Nintendo Will Fix Your Cracked DS Lites For Free If...

Ó

crackedA few days ago, I felt a stabbing pain in my chest when I saw a picture of a dog-mangled DS Lite. I can only imagine how the owner felt. Nintendo eased the owner's suffering a bit by charging him only $50 for a replacement. That's the same price DS owners have to pay to have their DS Lite hinge cracks fixed.

Well, that was Nintendo's policy on hinge cracks then. While the company maintains that hinge crack is not a major problem, Nintendo, apparently, is now offering to fix DS Lites for free. This was after Nintendo issued a press release saying that they are not aware of the hinge problems (though they are encouraging DS Lite owners to  contact customer service for any problems). As such, one Kotaku reader called Nintendo's customer service and was told that the repair would be free of charge. There was no confirmation from Nintendo, but the company has prepared a new canned response:

"In the U.S., the reported number of small cosmetic cracks in the plastic hinge of DS Lite systems represents less than 0.02 percent of the total units sold. This cosmetic issue in no way impacts the gameplay or integrity of the DS Lite. Nintendo stands behind the quality of our products and encourages DS Lite owners to contact our Customer Service Department if they are not happy with the functionality of their systems."

This tells us that Nintendo is very much aware of the issue and is willing to extend assistance to distraught DS Lite owners. If you happen to be a member of the DS Lite hinge crack club, Nintendo is willing to look at your units and check if the damage wasn't caused by misuse. We're just not sure how they'd figure that out, but customer service would make sure that "something wasn't tightened too tight". If that's the case then they'll repair the unit free of charge and send in a new one year warranty.

"This tells us that Nintendo is very much aware of the issue"

No, it shows Nintendo weren't aware of the issue, because no-one has been reporting it. Honestly the Lite has been out in Japan for several months now and we haven't heard of any mass returns for broken hinges from there have we? And they've bought millions of the things! Use some common sense, this has likely been blown out of all proportion by a) websites copying the story from other sites making it look like lots of independent stories about this had surfaced and b) PSP fanboys looking to get some revenge after all the dead pixel/dodgy square button/twist to eject UMD stories that were doing the rounds when the PSP came out.

My crack is different

"Well thankfully my DS is not scrached, cracked, nor broken because, unlike most people, I actually TAKE CARE of my precious DS." It's not like the people with cracked DS Lites could help it... It was like that when it came out of the box. My hinge crack does not look like the one in the picture though... mine has hairline fractures all over it. Maybe the dumba** stockboy dropped my DS at the store. I take care of my handhelds. I've had my PSP for over a year now and it's still in pristine condition.

GRRRRR!!

Man I was about to buy a DS Lite too.... Now I don't want to buy one anymore..at least untill Nintendo FIXES the whole problem (the machine that makes it, new plastic material, etc.) any opinions/what I should do? Please comment back.

Hmm...

I visited gamespot and the dslitecrackedhinges web page and noticed that the dslites from launch were more affected (lower serial numbers) so does this mean the earlier shipments/batches were more affected than the later ones?

damn

yea this is my second DS Lite now, if you notice on the DS lite when u open it the hinge seems really stiff to open compared to the original DS, i think they have tighntened the hinges too much and this has made the hinge snap,if you find the crack do not take it back to the store because like me; ur new ds will have the crack in a few months time, i havent even used my DS lite because of my previous experience and i checked this afternoon and i found a small crack :(
