Nintendo and Sega, once rivals in the videogame console manufacturers arena, have just announced a deal that will bring two of the biggest icons in gaming history together. Mario and Sonic will be joining forces to star in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Developed for Nintendo's Wii videogame system and the Nintendo DS handheld gaming system, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games marks the first time these two renowned stars have appeared together in a game.
"Mario and Sonic have been respectful rivals since the early days of video games," says Shigeru Miyamoto, Senior Managing Director and General Manager, Entertainment Analysis and Development Division, Nintendo Co., Ltd.. "In fact, for a long time they have been discussing the possibility of one day competing against each other. Now that they have been given the perfect opportunity to meet at the Olympic Games, we may finally learn who is actually faster, Mario or Sonic?"
That's pretty much the question that the game hopes to answer. In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, players will compete in events that take place in environments based on the official venues of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Gamers will be also be able to compete as or against characters from both Mario and Sonic's respective worlds. Expect the game to hit stores by Christmas of this year.

Please dont let this be some kind of April fools ; ; I dont think my heart could take it
although this announcement is very awesome, it's kinda incredulous pairing these two worlds together. And if they're doing Olympic games, then that means track & field type of events will be established. What's Mario going to do up against Sonic with a 100M dash or ANY running event in general? Wear rocket shoes? Or hell, maybe he can pilot an FZero car while Sonic runs normally... or maybe Sonic will just humor him and jog lightly....
I think you're looking a bit too deeply into this; they'll probably just have different stats depending on the characters and deviate from the back stories to make things somewhat even. I sincerely hope this isn't an early April Fools joke, because this game sounds awesome.
I went to Sega's site to check this out and found this game featured front and centre. Unless a huge chunk of the industry is out to get us, this is definitely valid.
Whether that is good or not, it's up to you.

(honestly though, for someone like me in their mid 20s, this is like the second coming, this is the thing that when i was younger was understood to never happen....ever)

in the games, especially sonic 1, sonic wasn't so much faster than mario. it was only the cartoons that portrayed sonic as being able to run at +sonic speeds, plus if you remember the cartoons and games... sonic could also stand on top of a plane and could not get blown off
also regarding a comment below about tom + jerry.... remember it is sonic and mario against each over...still rivals...not all kissy huggy friends
I take it you didn't play Sonic Adventure or Sonic Heroes. I tell you, he was damn fast in those.
