Nintendo: core games coming, but not for a few more years

Nintendo: core games in development - Image 1

Because of the absence of games for the "core gamer" in E3, Nintendo was put under the spotlight. Has Nintendo abandoned its core community? The answer is a resounding "no."

Back at E3, Shigeru Miyamoto himself explained that new Zelda and Mario games are in the works, but he didn't go much into detail about it. Now Nintendo has revealed that the "core games" in development - presumably the Zelda and Mario games Miyamoto was talking about - won't be out for a few more years:

We have never neglected our core gamers. We still have developers working on popular core gaming franchises but we need longer to complete these games, approximately two to three years.

These games are not ready to launch in early 2009 but are being worked on by all development teams.

So don't fret it, core gamers, the games are coming. Maybe not in the near future, but they are coming. Take Satoru Iwata's word for it when he commented to Forbes last month:

If there is any perception that Nintendo is ignoring the core gamers, it's a misunderstanding and we really want to get rid of that misunderstanding by any means.

Hum....I seem to remember someone else giving an resounding "no."....who was it......that's right, it was ME! And for the exact same reasons.

Nintendo can take all the time they need. I'm sure those games will rock!

# 3rd party developers and their games...Guest 2008-08-26 08:57
if we're following along the same line of thinking, Sadness and MadWorld are somewhere near the top of your list too. ^_^

Nintendo isn't even going to be in TGS this year (again), so it's 3rd party for now. Besides, if they say their games are "not ready to launch in early 2009," there's still hope it might come out by middle or late 2009.

2-3 years is around how long it takes to make a game from scratch. by the sounds of it, it sounds like they've only just started making them

even winter of 2009 is not a few more years. Ok 2012 is more like a few years. And I refuse to believe that Nintendo will be idle on any major title release from now to 2012. They must have something up their sleeve in between that consider that there had been a mario/zelda related title released every 3~4 months in between. I think a release of something Zelda/Mario/Metroid related in Nov 2009 is very reasonable. But we'll definitely see something in between. Look, after Smash Brother and Mario Kart, Slugger is coming out in a few days. So there are still Mario golf, tennis. They can always do a new mario party, Yoshi themed game. Kirby? Another Metroid? Luigi Mansion anyone?

In a few more years means in a few more years, and last time I checked, Nintendo has just recently begun work on their next generation console, leading me to believe that developing a core game for an incomplete piece of hardware wouldn't be the best of theories. Shame on your petty assumptions.

So in other words what they're saying is "We haven't forgotten you. We've just given you the lowest priority." :P
