Famitsu has revealed that a potentially huge RPG-related announcement will be made during the Square Enix Party event which will run from May 12 to May 13.

According to the schedule posted on the website, Square Enix will be holding its "Star Ocean Special Stage" on the morning of May 12. The big news here is that Square Enix will reportedly be announcing a new title in the Star Ocean franchise. A video clip (presumably from the new title) will also be shown as well as an introduction to the new characters and their voice actors.

The Star Ocean series made its debut on Nintendo's SNES, so the announcement could be for Nintendo's DS and Wii. However, the series did become popular in North America thanks to its PlayStation titles, so a PS3 or PSP installment isn't totally out of the picture.

i cant wait. Although i hope its better then its ps2 version because the one for ps2 was fun but i didnt feel like i accomplished anything. Everything felt like whats the point? so i really hope they make the story alittle more enjoyable

» if this goes to the wii....

i really hope this doesn't go to the wii, not because i'm a sony fan boy, but because i don't have a wii, and i currently have no reason to buy one. then again, i guess there's not actually a good chance this will go to the wii. the series may have started on SNES, but the past two titles have been on playstation, so, i'm putting my bets on a sony release. of course, if it's a MULTI-console one, then everyone would be happy. i just really hope it's for PSP.

» O.o

» hahaha

We all know this is going to end up on NDS or maybe even Wii , why waste money puting this on a real next-gen like ps3 with that *****ty install base if you can do a cheap ass game and sell tons for the Nintendo *****gots

» Dude. You fail.

I'm hoping this goes for PSP or PS3/PS360. SO3:Till the End of Time was beautiful, so should it's successor. This on NDS or Wii would be a disgrace to the series. Neither can rack out the power that the PS3 or 360 can. and the NDS's blocky 3D graphics would suck compared to the PSP's capabilities. Unless, over course, they insult the series and make it 2D...

» I hope...

I hope it's for the PS3 and 360, I'd love playing Star Ocean again because I'm pretty much obsessed with all of them in the past.

If it ends up on the NDS or Wii i'd be pretty upset. You're not going to be able to do much exciting with the control schemes and I'd rather see an incredibly beautiful landscape and engrossing fight scenes than some stylus/wiimote waving.

Sweet Mother Of God...

I hope this game will be remake to the psp/ps3. If it does, this is going to be the first psp game that i'm buying legit.

» Yeah

I don't care what system this comes out on I have them all. But it would be nice to see the first one on the PSP or DS. I have the rom and the SNES game for Japan.

» Yes!

Awesome, I love the Star Ocean series. A remake of the first one would be cool, but I hope it's a brand new game. Also, like everyone else, I really hope it's not on a Nintendo system. Not because I have anything against them, but because I'd like to see this game take advantage of some beefier hardware. Cross your fingers, RPG fans...

» IMO 2D would be better

Star Ocean 3 look VERY nice but the gameplay was just god awful after getting hours and hours of fun from the Second Story. Graphics took a backseat to gameplay once it went to 'next gen'

» This is awesome!!!

This is gonna be awesome!! Just one question though...

***SPOILERS***

How are they gonna continute the story after they f***ed it up with the lame 'plot twist' in SO3? I mean the whole story is just a friggin online game ;_;

by Ceno - 2007-04-28 11:08
» Wha?

Umm.. continue the story after so3? You do know this is a remake of the original star ocean 1 right? Who gives a rats a$$ how they f'd up so3. It has nothing to do with this release at all. It's 2 prequels before so3 anyway..

by AT_DA - 2007-04-28 11:40
» eh?

"A video clip (presumably from the new title) will also be shown as well as an introduction to the new characters and their voice actors. "

Doesn't indicate a remake to me. Nothing in the post does really. I don't care though, so3 is still one of my fav rpgs. Hell, even though the "real world" was full of douche bags, I wouldn't mind protecting that one from some horrid fate.

» A few opinions

If they have chosen voice actors already then they finished story and the basic designing or are close to it. Tri-Ace is working on Infinite Undiscovery for the Xbox 360 and their history shows that they wouldn't do it on the PS3/360/WII/PC/XBOX/GC. The PSP/PS2 seems the most seems the most likely seeing as they usually push the limits of any system they touch but I can't count out the GBA/DS. As the only hand held game developed by them was Star Ocean Blue Sphere for the Game Boy color.

Note: Square-Enix was the developer of the PSP version of Valkyrie Profile while Tri-Ace did the original.

While SO3 did close off the story making a sequal hard there are two major time periods that are wide open, those being anything before Star Ocean that hasn't been fully explained in any of the 4 games, and the gap between Star Ocean Blue Sphere and SO3.

» What I missed in SO3

Star Ocean II was a great game.

SO3 didn't have as many characters, nor as many interesting things to do. Right from the beginning of star ocean 2 before the Tidal Wave, you could get the thief gloves. You could run around stealing things and forging checks, and if that was fun then that's what you could do. Or you could plan ahead, collect the characters you wanted to collect and go become super strong with particular tricks people find out over time. Star Ocean II kept becoming more fun until you beat it to death, but even then this was the first rpg I played where the bosses could be difficult because they were fast, strong, had a practical potential to one hit kill, and a ton of HP. Crazy. I'm gonna go play it right now on my psp.

If the new star ocean is to be a good game, it's gonna have to be as potentially varied at SO2. It's not like SO2 story was super amazing, but they just added a lot of variables depending on the characters which made it fun.

Game-play first, graphics will come naturally with the new platform.
