Pachter: E3 is virtually useless for retail and investors |
Ó
With E3 2008 just around the corner, analysts and game media personnel are now earmarking this installment of the annual event as the most crucial in its history. The reason being that E3 may have lost too much of its identity to go on.It used to be that E3 was the venue for big announcements and a showcase of the biggest upcoming games. Since 2007, however, the event has taken on a more businesslike approach and has become more restrictive by not allowing the general public in. This move has proven as the catalyst for some major game publishers to bolt from the group and abandon the yearly gathering.
"The conference used to offer retail, media and investors an early look at games and an opportunity to speak with company managements," comments Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter. "Now the games have long since been announced and the event is virtually useless for retail and for investors."
IGN's president for game content, Tal Blevins agrees. He called E3 of 2008 crucial because "companies will see how much coverage they get out of the show and how much value they are getting out of the conference."
Many believe that the attention of the media and of investors this year will mainly be on the console manufacturers rather than game makers in general. For one, Ladenburg Thalman Gaming and Casino fund portfolio manager Dan Ahrens thinks that a lot of E3 2008's excitement hinges on Sony.
"E3 is significant this year only because Sony are claiming they are going to unveil something big at the conference," he said. "That's important because we know what happens with the PlayStation and Xbox 360 can drive what happens to the independent publishers' games."
Could we be seeing the beginning of the end for E3? It just might be unless we see some big fireworks go off in this year's show. Stay with us for coverage on it.

LordQuas431: Pachter is virtually useless for anyone with a pulse
Wtf is he just one of those stoners that sits in there office listening to Black Sabbath and milking Sony money?
I think so.
I mean milking wedbush morgan money
Maybe this will explain why its virtually useless...
http://pspupdates.qj.net/Pachter-disappointed-at-E3-2007/pg/49/aid/97692
Because he was disappointed about it last year.
ah boohoo
Sorry but I have to agree. E3 isn't as useful as it was when it was opened to the general public - the public went in, tried out a game/console etc., went home told their friends how awesome/crap it was, this spread, etc. This was the effect E3 had. Now it's nothing more than a showroom for upper class and reviewers, and I wouldn't be surprised if these reviewers were easily persuaded to write a better review by companys "assets"
I hope they bring back the old E3, something that everyone can enjoy!
I have never been able to attend the show in person but I have always waited in anticipation for it because I knew there was definately going to be big news coming out about something I cared about. E3 has not done it for me in many years and I go to enough boring trade shows for my job to even bother sifting through the coverage to find something of substance.
Only because of Sony? Oh please, MS has said they have plenty of surprises too and you don't see him mentioning this. His obvious bias makes him a less then credible source and I honestly don't see he keeps being posted..
This man very rarely makes a statement that is with the general consensus or that proves to be somewhat close to an accurate representation.
E3 is not what it was. That is, not what it was to those who had the chance to visit the actual event. Most people, however, don't see the actual event and see what comes out of it. The trailers, hands on impressions, and extra hype for just about every piece of software and hardware on the floor however has changed little from what I can see.
I believe at this rate E3 will be a celebrity invite only. An excuse to give Paris Hilton a free PS3 so they can promote it. "Paris Hilton got a PS3? damn I got to get one!"
Don't believe me. They do it at system launch parties why not E3 too.
Finally got, this guy named Lee. He said... repairs are free... and then he said to my shuggrin... they ran out of boxes to mail them in! So now I got this burnin' ring of fire, and i cant play gear so i smashed it with a hammer, and it burns burns burns, this ring of fire, this ring of fire...
the ONLY thing good for E3 is just consoles.
