Nintendo dominated the Japanese market last March - Image 1The latest Japanese gaming market data from Enterbrain/Famitsu was recently sent to GameDaily, and as the numbers show, it's official: Nintendo owned the market last March (February 26 to March 25 to be exact).

The report added that the hardware market had sales up by 61.7% while the software market took a dip by 29.8%, but if you're wondering about the software drop, Famitsu gave a short explanation. According to them, it is "mainly due to the lack of a title as massive as last year's Final Fantasy XII, which sold 2,058,000 copies during its debut month alone".

Regardless, Nintendo dominated both markets with authority. The DS Lite led the charge selling 504,000 units during the time period, representing 44% of total video game hardware sales. Unsurprising, GameDaily BIZ noted, as the DS has broken the 500,000 mark since April 2006. The Nintendo Wii comes in at a far second selling 263,000 consoles. The PSP came in at third with 198,000 while the PS3 sold 112,000 units. The PS2 came in at 57,000, outselling the Xbox 360 which sold 14,000 consoles.

On the software side, Nintendo took 19 out of the top 50 video games sold during the month. Nine of those made it to the top 20 slots, with four in the top ten. Yoshi's Island DS took the top slot with an estimated 455,391 thousand copies sold. The total amount of software sold by Nintendo is said to amount to over 1.4 million units.

To seal the deal, it seems that DS titles (from first and third-party developers) have sold over 2.2 million units this March with the PS2 games coming in at a far second selling just below 525,000.
