Media Understands Games Are Not to Blame! |

For quite some time now the mainstream media has been going along with people like Jack Thompson in blaming video games for all that is wrong with the world. Well, today I was pleasantly surprised to see that times have changed - at least here in Vancouver B.C. As I was flipping through the pages of The Province, I happened to notice the word "video games." It was an opinion piece by Lydia Lovric, entitled "If you're going to play video games be ready to take the consequences."Alright, I'll be honest. When I saw that I expected the worst. However, the article was exactly the opposite of what I thought it would be. It wasn't a woman telling us that Grand Theft Auto was evil, it was a woman telling us that she too had been addicted to gaming and that the games are not causing people to screw up in life.
Lovric talks of how she started out with small-time games like Pac Man and Frogger and slowly evolved to playing Super Mario Bros. on her Nintendo. As she grew, RPGs began to take hold of her. Then her husband introduced her to Age of Empires II and Lovric was hooked.
"I played for hours at a time, despite finger cramps, backaches and bleary eyes. [...] But I would never blame the game-makers for creating such a wonderfully addictive game. That would just be... stupid. It's all too easy to point the finger. No one wants to accept personal responsibility any more. So we have lawsuits against the makers of Grand Theft Auto because we're a sue-happy society. A teenager steals a car, shoots police and somehow a game is to blame?"
You know what, she's right. If you're addicted to games, that's not the developer's fault. You have a problem. If you go out and kill a person after playing Manhunt, it's not the developer's fault. You have a problem. If you go out and think you're a counter-terrorist who knows how to work a gun because you played Counter-Strike, it's not the developer's fault. You have a problem. If you think that "1337" and "noob" are real words you can use in an English class... I think you see where I'm going with this.
Lovric also talks of the 13-year old Chinese boy who committed suicide after playing World of Warcraft for 36 hours straight. Why'd he jump to his death? He thought he could join the heroes in the game by doing so. His parents are now suing the company who distributes the game in China.
"Now I'm sorry that the boy is dead, but I fail to see how the distributor is to blame. Millions of people around the world play video and computer games; most realize that the "heroes" in these games are purely fictitious. Perhaps it helps the parents to try to assign blame to make sense of this tragedy. Or perhaps they're hoping a large financial settlement will ease their pain. I don't know. But if I was them, I'd be wondering how my son could play any game for 36 hours straight without me knowing or intervening."
Again, I agree. Parenting seems to be at the root of all "game-related" problems. What kind of parent allows their child to play Grand Theft Auto at the age of 10? An ignorant one. What type of parent allows their child to play 36 hours without rest? An oblivious one. If parents are not raising their children with care, or even raising them at all, there will be consequences. Look at just about any person involved in "game-related" incidents. They share one thing in common. A rocky upbringing. Sure they all played games, but guess what? It looks like they all read a book as well. As Lovric says, "If I put on a few extra pounds because I can't say no to Krispy Kremes, is it the doughnut-maker's fault? If I choose to drink and drive, can I blame the bartender?"
Lovric concludes that games are fun, but should be played in moderation - as should everything.
"As for my computer game addiction, after getting hooked on Call of Duty, I realized that I was wasting far too much time on gaming. Everything in moderation. Games can be fun, but my life was not enriched in any meaningful way. Now that I have a baby, the only games I have time for are peek-a-boo and pat-a-cake. And that's fine by me."

We seriously need more people like this speaking out against stupidity, and people trying to pass off the blame to major companies. Like that lady who sued McDonalds because she spilled coffee in her lap. As many times as I hear about that case I still have absolutely no idea how she could have won that case unless she made a pact with the devil or something.

Europe has person that...Well, doing nothing too much.
Africa has nothing, and thats not much, which mean we should help them first to have something to do when doing nothing too much.

I agree completely! You cant simply blame a game, just like you cant blame apple for you going deaf. (lower the volume retard....)
Everyone just loves to sue because trhey are lazy ass peopel and its an easy way to get money and they also cant accept that something si their own fault.
I play games instead of studying sometimes, I dont blame the games for making me fail tests, cuz they didnt make em fail.
Its like the old phrase, "The devil made me do it!"
Well Im glad some older people realize this and can get their word out there. Hopefully soon, everyone will realize that games are good at a good dosage.

but those people who get mad and dont play em, have no way to release stress. i think thats why GTA:LCS came out for psp. so people can have PORTABLE stress relievers. or just to run over hookers and get your money back. either way, hilary is still a *****cake

If you look in the right places you can find many articles that provide proof that video games are not to blame and even help kids. Try googling "surgeons who play video games". Also I guarantee that these articles will not change anything since if you show them to someone who thinks otherwise they will say something like: "well, that's just one person." *sigh*
O and I'd hit that.

i'm going to have to disagree with that statement.. i have written many papers for my english composition classes on the language of leet of the internet subculture and the extension and evolution of the english language as an effect. they are real words.
remember the word "Quiz" was not a real word untill one man made it up, and in 24 hours made it a word. (however, there isn;t much supports for hat theory but you get mt meaning here.)

The title should read more like, "One woman from one newspaper understands games are not to blame". Less catchy, but more true.

Well I'm kidding, she has a point. Parents love pointing the finger when its their fault in the first place. Who really lets a 10 year old play GTA, Doom, and Halo. Well a neglectful one.

You guys really need to get laid.
Anyways, I whole-heartedly agree with most everything she was talking about.
Also, you can sue the bartender if you drive drunk off his beer. ^_^ (which just shows what a sue happy land we are in)

oh, and I agree with #27, this ladys opinion doesnt mean squat. yea, its good to hear someone from the media is on our side, but it doesnt matter. in the end, its the game companys, and us gamers(to a certain extent) that lose.

Anyways, I did a presentation in university on why videogames should not be seen as bad, or at least no worse then movies. The response was very positive and I don't think we have anything to worry about after the baby boomers die off. This generation knows what it's about, it's just the old people who are closed minded to all new things and see video games as the spawn of satan, once they are gone, rock on....

Feminists today are merely "womyn" who have forgotten what they are fighting for. And how to spell.
As a young female who has never felt oppressed in this supposedly male-dominated, patriarchal society, the dogma espoused by present-day feminism holds little appeal.
Unfortunately, many feminists today seem more intent on bashing men than in promoting equality of the sexes.
The scales have turned, so much so that it is now the male population that is often discriminated against.
One need only recall Ontario's unmourned Employment Equity Act - which not only sanctioned but demanded the discrimination of white males - to understand the imbalance.
Not long ago, Wilfrid Laurier University advertised for a teaching position making it quite clear that men need not apply. They were not alone in this regard. Many employers actively sought out females in recent years to fill positions, regardless of whether there may have been men who were better qualified. Imagine the frenzy that would result if an employer declared that only male applicants would be considered for a job.
But many feminists refuse to see the inherent problems that stem from this kind of militant feminism.
My sister's friend recently recounted her experience of surviving a course in "Women's Study" while at university.
After listening to her professor lecture on and on about the persecution of women in society today, this young female raised her hand to make a point. When she told her professor she had never felt oppressed, the teacher snidely replied, "Well, isn't that nice for you."
It's ironic that it's often feminists who so readily discount the opinions of other women simply because the views are in conflict with feminist ideology.
Another example: The words "Violence against women is wrong" were scrawled in chalk across my university campus a few months ago. Why not simply, "Violence is wrong"?
As I proceeded to rub off part of the message (namely, the words "against women") I received irksome glares from a number of female students who witnessed my renegade act.
The most unfortunate setback for women that can be attributed to feminism is that of the devalued stay-at-home mom.
FROWNING ON MOTHERHOOD
Rather than praising mothers who choose to make raising children their top priority, feminists have historically frowned upon them. In fact, females who forgo careers for the sake of raising kids should be applauded for their efforts and for the valuable contribution they make to society.
It's a contribution well-known feminist guru Germaine Greer now wishes she had made. As someone who once denounced motherhood as oppressive, Greer now longs for the child she never had.
Despite spending thousands of dollars on fertility treatments, Greer has been unable to conceive. She waited too long.
Sadly, she had bought into the notion that childbearing was merely a tool used by men to enslave their women.
Now, her tune has changed. "I still have pregnancy dreams, waiting with vast joy and confidence for something that will never happen," confessed Greer in a recent interview.
The importance of motherhood is also stressed in one of the songs by Canadian singer, Melanie Doane. It's a sentiment echoed by many young women today.
The song is called Happy Homemaker. In it, she sings, "Maybe I'd be happy to let it all go/Dedicate my life to making jelly moulds/Learn to cook and learn to sew/I'm a Happy Homemaker." Doane concludes, "Barefoot and pregnant/Never looked so good."
Although early feminism served a useful and vital purpose for which I am extremely grateful, there seems little similarity between the original brand of feminism and its present-day counterpart.
Make no mistake, I am a fervent supporter of equality. However, I am convinced modern feminists are interested in something other than equality. Many are simply out for revenge. This is precisely the reason I refuse to embrace feminism and am happy to declare that feminism is d

Anyways I think video games are great. I've noticed at my school that every kid who plays video games for long periods of time (games like warcraft) seems to be pretty damn smart. I dunno but its just what I've noticed.
Good article. Nothing stupid. Nothing special either though just the truth.
