Nintendo DS - Image 1It probably won't take a game industry insider to figure this out, but the Nintendo DS handheld game system will undoubtedly finish the calendar year 2007 as the top platform bar none. String sales from stop to finish has made this cycle a no-contest for the popular item.

"There's no letup in sight," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "Nintendo DS appeals strongly to both core and casual gamers, and its momentum is set to propel us into 2008."

The Nintendo statistics revealed that the Nintendo DS sells at a rate of about one every five seconds. In the United States alone, over six million units were sold in 2007.

Games like New Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart DS, Super Mario 64 and Pokemon Diamond topped the software charts with over two million sold this year. Brain Age, Big Brain Academy, Animal Crossing: Wild World, Pokemon Pearl and a handful of others have broken the one million barrier.

Nintendo also broke the most units sold for a single platform in a single week this year when the Nintendo DS eclipsed predecessor Game Boy Advance. The feat was accomplished during the recent Thanksgiving rush.

Nintendo looks forward to 2008 and promises to carry the strong momentum that has catapulted it on top of the gaming world in 2007. Without any close competitors in sight, that vow seems to hold a lot of water.
