Nintendo's Brain Age giftToday is  the 60th birthday of George W. Bush, the president of the United States. Now, why is that being announced on a blog about the Nintendo DS? Because Nintendo, being the wonderful company they are, gave George W. Bush a birthday gift! Aw, what a nice gesture!

Or is it?

This gift consisted of a Nintendo DS Lite and a copy of Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day. At first, this seems harmless enough, but digging deeper, you start thinking... Nah, Nintendo wouldn't, would they? Hey, who knows what was going on in their heads when they sent this little gift, but let's just say there are thousands of people laughing at the implications of this gift!

Also, just a note, I am not trying to push any political views on anybody. I am neither a Republican nor a Democrat - I am Canadian. If you can't laugh at your politicians, what can you laugh at, right? Click the thumbnail for a full picture. Read the attached letter:

Dear President Bush:

Happy Birthday!

DonÂ’t worry, turning 60 is an exciting milestone. As you know, youÂ’ve joined millions of other baby boomers in an invigorating new decade of your life. And, like many boomers, you may be looking for ways to keep your mind sharp. ThatÂ’s where we come in.

Please accept our gift of a new Nintendo DS Lite system and a copy of Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day. You now join millions of people around the world who have fun challenging themselves with Brain Age. If you have never played a video game before, donÂ’t worry. Brain Age is part of our new Touch Generations brand, which includes games that are easy for people of any age - regardless of their video game experience - to pick up and start playing immediately.

ItÂ’s obvious you donÂ’t have a lot of time to play games, which makes Brain Age such a great activity for you - just a few minutes a day with more than 15 daily training tests will help keep your mind sharp. Training tests include categories like math, reading and memorization. Try it for a few days and watch your score improve. Brain Age also comes with more than 100 sudoku puzzles - these could make your next long flight on Air Force One a bit more fun! (Perhaps copies of Brain Age for journalists joining you on your next flight would be a nice distraction!)

Have fun exploring Brain Age with your Nintendo DS Lite and be sure to let us know your brain age!

Have a tremendous birthday!

Sincerely,

Your Friends at Nintendo

Please Nintendo. Team up with Capcom and send Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney to Jack Thompson on his birthday. Heck, include Brain Age too!

...

Actualy, a brain age of three would be ingenious using the games scale (the older the worse), so nice try.

Overall...Not Pleased With Nintendo

This is hilarious in one sense and disrepectful in another. Yes, it’s funny that a President of our country is receiving a gift from Nintendo, in that we are of the video game generation and he is not. It’s funny to imagine that he would play it daily given the trivialness of it compared to the serious burden of responsibility none of us can imagine.

Which leads to the disrepectful part. Nintendo’s letter, while lighthearted for sure, immediately associates the Presidency with baby-boomer status. Marketing language right away in the face of the most executive office of our country. And Nintendo says that the President is now joining millions who play Brain Age. First, how can Nintendo assume he will play it? Second, why would Nintendo think that a President would be glad to jump on any bandwagon?

“Be sure to let us know your brain age.” So a President can help you make money. Well, if the President feels he needs to reach out to the video-game generations he can use this opportunity.

But this seems to be inevitable. Presidents in the future, by necessity, will graciously stoop to us and endorse our entertainment. It will help the economy, I suppose. But Nintendo sure knows how to not write a letter to the President but to a symbolic figure whose presence is so enigmatic that yes, even what has gravity and prestige and seriousness must become trivial for the time being for the sake of the dollar.
