LEGO Batman Makes Watchdog Group's List of Terrible Toys - Image 1

Webcomic by Steve Napierski of Dueling Analogs

For once, Grand Theft Auto didn't make it into a list of things not to buy your kids - specifically, the TOADY (Toys Oppressive and Destructive to Young Children). So what did make the list? Lego Batman (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PSP, Wii, DS).

Say what?

Yes, Lego Batman. The list, compiled by the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (otherwise known as CCFC, the guys who were so gung-ho against Manhunt 2 and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City). So what did Lego Batman do to incur their wrathful ire? Here are the reasons they stated:

How do you turn the ultimate creative toy into a symbol of commercialized childhood?  Begin by partnering with media companies to sell that toy in branded kits designed for recreating movies like Star Wars, rather than creative construction.

Then, dispense with hands-on building altogether by turning your toy into a video game so that instead of deciding what to build next, children choose which cyber weapons to use to beat up their opponent.

Finally, ignore the fact it was rated suitable for ages 10 & up and partner with McDonaldÂ’s for a Happy Meal toy giveaway to simultaneously promote the video game, junk food, and the violent Dark Knight movie series to preschoolers.

How evil! Sounds like they ran out of games to pick on. Wait till GTA: Chinatown Wars comes out, hoo boy.

Were they expecting the TV series w/ Adam West?

Yep. One Bad@SS game you got there. There basically claiming Lego is set out to kill creativity in kids. I find that that as trite as claiming paint-by-numbers ruined the next great painter. Just now we the world will miss the next great architect to build with blocks.

I like clicking the comment list to read all the stupid comments i've posted... some really poor attempts of comedy.

» Errrr....

"Cyber Weapons?"

Do metal throwing bats and slightly advanced grappeling hooks count as "cyber weapons" now?

If so, then a Playstation 3 must be a doomsday device.

I mean ccfc is pretty good. We really dont need all this commercializati on, and lego video games aren't good. Regular lego is better as it allows for creativity and doesn't promote violence.

» well

i totally agree that we don't need commercializati on, but just because lego games aren't good doesn't mean they deserve to be on a list called "Toys Oppressive and Destructive to Young Children."

ccfc is a political group, and if they're going to raise "awareness" about video games, they should at least be fair about their assessments of games. what they said about lego batman was totally uncalled for.

» I liked this game!

I thought the Lego Batman game along with the Star Wars Triolgy was pretty good. I have been playing both of them for a while now, and I am an old school gamer (36 yrs)...

It's up to the parents to control what there children read, watch, etc.. at least until they are 18 yrs old... or is it 16?

not us...

Ya know. Back when I was into LEGOs they didn't do all this branded stuff. So I built my own Star Wars vehicles with them and had pretend battles. I didn't need any prompting to do this and I'm sure kids today do the exact same thing with or without prompting.

Being creative and building things without instruction is fun and satisfying. Being able to play animated versions of LEGO mini-figs is also fun but not so satisfying to me.

Personally I think there's room for LEGOs and LEGO video games in a healthy childhood as long as the parents heed the suggested toy and game age ratings.

As a kid I loved McDonalds toys, but as an adult I'd have to agree with CCFC on the "junk food" comment. On the other hand, a little research goes a long way, LEGO Batman is mostly based on the 90's cartoon series and is not a Dark Knight tie in. Not doing proper research just makes them sound like ignorant, opinionated, loud mouths.

» but...

playing with Lego bricks = possibility of kid to end up dead from swallowing Lego bricks...

playing with Lego Batman the game = death of a bunch of Lego characters, slightly harmful to a child's creativity, a bit of violence, kid lives to see another day...

I take Lego Batman, then...

» or the next great musician?

guitar hero is even worse! if kids spent half the energy into a REAL instrument as they do guitar lameo, there would be a musical Renaissance! i saw a while back that someone was creating a real guitar hero game that plugs into a real guitar and teaches you how to actually play! now that would be sweet.....

video games like these are good for people who has less imagination since it's already visualized for them. :)

Anyway, creating and assembling a whole lego stuff is both sweet and awesome. Plus it'll enhance your creativity and a whole lot of thinking with imagination. Definitely good for kids.

As for both young and old, games like these are fun but then again I suggest the old school fun for kids and these for teens or adults. lol And don't forget parental guidance for kids when playing lego bricks just in case something goes wrong, the kid swallows a brick or something. lol.

I know my kids try to build the lego batman toys out of lego so they can recreate the scenes that they just played. so then they can have a chance to work their mind twice

I'm sure your kid's will grow up to geniuses, like you!!

P.S. You have a man-gina, you douche-lick!!

» Wow...

Bob Joe, two first names, just like Ricky Bobby! Do you like nascar too? You don't live in a trailer do you? Anyway lets cut the sh1t, if you need the CCFC to tell you whats good for your kids and whats not then you're already a total EPIC FAILURE as a parent. Congrats, give yourself a big pat on the back idiot. Way to think for yourself you mindless fk1ng day-walking-d1ckless-douche-lick. Im sure you'll be the moron parent on CNN blaming the CCFC if your kid goes wacko and then says it was because of video games, all because you wanted to outsource your parenting and thinking to the CCFC. Parent of the Year right here!!

If you have any kids that aren't mentally retarded then I'd be surprised because you sound like you could use a brain transfusion about now.

"Lego games aren't good"? Obviously you haven't played any of them, because they're simple light hearted fun action games that use cute graphics, humor and puzzles entertain the player and the violence (if you could call it that) is as harmless as something from old school looney toons. Quit being such a f-king *****!

What is wrong with you? Seriously, you're being a ***** for no reason. What is so wrong in your life that such a simple, nonconfrontatio nal comment (3 of them, actually) is met with such ire? Go take some anger management classes or something, before you hurt someone. Sheesh.

by Jtcp - 2009-01-27 16:16
» imapterodactyl (translation: pu$$y)

3 comments, well congrats, make it 4 now.

Whats wrong? Surprisingly nothing, life's great actually, the only downside is that you've got idiot parents like BobJoe floating around in the world who look to political organizations to tell him how to raise his kids. So as you can see there's a reason. I do want to compliment you on your use of the word "ire" as it is a word that I like. About the anger issue, I fail to see where you could transcribe any anger from my comments. Don't let the insults fool you I'm very calm, idiots just need to be herded along.

P.s. There is a layer of satire to this as well.

by Darkotic948 - 2009-01-27 21:08
» Exactly

Lego games are really fun, I love the Lego Star Wars complete saga game, gives you a quick rundown of each episode in less the time it takes to watch the movie and you get the basic story while having simple, challenging fun. It requires puzzle solving and things of that nature. And if this one is anything like that one, it would have puzzle related things and problem solving situations which would expand a child's mind on a scale which they could understand.
