Nokia to Sony and Nintendo: I'm back! |
Listed in: PSP, Nintendo DS Tags: Finland, Sony, UK
Ó
Mobile phone company giant Nokia just put an end to rumors circulating for some time now that they are re-entering the games market. What's the real deal? Nokia is indeed resurrecting the dead! And while their tag line remains "Connecting people," they are hell bent to disconnect Nintendo and Sony from their handheld fan base."ThereÂ’s going to reach a point where we and other handheld platform owners are battling for the same partners and the same consumers," disclosed Nokia UK and Ireland Head of Games Martin OÂ’Driscoll. The official then confirmed that established publishers and developers have already signed up to produce content for their new Nseries phones and S60 software.
If this is the case, it seems that the Finland-based company has learned from its previous mistakes. O'Driscoll continued, "WeÂ’re moving into a new competitive space, where we have a real attractive offering for the games consumer. These are no longer just casual games. They are real games played by real gamers."
Accordingly, Nokia conducted a previous survey about worldwide mobile gaming habits. The study also revealed that the community will play a vital role for mobile gaming's future developments. The new series of mobile phones will be released early next year. And as to how much these phones would cost, O'Driscoll unwittingly commented,
The consumer will have to make a decision: does he wants a standalone gaming device with a limited browsing capability or a phone with an MP3 player, a camera and a bloody good games platform? I think consumers will be prepared to spend £300 (US$ 586) on a phone that offers all those different things rather than £100 to £150 for a stand alone games machine.

I'd rather buy an XBOX 360 or an iPod, seriously. The amount of games you can get on an iPod is probably better then anything Nokia will liscence.

You go to get a new contract, and want a new cell, theyll give you atleast 200-300 bucks on rebates nowadays, you could get a nokia that cost 600 for 300 upfront
now think, nokia might not know gaming, but they know hardware, from a multitasking point of view
they are open source, and a game system by them will be have unlimited online anywhere on the planet (cdma networks, or evdo if sprint), and thats highspeed anywhere too
itll also be a phone, mp3 player, daily planner, camera, and etc
and again, dont forget that nokia made the first trully 3d handheld platform, all they have to do is make it better, they know what they did wrong, and man, theyll whoop sum @ss is they came back
trust me, theyll get the 3rd party support, the markets too big and untaped

Some times keeping it simple works best, too look at this look at the Wii vs the other two giants ok one giant and a computer geek about to get smash. The Wii is totally going for the simple factor and I love this idea. No complex interface, controls, etc. Also last time i heard of Nokia gaming stuff I cryed laughing. Went to EB asked how do I turn on this N-Gage. Random EB employer "Its a N-gage of course it doesnt work". Just thought it was funny...that aside though I remain confident that this is a bad ploy. Sure I love to get Before Crisis but im not geting some stupid phone (if i was able to get it in the first place) for my gaming habbits.

It already has a good market with the WalkMan phone, and it would be so easy for them to get PS1 and maybe even PSP games (as a good groundbase before even having to make specific games for that platform) for a gaming phone... I say watch out...
Actually there have been some rumors about a PSPhone...
Best regards!

A mobile phone should be used to call people, write and send SMS and maybe MMS. Mostly even for an MP3-player a mobile is too big, when I want to listen to music I want something the size of an Ipod shuffle (old version) and not the PSP or even a Nokia N-Gage.
And the price is a joke. The N-Gage didn't sell well, the N-Gage QD didn't sell well, even compared to the N-Gage, so why do Nokia think a new version of that series would sell well? And as Matt wrote, size does matter. Big screens and good fast hardware in case of a game device and the smaller the better with a mobile phone. Also hardware like a fast processor and so on isn't that important for a mobile.

Also if its relatively powerfull and is easily hackable (Aka like the PSP) then it could be a good thing, since game platforms get somewhat subsidized you could get quite a decent emulating machine or basically mini computer for quite cheap
(ala PS3 as a linux server its a STEAL)

Nokia screwed it up with the N-Gage QD, monoaural, no radio. I hope they learn the lesson this time. But NO ONE is going to spend more than 150$ on a machine like that.
I also have a PSP, because N-Gage games look like crap nowadays...

This is £125 cheaper than the PS3 in the UK - Get real, I know which I would choose in a second.
Nokia failed in this area before and they will again, they're was nothing more than a PSX emulator with memory card games, they sucked badly.
I borrowed one off my friend when I drowned my other phone and I could bare to use it, or get it out in public for that matter.

I know the US is running a bit behind with mobile phone tech due the the initial popularity of pagers but I didn't realise it was _that_ far behind.
Any smart phone now a days will give you all you need, wifi, 3 megapixel camera, internet explorer, mp3 players, windows media player, divx players, games, outlook, calendars etc etc
