Nintendo Places 5th in Top 100 Developers

Develop Magazine released their list of Top 100 Developers according to the 2005 sales of their games in the United Kingdom. Nintendo placed 5th in the list, a move up from 28th the year before. The Nintendo DS and Nintendogs were noted as the largest reasons why.

"It’s a measure of the success of DS in the UK (as everywhere else) that Nintendo managed to jump 23 places this year. An amazing 79 percent of its revenue came from DS software, with the port of trusty old Super Mario 64 being the single biggest seller. But in true Pok?n-style, it was the three Nintendogs releases which really gained Nintendo places - over £6 million ($10 million) in a mere three months while Mario Kart DS and Wario Ware Touched! also performed well."

The company that took #1 was EA Canada who developed FIFA and Need For Speed which became mega-hits in the UK. EA Canada was #1 the year before as well. Click "Read" for the full Top 100.

If you read the post, it says they ranked it according to the sales of the games of the respective companies. EA Canada had great sales in UK through Need For Speed and FIFA. They are definitely not the "200th" company out there. I enjoy their games as well. NHL is the only sports series I play. They're also the brains behind SSX, a game people generally love as well.

this shows the decline of videogames, firstly nintendo doing really well with nintendogs and brain age... for god's sake these aren't REAL videogames! they're made for the odd noob on a bus or train to have a quick go at every now and then. a real videogame is not a souped up sudoku or tamagotchi! mario64 is good but it's also about 8 years old.

and then there's the fact that ea are up there, all they do is make derivative clones of their previous titles; they aim for the lowest common denominator with the likes of fifa and nfs....

'games' are constantly changing, but it looks to me like they're getting worse.

Nintendogs is a simulation game, just like The Sims. They are expanding the demographic, which is a good thing. Are movies only for a certain age group? No, they're for everyone. Video games should be that too. Movies aren't just about action movies. Games are not just about action games.

I'm cool with the 360 and PS3 keeping up with the games they do but what about my 2yr old nephew? Can't play M rated games around him... I even got my mom to like the DS. It looks like we will see enough games for everyone this gen!

i understand where everyone is coming from, i for one enjoy animal crossing and wouldn't mind having a quick go on brain train. but i stand by my assertion that this is worrying... i feel i must change tack slightly:

nintendo are aiming rev. at non-gamers, and i think that's all good and well, but i'm not a non-gamer. as such this means a company which usually produces some real good stuff is starting down a path which won't interest me. what if the next zelda (after twilight princess) is dumbed down to the extent that it can simply be played 'casually' and by waving that remote control?

havign said that there's almost no one in my household who'll play games with me as they're not accessible enough... so maybe this new approach will simply lead ot the 'hardcore gamer' such as myself having more friends/family to play with.

ps, i'm glad no one argued the ea point.

# Hopefully there will be hardcore games toossj3fox 2006-04-18 04:05
Nintendo claims that there will still be hardcore games. It's hard to believe but some DS games are for gamers. Look at Metroid, or Trauma Center. There a lot of good looking RPG games too. I feel, that even though it is hard to understand, there games like Zelda will not be "dumbed down" but enhanced in was we can't see because it is so new. I'm sorry I can't really provide a lot of evidence but because of the DS (and games like the new Zelda for it ) I have fate in Nintendo.

Take a look arould

Aslo the DS game Tony Hawk's American Sk8land got better scorces then the Xbox 360 game Tony Hawk's American Wasteland

# more disturbance...Guest 2006-04-19 10:39
can anyone think of a good original game for a handheld?

now how about one for a non handheld console?

shows the developers priorities... non handhelds have greater abilities and therefore greater wow factor, which is what developers are looking for

one more thing the only good thing that has come of ea in my opinion is BF2 for pc. but even in that there are quite a few glitches followed by numerus updates, followed by other glitches... well at least they try to fix it

no game should have a glitch, that is selling an unfinished product. and theres no such thing as a computer glitch, only human error, computers just do what they're told.

I don't think there is a single one that doesn't... Programing is a lot harder than you make it no.13. Try it for yourself some time. I might get back into it but after tring to code for Quake 1 back when I lost intresst.
