Mortal Kombat DS? Not likely, says Midway studio head

Uh, where's Mario? Is he out taking the (mu)shrooms again?

Talking to Gamasutra, Midway Games Chicago studio head Scot Bayless reveals that he's not that eager to make (or port, or whatever) a Mortal Kombat game to the DS. Because it is, well, the DS.

I would be skeptical about putting an M-rated, unlicensed football game (referring to The Blitz) on certain platforms. That platform is aimed at an audience that isn’t interested – or if they are interested, their Moms and Dads won’t let them play it.

Same thing with the M-rated game that started it all: "we put the M in M-rated" Mortal Kombat.

Hey, there's Armageddon on the Wii to consider, though, not to mention Fils-Aimes' aggressive drive to get more IP on the Wii, M-rated or not. 1UP thinks this comment alone means a total shut-out for any potential for a Mortal Kombat game on the DS. We're thinking this is the personal preference of a studio head that may or may not indicate company policy at the higher levels. But his may be a valued voice - elsewhere in the interview he discusses how he was able to make a deal with Midway bigwigs on his own terms - and make them stick.

Hmm, the screenshot above of one of the mini-games in Armageddon looks interesting, though. Why not just make a Motor Kombat spin-off for the DS a la Mario Kart? (On the other hand, what will we do with the expected gore of a Kombat-affiliated game? Hide it under the wreckage?)

» Ridiculous

I'm very interested in seeing "The Blitz" on my DS and want to play it.

I'm 35. My Dad is 65. I really don't think he's going to have an issue with me playing it...

When are these idiots going to wake up to their audience? I know a lot of DS owners. Every single one is in their 20's or older.

» stoopid

i too am 28 years old and love my ds, and i know at least 3 of my friends have one too, they are all over the age of 20. I think he has a twisted vision of who actually owns ds's.

no MK on the DS is Absolutely fine with me...

and this is why.

name 1 GOOD mortal kombat that has appreared on a nintendo handheld? dont take to long because youd be wasting precious braincells..

Just about every version ported to a handheld was horrible (exception going to the PSP version) for some reason they have never been able to get it right.. weather it was lack of buttons.. or just plain horrible port.. it just wouldnt work.

i dont think the rep is speaking truthful. i think he knows that every MK game on a handheld has been horrible and is hoping to make sure they dont lose valuable reputation via a crappy port.

» Not a good idea....

The DS Has sold like ~40 Million, a very high user base. The DS has been proven to be not just for kids anymore, what year is Midway Games still suck in? 2005?

» Whuh?

How can you say that there have been no good handheld ports, then say that the PSP version was OK... The DS and the PSP are the first handhelds to support the graphics and buttons to play a complex combat game. Think about it before you speak. Its people like you that discredit the DS that work for companies like Midway and only produce for the Sony badge.

This whole issue dates back to the Nintendo vs. Sega days, when it was determined that all "rated M" type games (though there was no ESRB then) would be produced on Genesis, and Nintendo would always be the home of Mario! It kills me to think that this kind of stereotyping still goes on.

The DS is an incredibly capable system, and just as everyone else has stated above and below, it has a high user base, which consists of plenty of consenting adults and teenagers who also play XBOXs and PS2s/3s which do have those games marketed towards them. This is rediculous!!!
