Nintendo named 'World's Best Company' for 2009 |
Ó

Despite recent setbacks profits-wise, Nintendo's success in this console generation is a hard thing to argue against. In recognition of the DS and Wii's dominance in their respective markets, BusinessWeek and management consulting firm A.T. Kearney recently gave Nintendo the top spot in their World's Best Companies 2009 list.
BusinessWeek cited the company's "continued emphasis on innovation" as a key ingredient in its success:
Japanese electronics maker Nintendo (7974.T) claims the No. 1 spot this year. Its sales have risen 36% annually over the past five years, while its value growth averaged 38%. Despite the hard times of the past year, Nintendo's continued emphasis on innovation has helped the company develop must-haves such as the DS handheld game machine and the Wii console, which outsold rival offerings from Sony (SNE) and Microsoft (MSFT).
Nintendo is followed by Google and Apple at second and third place, respectively. Neither Sony nor Microsoft made it into the 40-company list.

Comments [refresh]
That is just too funny! I look forward to the douchebaggery that's about to follow in the comments section! LOL
Nintendo > ( Microsoft & Sony )
it just shows.. theres more casual gamers (ie. ppl who know nothing about video games, like... 4 year olds...)
than
hardcore gamers who scream... "three hundred and sixty and PS triple and PaintShopPro have the best graffiks!!!"
Are you the casual hater? or the more common fan boy?
Btw the award wasn't for best gaming console but best company meaning profit, growth and other things which I don't understand.
You need to give it a rest, man. Your beginning to be more annoying than the actual fanboys....
Profit-wise, Nintendo won big-time.
Innovation, casuals, all that stuff have nothing to do with this ranking other than that's what drove the sales. I think they earned it. Others will disagree.
But profits don't lie (barring the occasional big-time fraud or something.)
Did Sony and Microsoft seriously make no improvement in sales even though Win 7 is being handed out like confetti (Compared to Vista). I would expect them to be with the ranks of Apple and Google.
Sony is researching Sci-Fi tech like wireless electricity. So i wouldn't really expected them to be on the top 10 but at least 30th.
But hey Nintendo does deserve it for making a idea which sounded.....nuts.....work.
How's that? Because exactly what I said is happening as I type this.
Funny is funny...don't like it? Then why are you reading the comments? I love the entertainment and I stated as such.
@Bountyhunter53 - The reason for that is saturation.
Example:
Nintendo makes 1 million dollars in a year.
Microsoft makes 1 billion dollars in the same year.
Yet, Nintendo get's the bunsiness award. Why?
Because in the previous year Nintendo only made 500,000. Microsoft on the other hand made an equal 1 billion in the prior year.
That's why you wont see Microsoft on this list.
Apple is living off of iPhone/iPod sales. Most of their "increase" has nothing to do with Macs.
Meanwhile Microsoft continues to churn out major cash. Remember Microsofts' biggest revenue comes from business software and operating systems. The 360 is nothing but a drop in the bucket.
They did fix unmodded Wii's for free, which is pure awesome!
Unlike some companies that charge you $150 when it was their fault.
"What are some traits of the World's Best Companies? A commitment to innovation, diversified portfolios, aggressive expansion, strong leadership, and a clear vision for the future."
Ok, so how did Nintendo claim the #1 spot acording to management consulting firm A.T. Kearney?
Innovation: Ok, so the wiimote proved to be a great recycled last gen console seller for Nintendo. What revolutionary innovations have come out of the mario factory in the 3 years since? 2 different $20 plastic wiimote holders, a $30 microphone, a $100 interactive bath scale, and a $20 add on sensor for each controller.
The DS was fairly innovative at launch in 2004, but since it has gotten MORE EXPENSIVE without receiving any useful features. The same old DS hardware has had 3 revisions with different control layouts and connectors, with absolutely no INNOVATION.
Nintendo FAILS at innovation.
Aggressive expansion: Nintendo never was a small company, and they refused to make enough Wii systems for 2 years, so there wasn't much expansion in manufacturing that's for sure. Do they mean market expansion? I would say more like market ABANDONMENT.
Strong leadership: HA HA HA HA!!!! HA HA HAAA!!!
At Nintendo? A company that RECYCLES their games over and over because they don't want to spend money? A company that RECYCLES their hardware over and over while raising prices? Inventors of the revolutionary bath scale controllers? Always pushing sales of one useless Wii accessory before moving on to another? Leaders that sit back and do NOTHING while relying on ONE successful technology bought off another company? Leaders that brainwash children into loving their products, then not making enough for years to distress hardworking parents worldwide?
Nintendo has retarded leadership that has gotten very lucky in recent years.
Clear vision of the future: Nintendo's plans for the future? Continue recycling software and hardware while implementing minimal improvements of course! The casual game crowd has been proven to have LOW standards for quality, and are easily amused by the most braindead of games. Nintendo, the LAZIEST game maker, is perfect for catering to those who are so easily amused.
Nintendo has NO plans for a successful future.
See! This is exactly what I mean. Here you have someone who has PROVEN OVER AND OVER AGAIN to have ZERO business sense and here he is trying to explain how the experts are wrong and how he is right.
You notice the ONLY thing he uses for his data are his OWN OPINIONS.
Sorry moron, your opinions are not data and they certainly are not facts.
You claim the casual market is filled with idiots for no other reason then them being casual yet you FAIL to realize that there are simply more casual players then non casual players. You insist on putting a higher value on non-casual players and that's where you FAIL over and over again. Even MS and Sony realized they missed the casual boat and after YEARS of the Wii's success they only NOW try to capture the casual market.
So here's a NEW FACT that can be derived from your own actions. You are DUMBER then Microsoft and Sony. Gee, go figure!!!
Haven't the Wii's oversold and resulted in a flooded market? . I would've guessed that people buying the cheaper preowned Wii would lower their sales by quite a bit. Especially after Wii's price is close to entry PS3's and 360's.
Just sent in my PS3 for YLOD but this was the day before the update and it YLOD'd overnight. My launch date PS3 gone :'(
Mister common sense it is common sense that statistical numbers never lie but opinions can always be objected and proved to be wrong. You can object that Sony is the best company in the world. But cannot object that sales growth of Nintendo has gone up by 38%.
It's ironic how u contradicted your name. "Mister Common Sense
The used market isn't all that great. Never underestimate the power of a warranty :)
I would like to see REAL numbers in regards to how many Wiis are purchased for individual use versus gifts.
As for a saturated market. I don't think so. That term can't possibly apply to a market that caters to young and old (everyone). After all, every month, TENS OF THOUSANDS of kids turn console age in the US alone. Now spread that across the world. That's just one tiny little aspect.
i can understand why microsoft didnt get the top spot.. I dont even need to go into that.. Sony has been failing recently ( WHY SONY WHY ? NOOOOOO ! *****iinq stupid Ways of life .. )
Nintendo hasnt messed up so badly .. But they can never do a good job at coding -__- ..
Once Sony Gets back on their feet .. They will kill everything .. Execpt apple .. Apple still isnt fully into the gaming business .. I think they accidentally entered .. And it was a good thing ..
SONY IS THE BEST . Microsoft is good at making PC Operating systems .. But windows vista sucked .. windows 7 is much better .. Windows Aero still screws it though ..
Gosh im off topic .. Oh well .
"You notice the ONLY thing he uses for his data are his OWN OPINIONS."
Of course I am giving opinions! Opinions from a consumer point of view, not a corporate greed POV. I am mentioning concerns to purchasers of nintendo products, those who regularly get screwed.
"Sorry moron, your opinions are not data and they certainly are not facts."
Again, where did I say I had facts? Maybe you are comparing my opinions to facts because there's so much truth to them?
On paper, Nintendo's numbers are impressive in sales and profits. It wasn't the work of brilliant leadership, but DUMB LUCK!
ISOheavy here doesn't realize that this list is merely the OPINION of a no name consulting company! Moreover, could this list have a more deceiving name? How about "most greed and profits in a short time"
Nintendo might just take the crown in that category!
"You claim the casual market is filled with idiots for no other reason then them being casual yet you FAIL to realize that there are simply more casual players then non casual players. You insist on putting a higher value on non-casual players and that's where you FAIL over and over again. Even MS and Sony realized they missed the casual boat and after YEARS of the Wii's success they only NOW try to capture the casual market."
I don't think the entire casual market is full of idiots (although you come to mind) they just have LOW STANDARDS.
Nintendo's ONLY priority has switched to the casual market, completely abandoning their old market. This is why nintendo's leadership is sooo STUPID. Just because casual idiots are buying their overpriced crap left and right, they think things will stay the same.
Now there's 2 new competitors in the casual game market, but they also cater to hardcore gamers. How are they planning for that?
Big game releases, NO
Price reductions on older games, NO
Another useless accessory, YES
System bricking firmware update, YES
Take Nintendo's current "casual" market share, divide by three, add their old hardcore fans (very few) and they're set up to be last AGAIN in the console race next generation.
The "experts" gave google a #2? Is this a list of MOST EVIL corporations? Check this out: http://www.theonion.com/content/video/google_opt_out_feature_lets_users
What's the exact "console age" for children again?
Let me try to imagine this scenario......
"Here you go little Billy, now that you're "console age", here's a DS and Wii for your birthday!"
"Now I can be bothered with all the upcoming nintendo accessories and games you want me to buy for you!"
"All children must own nintendo products at console age, 10,000 a month guaranteed sales."
That's a quote from somebody with business sense! HA HA HA!!
I guess nintendo's fans have come to expect so little they act like fixing nintendo's own dumb mistake (rather than make you pay a big repair bill) is a huge favor.
Refresh my memory.... Did Sony or Microsoft release a system update that bricked consoles, then make anyone pay to fix it?
NO
"Again, where did I say I had facts?"
You BETTER use facts when you call someone a LIAR. You constantly babble off accusations and call Nintendo a bunch of liars who rip people off. When you make such claims YOU NEED FACTS.
None of which you have. You're nothing buy an *****. On top of that, ALL OF YOUR OPINIONS are based on FALSE information thus your opinions are nothing but BS.
Your opinions are as meaningless as yourself.
Here's an example:
"I don't think the entire casual market is full of idiots (although you come to mind) they just have LOW STANDARDS."
Ok, so NOW you claim the whole market isn't idiotic. In the past you HAVE so good job on backpeddling that one. Yet you AGAIN claim the WHOLE CASUAL MARKET has low standards. Here you claim that over 56 MILLION PEOPLE have low standards. Based on WHAT? You base that on absolutely NOTHING. That comment alone makes you a total *****. That's not even an opinion on your part. That is nothing but absolutely crap. Something you are certainly full of.
I love my Wii and I DO NOT have low standards. I just used FACT to prove you WRONG. See how that works? Go learn something.
Once again you FAILED at getting the simplest point.
"That's a quote from somebody with business sense"
If that's a quote then give your source!!! No source? Then you are, as always, a LIAR. I said no such thing. I said nothing about a guarantee and I said nothing about "10,000".
Go learn how to f@cking read you jackass.
Normally, I use facts to prove Nintendo representatives of being liars. Check it out: http://wii.qj.net/Wii-price-cut-confirmed-Super-Mario-Wii-dated-plus-more-games/pg/49/aid/134754
However, the fatal flaw in your argument was: I never accused anybody of being a liar here.
You missed my earlier point, this list is an opinion, and I gave my opinion in response (because I know you love hearing it.)
The casual market does have low standards. Just look at some of the highest selling wii games. Take a look at the most hotly anticipated holiday releases. Didn't I play that "new" mario game 4 years ago on the DS? Oh no this one has new suits and more players. REVOLUTIONARY, low standards...
What were the "behind the scenes enhancements that do not affect any prominently-used features or menus but will improve system performance." again?
Oh yes system bricking.
"The casual market does have low standards."
No, it does not. A group of 50 plus million people do not have "standards". The idea alone is impossible.
All in all it's good know that YOU believe what you type is nothing but OPINION. Like myself and OTHER PEOPLE ON THIS PAGE have pointed out, your opinions are based on bogus information. Information that is not real.
You're a biased douche and nothing more.
Once again you FAIL at the simple. Nothing in your last post has anything to do with the topic here. But I'll address it anyway. As always, WTF is your point? A system or product does NOT need improvements all the time in order to be worthy.
Want PROOF?
Want FACTS?
The Wii is worthy based on HUMAN BEING popularity. It does not get improvments very often. Thus you are WRONG!!!!!!!!!! !! As always.
Keep failing! It's hilarious!!!!
Let me spin it back onto you.
According to your BS theory (btw, you are full of a TON of BS!).... The entire 360 market has low standards. Only an IDIOT would buy and own a 360. With over 50% failure rate that console is a JOKE!!!! Less then 50% of them work. That's a seriously low standard of hardware quality which I magically pass onto the consumer and claim the entire 360 consumer market is a low quality standard.
Grow the f@ck up you jackass!
Oh, and your link up there doesn't prove anything. I already explained to you why that wasn't a lie. As always you never "get it".
"According to your BS theory (btw, you are full of a TON of BS!).... The entire 360 market has low standards. Only an IDIOT would buy and own a 360."
Actually, I said idiots buy systems with few games that score higher than a 5 out of 10 with most game reviews, but go on...
"With over 50% failure rate that console is a JOKE!!!! Less then 50% of them work."
I had no idea [more than 50%] of XBOXes don't work. You have one right? Oh so you don't have any clue what you're talking about again?
"That's a seriously low standard of hardware quality which I magically pass onto the consumer and claim the entire 360 consumer market is a low quality standard."
You could say the Wii has low hardware quality as well. For a console that is RARELY used by most people, Wiis do have their fair share of failures, mostly drive related. Wiis just have 10 year old technology, so they don't get hot and develop hardware failures (unless you update to 4.2 firmware.)
I prefer the PS3 myself, which has great hardware AND great software.
"Grow the f@ck up you jackass!"
Wow, that was childish.
"Oh, and your link up there doesn't prove anything. I already explained to you why that wasn't a lie. As always you never "get it". "
The link is for Onion news. FAKE news that's funny. You don't understand anything. Here's another link you wouldn't find the least bit funny:
http://www.theonion.com/content/video/bush_tours_america_to_survey
"I had no idea [more than 50%] of XBOXes don't work. You have one right? Oh so you don't have any clue what you're talking about again?"
I had three you idiot. I've told you that many times. But I don't expect you to remember facts or figures. You just fly off the seat with whatever current idiot emotions you are feeling at that time.
"For a console that is RARELY used by most people"
Here you are again MAKING UP INFORMATION. You are such a waste of time...
"Wiis just have 10 year old technology"
And yet we now have Sony and MS scrambling to COPY that 10 year old technology. HAHAHAHA!!!!!!!
"Wow, that was childish."
Not really, you have a LOT of growing up to do and you are a jackass.
