Nintendo: not affected by economic crisis, ramping up Wii production by 33% |
Ó
Reggie Fils-Aime, President of Nintendo of America:One of our competitors projects they will sell 10 million consoles worldwide this year. For us, that's three months of production [for the Wii].
Ohhhh, burn! In case you missed it, he was talking about the PlayStation 3. This is a nice change - it's usually Sony and Microsoft doing the cat fights.
Fils-Aime has the right to be snotty though. The Wii is still selling like hotcakes despite the world's current economic problems. In fact, while Sony slashed its earnings forecast by 57%, Nintendo is looking pretty sprightly. Fils-Aime comments on the economic crisis' effect on Nintendo:
We have not seen any negative impact. The sales data show both the Wii and the DS up in September over a year ago.
The Wii continues to be largely sold out at retail. We know consumers see our form of entertainment as a strong value because the entire family can play and because each game has more than 50 hours of play time.
So despite the crisis, Nintendo's still going strong. In fact, they're finally addressing the shortage problem by ramping up production by 33%. About time.

"Ohhhh, burn! In case you missed it, he was talking about the PlayStation 3. This is a nice change - it's usually Sony and Microsoft doing the cat fights."
Yes but the PS3 has actual games that are worth playing. Wish Nintendo would give more games for the hardcore crowd, since im sure most of us have played a few of those worth playing on the Wii.
Id rather have a console that sells like crap and has good games then one that is blazing the others but has crappy games only 3 year olds would enjoy...
Yes the Wii is missing out on a selection of games for more enthusiastic gamers, but the PS3's not all encompassing either, that thing's awful for social games.
Don't try pointing out one or two social titles it has, because I could do the same with the Wii for you. The PS3 is lacking in areas exactly the same as the Wii does. Neither of them is perfect. (And the 360 isn't either before someone jumps in to say something.)
The Wii's the PS2 of this gen. Yes it does get some absolute trash shovelware, but that's just because of the success. Have a look, and you'll find some real gems, exactly the same situation as we had with the PS2.
Im not a fanboy..
The wii has the most flaws out of both systems. Its way overpriced for the hardware even hte 360 is cheaper!
Nintendo isnt providing for the hardcore fans that kept them in buisness during the tougher times.Instead it keeps releasing things like Wii fit,Music etc that they know will sell.
The Wiis good games are a few between with most devs treating it as a PS2.
Ya the devs are treating it like the ps2 buuuuutttt around this time when the ps2 came out it still had alot more better games. I just wish there would be no more games all about mini games.
You may not be a fanboy but your comments are unfounded.
"Yes but the PS3 has actual games that are worth playing."
So does the Wii.
"The wii has the most flaws out of both systems."
Between the PS3 and Wii? I'd say they are about the same. There is no data that suggest otherwise. They are both solid systems.
