Old DS Screens as bright as DS Lite Screens with Hacked Firmware? |
Listed in: Nintendo DS Tags:

Everyone should know by now that one of the benefits of the shiny new DS Lite apart from the more appealing shell design are the much brighter screens with four adjustable brightness levels. A Spanish DS hacker now claims that there have been successful attempts at installing hacked firmware on older DS systems, which subsequently were recognized as DS Lites - complete with the brightness levels. Apparently, this does only function with certain DS versions, although users are trying to get around that.
A video demonstrating the process is also available, but the members at GBAdev (where this was initially posted) remain sceptical. One user is claiming it's in fact not a software issue but a hardware one, since a certain batch of DSes with V5 firmware seem to utilize the same power management chip which is used in the DS Lite.
So, it remains to be seen if this trick can be made available for a broader range of DS versions. So, don't ditch your old DSes just yet. That is, if the brighter screens are, among the many more significant improvements the DS Lite has to offer, the main attraction for you.
We'll keep you posted!
