Nintendo to bundle pedometer with Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver

Those who have been playing Pokemon games since the late 90s may remember the Pokemon Pikachu, a pedometer (that's peDOmeter, not PEdometer) that could unlock data on the original Pokemon Gold, Silver, and Crystal games. For the Gold and Silver DS remakes, Nintendo is once again bundling a pedometer with the games, this time calling it the PokeWalker.

By interfacing with a DS via infrared, you can transfer a Pokemon over to the PokeWalker, which looks like a flattened Pokeball with a small screen. Think Tamagotchi and you're on the right track. As you walk around carrying the device, the Pokemon you loaded onto it will gain experience and affection for you.

The PokeWalker will also convert your steps into "watts" which can then be used to catch wild Pokemon and search for tools.

Nintendo has yet to announce whether every copy of Heart Gold and Soul Silver will be bundled with the PokeWalker or if it will only be available as part of a separate bundle. If it's the former, expect the price point for these two games to be a bit higher than other Pokemon games for the DS.

I believe the actual game cartridge will have some sort of infrared port.

That's the case with Personal Trainer: Walking (Aruite Wakaru Seikatsu Rhythm DS).
