Old DS Screens as bright as DS Lite Screens with Hacked Firmware?

Everyone should know by now that one of the benefits of the shiny new DS Lite apart from the more appealing shell design are the much brighter screens with four adjustable brightness levels. A Spanish DS hacker now claims that there have been successful attempts at installing hacked firmware on older DS systems, which subsequently were recognized as DS Lites - complete with the brightness levels. Apparently, this does only function with certain DS versions, although users are trying to get around that.

A video demonstrating the process is also available, but the members at GBAdev (where this was initially posted) remain sceptical. One user is claiming it's in fact not a software issue but a hardware one, since a certain batch of DSes with V5 firmware seem to utilize the same power management chip which is used in the DS Lite.

So, it remains to be seen if this trick can be made available for a broader range of DS versions. So, don't ditch your old DSes just yet. That is, if the brighter screens are, among the many more significant improvements the DS Lite has to offer, the main attraction for you.

We'll keep you posted!

Actually, all you have to do is install the newest version (7) of Flashme. It mimics the DS Lite's brightness settings, lets me turn my old DS (pink Japanese, original firmware ver.4) much brighter than normal. I'm a little concerned it'll be bad for the screen though, since it wasn't designed to go that high. Hasn't seemed to hurt it yet, though.

I tried Flashme V7 on my white V3 DS and it doesn't make any difference.

V7 Flashme does not do as #1 claims, nothing will enhance brightness of the screen on an NDS Phat (software-wise). I'm very skeptical on this as well..

No, it really does. I'm not sure why (doesn't even mention this feature on Flashme site), I wasn't expecting it, but it really, really does. Gives one shade darker than normal, then normal, then two shades brighter. With no way to turn the backlight off anymore (for some reason). Believe what you will. I don't say things just to say them. Why would I make something like this up?

# Didn't work for me, obviously--V3 DS.Guest 2006-04-26 00:12
This is the most exciting news in a while. I only wanted the DS Lite for the brighter screen, really. I read all the related info, and then tried it myself on my White Japanese DS. When I started up Flashme, it told me I had V3 firmware--bummer. I flashed it anyway. Now I don't have to use my Passme, at least...but no delicious backlight for me. :
