It's no secret that Nintendo's success comes from the immense backing of the casual gaming market, but in her rather lively and upbeat  interview with Bitmob, Nintendo corporate affairs VP Denise Kaigler, talked about the relationship that the Nintendo has with the hardcore gamers.

Yes, the Wii makers have a relationship with the hardcore gamers, with you, believe it or not. No, we're not talking about the Nintendo of old, when the SNES pretty much dominated gaming scene. We're talking Wii and DS.

Citing Zelda, Mario Galaxy, and Smash Brothers as examples of games that did well with core gamers, Kaigler stresses that although they've pretty much made a killing with the casual market, they still had something for the core, a lot of them, in fact. At the same time, she also added that even core gamers would also enjoy going casual every now and then. Talking to her interviewer, she asks a few rhetorical questions:

How are you defining "hardcore"? Now, you define yourself as a core gamer. Do you really want to be put into a box? Do you really want someone to say, "Here's a hardcore gamer, there you go -- you do that." Or do you want to be part of a broader community that wants to have fun, that wants to be surprised, that wants to have this immersive experience in games that you can't find any place else?

Kaigler goes on to drive the point home, which I quite agree to, finding myself going for casual titles even though I'm pretty much into core gaming. Interestingly enough, she relates Nintendo's relationship with core gamers to keeping them wanting more.

We don't want your appetite to ever be satisfied, because when we satisfy you, it's time for us to go [dusts off hands], "OK! Let's go on home now!" And none of us wants to go home. So there's this sort of fun...relationship, I think, that's happening between Nintendo and the hardcore gamer -- which we enjoy and hope that the core gamer enjoys it.

Sure is an interesting way to put it. On one hand, wanting more is would a good thing since that'd translate into sales. On the other hand, not keeping the market happy enough would translate into, well, zilch. Judging by their success, Nintendo's done a good job of keeping both those hands balanced.

Meh.

Zelda was an uber disappointment, Smash Bros. took some great game play and made it so even your grandmother could win. (I'm looking at you smash balls), and Super Mario Galaxy was the most amazing thing ever. Seriously, besides the awesomeness of SMG, Nintendo isn't on my BFF list. (And I grew up on Nintendo).

Nintendo play it cool.

What a lame statement. Is she saying Nintendo are actually making immersive and fun games? In my experience, most of their games are simplistic in design, have very little in terms of immersion for the player, and recycle the same crap over and over throughout the game experience. They are the kings of half assing and ripping people off imo. There are so many brand new players these days and they really don't have enough of a background to even realize the flaws. Eventually they will and Nintendos strategy will go out the window.

Correct

You are both very right. I agree with the above two posts. I also grew up on Nintendo and have owned just about every system they churn out. I am really not feeling my Wii.. It just sits there.. None of the games (I even own) appeal to me much. The social networking built into the PS3 and 360 is sort of what draws me to them on a day to day basis, leaving the Wii and it's friend code system to gather dust.

LMAO

A relationship with the hardcore gamers? Do you hear yourself talk Nintendo? Where's Fatal Frame 4? Oh wait, I forgot, Reggie stated "We're not the publishers and idk who is", but nintendo WAS in fact the publishers reason why it's on Wii exclusive. And now it's a Japan exclusive and it's not going to appear anywhere but Japan. The amount of crap I have to endure of nintendo's idiocy is mindboggling. I'm a nintendo's fan but come on, the hardcore titles on the Wii is completely lacking. The controls of Wii remote hasn't been utilized, you get games like dead rising where the amount of enemies is appalling, graphics is subpar and poor decision making. I also am a Nintendo's fan, back when playing NES/SNES and quite honestly, I just cannot seem to like them these days, especially with the Fatal Frame 4 incident. Another series I played on PS2, but yet some how I get shafted not only since it's on the Wii exclusively, but I won't be able to play it in the states. Don't get me wrong, they have done great work on the casual crowd, but other than Wii Sports, Fit(yoga too) they haven't produced anything innovative or used the Wii remote to it's potential. I'd like to call myself MediumCore. While I do play some hardcore games, I also play lesser core games like sports and *****. But, even then, the core games has been lacking on the Wii and until they restore any faith on that(for starters get FF4 to the states; or just release it on PS3 and 360 everywhere), then I'll never be as happy with them. :(

Satisfaction

""Now, you define yourself as a core gamer. Do you really want to be put into a box? Do you really want someone to say, "Here's a hardcore gamer, there you go -- you do that."" ...Yes I do. I've owned every Nintendo system to date and have always been a huge fan of there big titles up to this point in their life. They've got 0 games coming in the near future that interest me. They're pushing out too many shallow games and my Wii gets very little play and it saddens me to death. I want more Zelda, more Mario, more Metroid, more Pikmin. More of the same stuff they've been putting out because when they try something new they try to aim at people who aren't me and I bought my Wii for me. Don't know about you (lol) Whats wrong with satisfying your fans? Thats the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Sony satisfies me. Microsoft satisfies me. Don't dust off your hands and say thats it just because I was satisfied with Zelda. Lube them back up and start satisfying me some more...with both hands. Because a satisfied gamer is a loyal gamer. When have you ever known a human being to give up satisfaction? If something is good, a human will stick with it. Its up to you (Nintendo) to keep gamers interested. Playing the c0cktease isn't going to make gamers happy...thats how people get raped.

Agreed

with everyone up above and, like them, my Wii isn't really used for anything other than playing Medal of Honor: Heroes 2, SSBM, and homebrew; I've also grown up with every Nintendo console sans the Virtual Boy. I have no idea why Nintendo thinks they're confident with their hardcore gamers; apparently they haven't lurked through message boards and news sites like this to see what their fans think of their decisions on matters... Hoping to get a PS3 soon

Book > Cover

Forgive me for judging a book by its cover, but I find it hard to believe that a 45 year-old black FEMALE has any understanding of hardcore gamers, their habits, and what they want. Sorry but she just doesn't fit the demographic. I would no more trust her opinion on videogames, than I would trust my mom's (55 year old white FEMALE) opinion on 80's punk rock. Call me closed minded, but I know I'm not the only.

Just go ahead and say it!

Nintendo does not give a f*ck about hardcore gamers. They're making too much money being soulless sellouts. They're sick of putting EFFORT into making their products better. Now they're trying to convince us hardcore gamers that put Nintendo in a leading market position to buy crap casual games that are fun for 5 minutes at most? Once again, you can go f*ck yourselves Nintendo. If anyone had any common sense, they would realize all Nintendo's products are horribly overpriced and obsolete with pretty much no redeeming qualities.
