Of Mangled DS Lites and Cracked Hinges

Ó

I treat my Ice Blue DS Lite like a baby. I even bought a sturdy (not to mention pricey) protective case just to make sure it's sheltered from harm. So, you can just imagine my horror when I saw a photo of a mangled white DS Lite from jacobian.org. According to the owner, his (bad) dog chewed up his one-month old DS Lite. That's quite obvious based on the teeth marks all over the unit.

Despite the battered condition, the unit still turns on, with busted touch screen and all. Well, Nintendo is known to make durable products, so that's not really surprising. What's surprising is that Nintendo only charged the owner $50 for a replacement. Incredible! That's just the same price you'd have to pay to fix the cracked hinge of your DS Lite. Yep, you read that right, the warranty does not cover hinge cracks. Several people at some forums who have reported the problem aren't happy about Nintendo's policy on cracked hinge, and I'm sure there are several more out there who have the same problem but have not come forward.

I think the dog was jealous, cause the guy was giving all of his attention to the DS and not the (stupid) dog.

They should kill the dog!

# Hinge cracks...Guest 2006-07-16 07:55
My hinge was cracked when I got my DS. It's located on the right hinge (where the LEDs are).

It kinda p***es me off but I think I'm going to repair it myself later on.

Trying hard not to be a fanboy here, Nintendo takes care of it's customers a whole lot better that most other companies I can think of. They replace bricked DS's free and ones with 1 dead pixel and I know for a fact there's 1 company that doesn't replace units because of 1 dead pixel

I don't think nintendo will fix 1 dead pixel for free.. I called and they told me not to waste their time. Then again I got some person on the phone who sounded like they hated life :(

# Mine is also crackedGuest 2006-07-16 10:10
I didnt even look at my hinges till I saw this post. And sure enough my ds lite is starting to crack. Its only 29 days old. It seems the cracks form along the ridge on the hinge which is a result of the plasic casting process.

Nintendo should be replacing them for less money or free. Its pretty clear that its a manufactoring defect and not abuse, especailly when some are cracked straight out of the box.

The only problem I had was the cracked hinge, which was like that right after I took it out of the box. I was admiring its beauty and then I saw the defect... =( However, this is the second defect I have seen on a Nintendo product after nearly 18 years of buying their stuff. First was a single dead pixel on my phat DS... which I returned for other reasons... (PSP)

However, my PSP(s) came with dust under the screen and a few dead pixels. I don't care about the dead pixels since it is only noticable when the screen is black but the dust was annoying so I took it apart and cleaned it myself.

# Nintendo charged me the sameGuest 2006-07-16 12:31
I imported a DS.

So sending it back to Japan to get it fixed was outta the case. Nintendo said they would fix it for 50bucks and give me 1 year warranty.

I treated it like a king, never dropped or owt so it is clearly Nintendos fault.

But saying that I am glad it didnt have to send it to Japan or just go buy a new one.

# I noticed it too!Guest 2006-07-16 15:53
OMG! Im gonna be sick! Seeing a DS like that, its awful!

I also noticed what seemed to be a slowly opening seem in the hinge of my DS. I swear it better not come apart, i would die.

What should I do?

# haha yah right #5Guest 2006-07-17 10:08
simple solution if sony wont accept 1 dead pixel. Take the PSP throw it down the stairs than send it in. And the diffrences between nintendo and sonys repairs is

a. sony doesnt charge you to fix it. Nintendo does.

b. sony replaced the whole thing, not just fix whats broken.

Nintendo is not international friendly, I bought a DS Lite but I couldn't register it because my country is not in the countries list. Unlike Sony where I who have the website yourpsp.com and I was able to register my PSP in it and they even sent me the welcome pack by mail !

Nintendo usually makes pretty solid products but the ds lite seems to be a lot more fragile then the original version. also it should be noted that it is dangerous to use your wiiner as a stylus. you could cause both damage to both the ds and your wiiner. it happend to me.. in my case both the ds was damaged and i had to go to the doctor and try to explain how it happened. when i was trying to play nintendogs with my wiiner i got excited and screamed ' take it *****!!" and accidentally peed all over the ds and it shorted out causing the unit to not only electrocute my wiiner but also caused the unit to close like a clamshell on my precious already electrocuted wiiner. it wouldnt haver veen as painful if i had been using battery powere instead of the wall outlet.
