Miyamoto: Not everything needs to be in 3D |
Ó
While everyone is going agog over 3D technology, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto once again goes against the flow. For him, not everything has to be in 3D.Said Miyamoto:
I don't think everything needs to be 3D, or that just because we're seeing more 2D games now, that everything's going to shift back to 2D. I think that what's going on is that people are realizing the benefits of a 3D game, and at the same time, remembering what the benefits of 2D games were. When going to 2D, you need the courage to not be so attached to visual appearance of the games and to really pursue the gameplay experience.
I'd say I agree on what he said about not being attached to the visual appearance. Games, first and foremost, are meant to be played anyway. It helps entice players more into enjoying the game, yes, but ultimately, it's the gameplay that should matter more.

If they see a game in 2D they will automatically assume it's boring and uncool, while a pile of horse dung but in ray traced, 3D glory, they will take as the next big thing, then go on forums to try to justify their expense.
So, sometimes this has to be explained, pity only the already converted listen...
The real time of maturity in the gaming world is when it doesn't matter how a game looks as much as how it plays, Robotron is better than Jericho after all!
I buy games like I buy books, there are those creators whose output I will always buy, ID, Miyamoto, Treasure etc, then there are those that tantalise just by the demo, and that's all cool, a game doesn't have to be rendered in the latest Unreal engine to warrant purchase.

If the visuals suck horribly, the gameplay is awesome, and the graphics don't detract from the gameplay (can't see to jump/shoot/whatever), I don't care.

Of course, the art direction of the game has a lot to do with it. I was playing the Ratchet and Clank demo earlier today and that game looked superb to me.

Eye candy adds so much to a game I feel. MGS4 wouldn't have been half the game it was if the visuals weren't absolutely breathtaking. They introduced a whole new level of integration with a game...
Of course bad gameplay would ruin a game for me as well, but it seems that games that look AMAZING usually play amazing just because good graphics shows the dev team is truly dedicated.

There are a scant few exceptions (Mirror's Edge looked great and had a very interesting play mechanics, given you didnt just mug someone for their gun and shoot everything.) but those exceptions only solidify the rule

On XBOX or PS3 this would be downloadable for $10.

The console format has nothing to do with anything, it's all about the games and, to be honest, there is enough available for all three major home consoles to warrant purchasing each, be it for Super Mario Galaxy, Halo 3 or Uncharted.
Don't care if it's Clubhouse Games, Geometry Wars 2 or Flower either, all good, regardless of format or use of the "3rd Dimension".
It's good to be a format agnostic.
Remember, if you happen to meet a fanboy of any ilk, shoot him on the spot, you'll be doing us all a favour!

And have you even PLAYED the game? Considering MCS's hate of the Wii, I would guess he hasn't.
If the game is good and worth it, who cares if it's 2D or 3D or 4D or made with a low budget? I don't think I've ever been let down by a normal 2D platformer Mario game, so I wouldn't expect to be now either.
I say read ciderman's post below, as his view seems to be the most balanced, considering I like the Wii more and can't justify buying an Xbox360 my personal viewpoint is of course skewed.

I played the 3 versions of it on the NES.
I played the SNES game.
I played the GBA versions.
I played the near-identical DS version.
It's the same game for all practical purposes, even the music is recycled.
Nintendo has no creative talent anymore, they just recycle crap and shove it out the door. Even SMB 2 you could play as peach, they didn't make some lazy excuse they couldn't do that.
The new mario galaxy is another lazy recycled game. It looks identical to the first. Oh no, this one has yoshi.

Although the Mario Bros. games may be very similar, people still buy them like crazy. Part of the reason people pick up games like the New Super Mario Bros. Wii is because they know they wont be let down by the game play or classic story line. They just want something a little different. Nintendo, being the genius that it is, has realized that its better to make games that they know people will like than games that only appeal to one crowd. They recycle because it sells, makes sense, recycling is actually a good thing... why do you think you see 30 year olds with mario bros ringtones on their cell. Halo, Gears of War, and Call of Duty all have the same idea, if it worked so well the first time, lets not change thing too much. and they still sell Millions... think about it
