Lifesa Trip on Nintendo DS |
Ó

Life is full of surprises and no matter how you much you try to prepare, you'll never know what will happen next. This is the framework for mathematician John Conway's Game of Life. In this 1970 game, there are no players and no winning or losing. And just like life, the rules are simple.
DynamicStability has now implemented Conway's Game of Life into the Nintendo DS with Lifesa Trip. While the touchscreen doesn't work when zoomed or scrolled, DS owners can still tinker with this homebrew game to see the amazing patterns emerge. DynamicStability's Lifesa Trip may look like a virtual kaleidoscope, but as the author said, "You can explore this game for years and never EVER see the same thing twice."

The latest version is not yet as trippy as its first release - although I'm pretty sure DynamicStability's working on that right now - and includes the above full menu. Other changes and controls to the latest Lifesa Trip, straight from the developer, are:
- Mirror Mode: 5 choices.
- Point Type: 6 choices and the ability to drawn your own 5×5 patterns. Between the neighbor weights.
- Color Cycling: The B in the upper left will switch between Base, Cell, or All for color cycling.
- Colors ranges are chosen with the –Red++ switches with From and To colors, they will fade up and down between these. R/G/B can be knocked out of sync by using different ranges, or by changing the colors with the RGB sliders on the right side during cycling.
- Enable Cycling by touching the C above the B, which will turn into an O and start the colors at their lowest values. If using All mode, try changing the LIV/DIE colors so they are not always the same color.
- The speed of cycling can be from 0 (fastest) to 9 by using the -4+ slider in the upper right.
- Fill Option: Click the F in the upper right. This will fill the entire screen with your pattern drawn between he neighbor weights.
- X Ray: Press the little X to enable automatic X-Ray mode. This basically gives a different view on the life forms you create. It clears the screen between each iteration.
- Enable/Disable border wrapping. Click the + in the upper right. + = No Borders (wrapping) - = Borders (brick wall)
- To pause the game, click the || button near the top of the screen, the large X button will then change to a step button.
- Use the large X button to clear and redraw all cells in the current live color, hold it or combine with auto xray for a cool view.
- Use the large K button to kill all life, but leave the drawing alone. Use K + X to clear and kill all.
- You can now draw when in menu mode by using the large open black space with the + indicating the CENTER of the screen (used translation).
- You can also have the screen swapped (so lifes on the top screen) and hit R to allow you to draw normally while in the menu, good for a desktop pet. You must hit R again to exit this mode, or the modes will stay switched when hitting L.
- The rules and Neighbor weights allow a ton of customizability, but they are for experienced users. You can hit the R in the very lower left to reset all defaults.
- Zoom in/out with X/Y
- Scroll the zoomed views with the DPad.
- Set any delay you want with A/B.
- Screenshot with Select, restart wifc2.nds with Start.
