Nintendo's Satoru Iwata is not impressed by the recently-announced iPad. In an interview with the New York Times, Iwata called the iPad nothing more than a big iPod Touch.

"It was a bigger iPod Touch," said Iwata. "There were no surprises for me." Apple officially announced the iPad on Wednesday.

The Nintendo president also expressed misgivings towards 3D videogaming. Although he welcome 3D movies in theaters, he remained critical of 3D's encroachment into the home gaming space.

''I have doubts whether people will be wearing glasses to play games at home. How is that going to look to other people?'' said Iwata, who also added that Nintendo will have to look into possible health effects that come with prolonged 3D gaming.

As for their new hardware, Iwata outright denied rumors that Nintendo is working on motion control-equipped DS and Wii HD. He did add however that Nintendo engineers are working on new machines.

As if swinging around with a remote would look "normal" for any person not involved....

First, the iPad could be a great idea if it were able to function like a giant Kindle and you could download textbooks and stuff to it for school. I could definitely see it as a college accessory (I don't know anything about the iPad so maybe it does it already).

Second, 3D gaming is probably going to be the future, but what about people who already wear glasses and can't get contacts? What do they have for them? Maybe he's still mad about the Virtual Boy lol

Ew, Virtual Boy? That brings bad memories.

It was all in black and red. But it did have some good games.

Not flaming in the least but you need to read into the glasses for 3d games a bit. They are designed to go over top of eyeglasses as well as the person who doesn't wear them.

Of course he is doubting it. When you cannot make anything worth while and gimmicky, I'd be doubting competition as well.

First of all, for those of you making lame DSiLL jokes... Satoru never claimed the DSiLL will change the handheld gaming world as we know it. So he is "inline with his comments" as Steve claimed the iPad will change the whole computing world.

With that said, Satoru is an idiot. He should get to know the products he's talking about before talking about them. The iPad is nothing more then a large iPhone!!! Not iPod. The iPad runs a fork of the iPhone OS. The iPod OS is a fork from the iPhone OS as well. To my knowledge the iPod Touch doesn't have either GPS or 3G data capabilities. The only difference with the iPad OS from the iPhone OS is it's missing the actual phone app and other apps have been upgraded.

The iPad is a total failure in my mind. Steve claims this unit is between a netbook and laptop? BS!!! It's BELOW a netbook. With a netbook I can browse the ENTIRE WEB. This iPad POS unit has no flash support!!! And why the hell did they NOT include a camera? Can you imagine the major sales point of sitting somewhere all casual like and carrying on a video chat with someone? That alone could have sold the unit. Also with a netbook you can run MORE THEN ONE APP AT A TIME!!!! This unit, being nothing more then an iPhone can only run one app at a time (aside from system specific apps).

FAIL!!!!

The iPad is too expensive to be a gaming machine. That's not it's market so WTF Satoru is even commenting on it in that manor is beyond any logical thought process. However, with that aside, YES there will be some kick ass games made for it because they WILL SELL A LOT of these and games will sell like hot cakes.

Honestly, if I had $500 (or $630 or whatever the 3G addition is) to piss out my rear I would buy one just so I could play my app store games on a 9" screen. Now if the damn thing would support flash I would buy it in a heartbeat!!!! Money well spent for me at that point but nope, Steve has his head up his ass as always!!!

We all know Apple could fill this thing with a big steaming turd and as long as it looks good all the sheep will line up to buy it.

I'm not impressed with his crap Wii console. He obviously hasn't even touched an iPad. Finally what a ridiculous glasses comment. People already wear glasses round the world to watch their television at home. Just because the lenses are darker. Ha!!

SERIOUSLY IWATA!? DSi LL large DS and he complains about how people will look with 3D glasses on but jumping around with wii motes and lame wii balance boards is ok is it. I think the only reason he doesn't like 3D gaming is because his company is too cheap to implement it

people with one eye cannot see in 3d period. not in even real life. you need two eyes for that.

Hey, I've been gaming in 3d for years! I use shutterglasses with my PC (well now I use red/blue glasses since my flatpanel can't support the refresh rates anymore)

Good points on the ridiculous wiimote action, at least shutterglasses look like sunglasses, which most people think look cool.

Hey, didn't nintendo consider making a Head-Mounted display for the wii originally?

You'll see 3D gaming hit consoles in a big way once the HDTV's can do refresh rates higher than 80Hz, and they include depolarization filters in them.

Better yet, lenticular autostereo displays that require no glasses, then nintendo won't have any excuses!

Nintendo once again bleeding hubris. Every time they get on top, they think they can dictate how the industry and consumers will move. They got left in the lurch with 16-bit gaming and lost market share to Sega. They said that CD based media wasn't viable for gaming and almost ended up dead last in 5th gen. They downplayed online gaming and *did* end up dead last in 6th gen. They innovate for the 7th gen and lead in sales, but it's apparent they've learned nothing about trying to dictate the pace of the market with dismissing the importance of HD and 3D gaming.
