Nintendo is Microsoft's 'the one that got away' |

Everyone's got a the-one-that-got-away story. Maybe it's a fish. A fair girl or boy.Or a great job opportunity that pays twice as much for less work and without a boss who is a product of a genetic project involving humans and pit bulls. Now it can be told. Before the bloody next-gen console war began between the Xbox 360 and Wii, Microsoft actually wanted to bag Nintendo! According to what is now part of corporate history, MS didn't want to build a game console from scratch. Instead, the company wanted to purchase a company already in the business of making game consoles. And Nintendo was just shiny enough to catch MS attention.
"I wanted to acquire Nintendo," recalls Rick Thompson, former vice-president of MS hardware business. However, Xbox overlord James Allard decide to do the whole project in-house. We don't know how much MS wanted to pay for Nintendo back then, but should they re-consider buying the maker of the outrageously successful DS, it will burn a hole in their pockets the size of US$ 6.378 billion. That's how much Nintendo will be worth a few months from now.
But the more interesting question is what if MS did buy Nintendo? What would the gaming world be like today? For one, the on-going next-gen console war would be less colorful with one less participant. Or perhaps MS-Nintendo would pit an Xbox 360/Wii hybrid against the PS3. What about the DS and the DS Lite? What would Gate's version of Nintendo's toast of the handheld world? No one knows for sure.
Perhaps there's a parallel universe out there where MS and Nintendo did marry each other. If we can only take peek at what's driving gamers there crazy!

As far as being on topic, Im sure MS could care less about Nintendo now since theyre doing better than Nintendo is anyways, and thats WITH the japs being such tight azzes...
Just imagine if the rest of the world didnt buy Sony products just because they are Japanese. Oh wait, we already do that, but its not because its from japan, its because it sucks. lol. Anyone wanna start using UMDs or BluRay? hahaha....

How can more competition do anything but make others work harder? Is it because you do not like the games? That still would not make any sense, as having mario or zelda or any of nintendo's games out on the market has no negative effect on you. Also, were it not for nintendo, there would be no sony playstation.

The more successful Nintendo is with their *****ty baby systems, the less likely it is for Sony and M$ to put money into all the things we want in future generations, and the more likely it is that we'll get more gimmicks and more rehashed last-gen systems from all the companies.
If Nintendo fails miserably (hopefully), then Sony and Microsoft will have no choice but to give true gamers what they want. The PS3 is by far the most impressive system ever made. Imagine how awsome the PS4 could be. Now imagine how *****ty it will be with a dildo shaped controller and *****ty graphics. Nintendo has to go.

The reason the Xbox isn't doing well in Japan is becuase there are no games that appeal to that audience available for the 360. Nintendo and Sony are both Japanese companies so they know what Japanese gamers are looking for.
By the way ralph (post 3). You may just be the most ignorant person to have ever posted on QJ. The winner of this console war is chosen by the gamers. If the Wii wins, then a majority of the gamers do not care about graphics and would sacrifice it for new ways to play. I would hardly say Nintendo is holding anyone back, MS and Sony are free to do what they want.

You are a *****ing idiot. You do realise that there would be NO game industry without Nintendo? Do a bit of research you *****ing imbessile and don't make comments on things you obviously know nothing about you stupid n00b arsehole. M$ are n00bs on the console scene and as such are far from the best. The correct statement should be; "If only I shut up and stop being such a mindless M$ and Sony fanboy" Stupid, talentless, imagination free bastard...

Once again you display your ignorance - Sony has won the last 2 generations with graphically inferior systems!

So your only interested in graphics and power? Wow, you are just a complete arsehole. WTF is wrong with you? If you only care about graphics and not gameplay then you are an idiot. The graphics on the Wii are incredible and the reason why us Nintendo fans are true gamers is because we care about the imagination, creativity and innovation in gaming. We're not stupid *****ing Sony fanboys that only care about *****ing football and driving games. I bet you'll buy a PS3 when it comes out as well. Good luck with it. I hope it explodes the minute you get it out of the box and a bloodbath ensues.

Back to the topic, I hope Microsoft won't buy Nintendo - the games industry will crash (not saying gone forever, but won't be as big as today) because of no existance of a proper hardware game company. And thinking of Master Chief in SSB... *shudder*.
Oh and for you Sony fanboys, even though it was mentioned before, just remember how Playstation came into existance - so if no Nintendo, then no Playstation. Don't want that now do you? ;)

"Alright! I'm a TRUE GAMER NOW! Yipee!". Nintendo is giving their audience what they want, and people buy them because they decided they want it, if it was so awful, then it would flop and you have nothing to worry about. You know what? I've seen all the tech demo's for ps3, and I am not impressed, it no longer interests me to pay a premium for the same games with prettier textures, it no longer matters. It wasn't until the wii that I actually cared about purchasing a console once again, I was sticking with the PC. People want different things, you treat it like religion, like the world is ending because nintendo exists. Oh and by the way, last generation the playstation 2 was the weakest system graphically, but I bet you don't hate on it.
The more nintendo succeeds the less likely sony and M$ can put into systems? Hello? Microsoft is pissing away money at the xbox and can do so virtually indefinately if they so please, the same with sony. If so many people decide they want something different as opposed to just blowing more cash on an updated version of what they already have, then that is democracy, you are so worried that your demographic is going to go uncatered to. Regardless of what happens, if there is a market for money to be made from and demand for something, someone will fill it. End of story. Your argument holds no water whatsoever.

If Microsoft would only need to pay a measley $6+ billion to acquire Nintendo and crush them out of existence, they would've done it faster than you can say "DLL hell".

BTW, if no one bought Sony products then
A) Xbox 1 would have had a chance in the game market
B) We'd all still be using VCRs or some old technology.
Face it, Sony HAS been a huge developer of electronics, because they helped develop the DVD format, CD format, and invented a commonly used type of Television. Give them some goddamn credit.

Now on the 3rd post isue, i wouldnt say nitendo is promoting a gimmick it seems quite fun, while i wouldnt buy one just yet id love to try one out. While for me the ps3 is probably the only console ill buy, i do admit thet if I see a wii at a bargain( around 0) price ill have no problem picking one up just because its a fresh experience. But I wouldnt give up the games ive come to love from playstation on something thats not fully proven.

Ninetendo would be nowhere without them, and yet nintendo was the one to wipe the hard of the face of the earth, now sonys hear to do the same ***** to nintendo, and I got a feeling M$ is gonna rape sony. CONSOLE WARS!!!!!!

Trust me, it IS possible to like all three companies and all three of the new systems. You all need to pop some Ritalin, chill out, and play a board game or go outside so you remember that arguing on the Internet is stupid, pointless, a waste of time, and all manner of other things that don't matter in the slightest.

RedHat Linux "got away"
Apple got away, and poor Zune sales and slowing windows sales will show this more and more in the future. Macintosh is getting HUGE.
Computer Associates "got away" too, as did Mozilla Firefox which is killing Internet Explorer more and more every day.
What DIDN'T get away?
PS3? December of Businessweek seems to suggest (an article also in FORBES) that Playstation 3 will dominate the market as PS2 did.

Personally I chose the Wii because I already have a powerhorse computer why would I want another one? Thats all the PS3 and X360 are. The Wii is different and when Im not playing DDR or BF2 Ill wipe out Zelda.
