbox console vs ps2 ( Maybe that why more ps2 were sold Hint ), my 1.0 still works great.
"At this time, Microsoft has also stopped publishing games for this platform, with only the occasional third-party title making a quiet appearance from time to time. It may have been doom for this console the moment the Xbox 360 was released"
Over a 100 games have been release for the xbox since the xbox360 came out. I wouldn't call that being doomed. Again the stupid reviewer has no clue of how great the orginal xbox is.

PS2 - A+ The best home console of all time.
Xbox - B Has one of the most popular and best shooters (Halo, Halo 2) Great online play (Xbox Live)
GameCube - D Has nothing good to offer except the same ol Mario games
DS Lite - C- Okay I guess but it doesn't really appeal to me at all. I'd give it a lower grade but DS fangirls would attack me. O_O
Super Nintendo - A Definitly one of the best old school consoles. Was lots of fun
Sega Genisis - B Another favorite. Mostly played Sonic on this console; my favorite game on Sega
PSP - B - Not a lot of people agree with this but I do. Great graphics, Internet, Videos, Music, Photos. Plus there are tons of hacks for it great homebrew games to play and many emulators. Everything I need for on the go.

Sony Playstation 3: B+
-HOW THE ***** CAN YOU RATE IT? IT'S NOT EVEN AVAILABLE
-then we can only rate the demand: I'd say right, because right now a lot of stupid M$ fanboys hate this console ( we should kill every fan boys : sony's, nintendo's, and M$'s ). But really the ps3 is looking pretty nice.
anyway: I simply hope the conpetition will remain, it's because of that we can have our great games right now!!
monopole is like killing, it's never good ( like windows..., man vista is not even someting new.. they made what? 2-3 changes? on a list of like 100 promised, it's lame, why? because they have nobody to impress, they have the monople! )

Also you have to be dumb to rate a console that hasnt come out yet....To be fair if youve played demoes I guess you can grade it, but not if your com paring it to systems that have been out for years.
Im assuming QJ noticed how bad it was and showed us this on purpose.

Wii- Virtual Console- Super Metroid Baby!
PS3- Does not need to say anything. It speaks for itself.

I would rate PSP over DS as well, but thats only because I like the games on it over the DS's, and the extra features/screen size. DS is an amazing system, but both systems target a different audience. DS has a few games that I would love to play, but not enough for me to fork over the money. I found 21 psp games to buy (and a bunch more that are coming out), so it was worth laying down the money. I'd own both, but I already spend enough for all of my other games.
I don't mind the $600 dollar price tag for the PS3, or the $400 dollar price tag for the X360. Both seem fair to me...but the problem for me comes from the $60 (possibly more) price tag on games. That's really going to add up quickly :(

I have personally Owned Every single Console to date and most of their games. Thanks to my older brothers hand me downs. And some of my own money of course I will give u detailed breakdowns of my scores unlike u asswhipes who go by the general populations remarks and comments.
NINTENDO - I give this console an A + because of its Gameplay. Which is what makes a game a game. Not its graphics not its controller and definitely not its bulkyness etc. The game play for this console was Evolutionary for its time and I love this console with all of my heart. Punchout baby !!! Double Dribble !!!
Turbo Graphics 16 - I give this console a D for effort and thats all they are getting from me. They overcharged everyone and made a total of what about 2 games for it and then died out. Booooo. The gaming fans want their money back ...
Sega Genesis - This console is one of my favorites because of 5 Games. Sonic the Hedgehog, Street Fighter 2, NBA Jam, Beavis and Butthead and last but not least Madden, Mortal Kombat. =) Definitely a keeper. I give this console a B+. For the simple fact that it could've came out with more games.
Sega Game Gear - I give this console an A. This console was with me thru out my school years and I can remember playing Sonic in class and screaming out loud when I passed a certain level. lol It reminds me of a PSP just less options and a little more bulkier and less graphics but very nice nonetheless.
Super Nintendo - I give this console an A+ Lots of games. Nice graphics for its time. Me and my friends broke countless nights playing Super Nintendo. Enough said.
Game Boy - B for the simple fact its still loved by many people world wide. Still creating games and the Game library for this hand held is amazingly more than any other Portable console to date. Except it came out in color after everyone purchase the black and white version. Go figure.
Nintendo64 - This console gets an A+++++ I don't care what anyone says. I still till this day play my N64. Golden Eye, Quake 2, Turok, WCW Nitro,WWF Wrestlemania 2000. All these games are classics and some currently cannot even be emulated on PC for specific reasons. So this console gets a very very nice rating from me due to the fact its graphics are nice, you can game with 4 people at a time with no lag. As well as the rumble pak which was first evolutionized by nintendo. Nice one guys !
PSone - Gets A+ Paved the way for PS2, but always remember this. There is nothing like the original. The original PSone set so many memories for me. From Crash Bandicoot to Critical Depth to the Final Fantasies ... I love it all.
PS2 - Get an A+ as well very nice graphics. An extensive and if not the most Games ever released for a console. Close run between the PS2 and PSone as far as game releases, but this console takes it in the long run because of one game in particular ..... SOCOM !!!!!
Yes Every single Game from the Socom Genre made me fail most of my classes in HS. Thats a first and last. I try not to take my PS2 out of the closet it will distract me from life in General.
Game Cube - never owned one. Thats tells you everything, but I can say this. There are maybe 6-10 games for this console that blew me away. I give this console a B-
XBOX360 - I give this Console an A+++++++++. If you have an HDTV or a Computer LCD Hook it up to this box. Buy a Game called Oblivion IV Elder Scrolls. The best game ever made PERIOD. Ask around. Any true gamer will tell you this game blows any game out of the water. The Graphics are next Generation. The Specs on this console have Triple Core Processing. The graphics card is Top Notch. The HD on the System is a SATA DRIVE. Need I say more ? This Console is the ***** ! Allowing up to 4 Players and also includes an XBOX Market. Which didn't allow me to give this console a perfect rating. You need to pay 60+ for a year for XBOX Live Market place to download

When looking at the last 40 reviews for each system on IGN, DS has 7 games that passed the 8.0 mark, while PSP has 15.
So if the PSP is a failure with its quickly growing list of AAA titles, what should we say regarding the DS then ? ^^

Before the Dualshock nearly every handheld/console had a max of one 1 analog stick. And many were successful.
And WTF about not good enough graphics? are you daft?
Before the PSP (which really drove nintendo to make a better handheld) for 10 years we had nintendo feed us 2d bull***** handhelds.

you may not agree wid me but ds sux, psp has much more features and homebrew and stuff n64 killed last gen, ps1 jus got boring after a while and had many ***** titles. Dreamcast came and went in like 2 seconds. ps2 was good but xbox was exactly like it yet xbox had much better graphics and games, all ps2 had was ff and gt. gamecube, had good titles but was kept out of the race because the latter were more popular.
BUT NOTHING BEATS THE FIRST FEW CONSOLES
THUS:THE EMULATORS AND BETTER ON THE PSP

Oh, and, now that I've re-read what's posted here, for like the third time, I can't resist commenting on everyone's reluctance to see the PSP as kind of a failure, so far. It's NOT the most fantastic handheld ever created. The launch wasn't very well-received. Initial shipments were plagued with problems--untrue of the DS, on both counts, which is something you'd have to admit even IF you're a PSP fanboy. I'm personally pretty neutral on the DS vs. PSP issue. It's obvious that the DS is performing better, currently, but I still get more bang for the buck I dropped on my PSP, enjoying, thoroughly, the games I can play on my 1.5 via hacks and homebrew, along with many enjoyable emulators and what-not. My DS has been untouched for six months or so, now, because I'm just not really GRABBED by the available games and the somewhat gimmicky use of the stylus. Back to the PSP, though...It's a very powerful handheld that might've been a better value if its father company had maintained a more solid and directed PLAN for it, rather than alienating 3rd party developers with the Swiss Army device approach (remember N-gage? Seems like Sony could've learned something from Nokia's blunder) and trying to push proprietary tech as the NEXT WAVE in entertainment (Face it. UMD movies are NOT slowly dying. They're a pretty definite failure, even though a few units moved, out there, before retailers started abandoning them.). I'm not saying PSP suck(ed/s). It's a good shot for a first forray into the handheld market. They'll milk it for a while longer, likely, learn some things from their mistakes, and probably pull off some improvements, if they decide to go for a hardware revision or a second shot with a NEW handheld system. Since this is a forum that's populated by homebrew enthusiasts, there's no reason why its failure has to be accepted HERE, anyway. We've got something to continue playing around with, no matter WHEN it dies. If you honestly think it's going to last forever, you're just as much in the dark as those poor techno-sages of the late '80's, who prophesized that the NES would be letting us order groceries electronically for decades to come. =) Yeah, laugh it up. I actually READ an article about that, back in the day.

I JUST LOVE THE GRAPHICS ON DS FOR THIS GAME :)
plus most ds games are n64 games
ds has the power of an n64 and psp has the power of a ps2. so u tell me, wat do u like better, an n64 or a ps2
ILL SARCASTICALLY GO WITH THE N64 :)

You also left out a lot of considerations, how about the amazing homebrew on the PSP which stems from the technology packaged in it. Last time I checked I believe DS can hardly run an SNES emulator. I think they are both amazing I have a psp and my girlfriend a DS lite but my point is each argument is only touching one spectrum of the system. Poor way of judging.

This article is from GameDaily... Not QJ.NET
IMHO the PS2 has a better library of games than the Xbox, and I've never really had fun while playing an Xbox.
And I'm not a fanboy, either. I have trouble deciding which company I hate more, Microsoft or Sony. I think it's banking on Sony right now.

Please, this article is a joke...
PS2 - Easily an A for the amount of fun software it has had.
Xbox - B or B-, great third party support, but even more surprising was the amount of great original IP's developed on the system.
PSP - D, The PSP is a new system, it hasnt had time to mature into a real gaming system. Also, you are comparing it to other gaming devices, you have to rate it based on its gaming, which isnt terribly good yet. There are only a handful of must have games. the PS2 has a good 5 years on it, there is no way they can even be close in a grade...
DS - C, great software, great intuitive controls that hasnt been mainstreamed in games before. As time goes on, and the DS gets better games, the rating will ultimately reach an A at this rate.
and thats all I feel like doing..of course thats just my opinion, and I agree with a few other posters here on other things...but dang the main article was really biased or not very well thought through..lol D for xbox, B for PSP, and even rating the Wii and PS3 at all? WTF...

Your either a fuucktard or just plain retarded to think that.

ps2 A- - made great improvements and unleashed a new era for videogames
xbox c - basically just an improved ps2, making it unorginal and its bulky
DS B+ - although it lacks some things, the ds brought on 2 things totally original
Wii A+ - like the ds, it brings out totally original ideas
xbox 360 D- - has barely any new features, all of which you can basically do with a psp, it freezes, crashes, way to bulky, overall pointless
ps3 B+ - has amazing features, offers great compatibality with the psp, cool design, amazing graphics, although high priced, which shouldnt matter anyways
gamecube B - - great for button mashers to learn how to play, small, although small games, not that many games
p.s. - Xbox 360 sucks!!! its a waste of money!!!

I'm pretty sure the article was written based on the majority of the population who buy their games. Not rejects like you.
Other then the lame bragging rights of having over 8000 pirated games to which you'll never get around to playing all of them. What is the point of your comment?

Here is my opinion
Ps1: A+ The reveloutionary console of the 90's
Dreamcast: B It was an amazing console, but lack of games proved to be its downfall
N64: B- Poor in my opinion, but was very popular
Ps2: A+ From 2001-2005 it was the dominant force of the market. It was the first console to play DVD's, Cd's and games, not to mention the masterstroke of backwards compatibility from Sony.
Xbox: B+ Microsoft's first console was pretty poor and was a complete copy of Ps2. Still though, some amazing titles make it a great console.
Gamecube: D+ WTF!!! Nintendo's worst console to date!
Only a very few titles were actually good.
PSP: A- An amazing portable device! Sony were spot on with a lot of things on this portable device, but unfortunatley some key mistakes make it a lot worse.
DS/Lite: B+ Nifty little device with some good features but ultimately as a portable console it can only be second best!
Xbox360: B The first next-gen console to arrive on the market. Has a lot of good qualities, but is ultimately flawed.
Ps3: I'm not in Japan so I don't know if it is good or not!
Wii: Looks like a great console. Can't wait to play it!
