The Japanese market is significant to the video games industry due to the high attachment rate in the region (how many games the Japanese buy). So these numbers are significant per profit numbers to console makers globally.
DS Lite - This seems to have no roof on sales and is somewhat of an anomally in Japan. At the moment this is Nintendo's cash cow and will probably continue to be this way even though the Wii has been very successful thus far. The DS Lite seems to double sell the PSP globally.
Nintendo Wii - The Wii has been very successful and will continue to be so due to Nintendo's pricing and profit models on the hardware. The recent quotes that came from Capcom said it best though. This console seems to retain the stigma of a "toy". In the end a new market is being created here and the Nintendo is going to create a new pie (especially in Japan) of "family video game time". With the current lineup Nintendo has and the future titles that have been announced the Wii will probably cool off. Its global sales already reaching half of the 360s www.vgcharts.org is a feat in itself yet it is probably due to buzz and novelty of the system. It may sell the best overall still, it is just not going to run away with the title as fast as it appears. Nintendo is doing the right thing by being cautious and skeptical of their own consoles success, having a large head would put them in a bad spot *cough* sony *cough*.
Sony PSP - Despite the fact that many self proclaimed critics and analysts online (yes im talking about people like me) the PSP sells very well globally. Developers and ramping up software titles for the PSP and we are looking at the first really big year for the handheld. Taking another look at www.vgcharts.org shows that the PSP has still sold more than twice that of the 360 (I know i like to benchmark to MS). It has been out longer and is a handheld, but let's give credit where credit is due. The PSP is an amazing piece of hardware and will probably increase slightly in sales due to the solid lineup arriving this year. My speculation is it will never catch the DS, but come on, it's Sony's first handheld.
PS3 - Too many people rant or rave about the PS3. Let's all be serious, at this point it is a little before it's time. Sony has put a lot of chips on this bet but will not loose money on its invest no matter what any MS fanny says on these boards. Here i liked what SquarEnix recently said about PS3. It won't be big until sometime in 2008, but they are probably a little off about the reason. HDTV probably wont create more next gen console sales, consumers are just a little to apathetic to care. Those are enthusiats they are talking about which probably already own a PS3/360 or will own one of either in the next 365 days. The real reason is mulifacted. 1) The consumers want good games for a $600 investment. 2) They want Bluray to be the winning format before they invest in a new technology. 3) They want the PS3 to prove its overall worth. I realize 3 is a mix of one and two but it accompanies many of the side projects Sony is working on with the PS3. PSP connectivity, the Sony online store, FW updates, etc. People are watching these things to see if the extra $1-200 is actually worth it over a 360. It should also be noted that people buying Wiis are not the same consumers that buy 360/PS3. Gaming enthusiasts bought Wii's on launch or soon after however I bet they all has plans on a PS3 or already owned a 360. Playing a Wii does not have the same effect and playing a console you can relax more with. Not only that but many mainstream gamers want a jump in technology and innovation. PS3/360 tech no innovation - Wii innovation no technology.
PS2 - The new dinosaur and a dying breed. With a rock solid lineup you will continue to see strong sales of the PS2 however numbers should do nothing but fall. Next christmas expect to see the magical $99 sign on the PSTWO and that will keep unit sales up. This console will carry the PS3 in software sales
..... along with the PSP software sales until the PS3 has a chance to get on its feet. (Don't deny it PS3 will succeed it just may not be the runaway success the previous two versions were). Sony's cashcow is still alive.
MS XBOX 360 - Ok so it's not doing well in Japan. Ok so MS is still recouping losses from the OG XBOX. Face it PS3 fannies 360 is already a success. Yes with competition 360 sales will slow down a little but as this next gen really starts hitting mainstream in the next year or two 360 will definitly turn a profit and make up for the XBOX. This division will definitly pay off for MS in the long run. 360 will continue to fail in Japan, it's just a reality of how the Japanese do business however, it is begining to break down some barriers. 360 needs some games that appear more to an Asian crowd (more than Blue Dragon) and they need more help from companies like Capcom and Square Enix to create a better global present. In my opinion of who will come first 360 is my last pick. Not that it will do the worst, I just feel as far as raw consoles sold overall (lets say 2010 - 2011) it will probably be 2nd or 3rd BUT IT WILL STILL SUCCEED AS IT ALREADY HAS. 360 owners get ready for some great exclusives and great online content.
The rest are so small they are dead consoles and handhelds. You will see them dropped from manufacturing this year or early next year in all probability. Also, if you have read this far down in my article, thanks for taking time to read my thoughts. Oh yeah, and go do something better than just reading some random persons thoughts!!
why do japanese people seem to hate anything that isn't made by nintendo..
MS shouldn't have even released 360 there lol.
I agree with almost all your analysis.
The Wii is definitely going to be the winner this generation. It's appeal and target market is so wide spread it's going to expand the gaming industry like never before. The Wii sales figures don't paint a true picture of it's success. Nintendo can't make the things fast enough.
It's up to the 360 and PS3 to duke it out for number 2. The problem I foresee for the PS3 is that the Wii has taken away their casual gamer market. Also the 360 has cemented its place in the gaming industry showing it can deliver as good if not a better gaming experience then sony at a cheaper entry price. If even if the PS3 beats the 360, sony would of taken a huge hit on their install base and key exclusive titles. If the PS3 can out sell the 360 this year it would absolutely amazing. The 360 will be throwing punches at the PS3 all year and the negative PS3 launch, high price, average sales response and current lack of good titles has them limping from gate. Major titles are going to be critical at the end of 2007. Personally I beleive without a doubt the 360 will win in 2007. The real battle heats up in mid to late 2008. Not that 2007 isn't critical for sony. We have already seen exclusives lost, titles delayed and a couple canceled. Publishers might not be so kind to sony if they are coping losses or struggling to turn a profit on game titles that have budgets the size of small movie productions. The Wii's success could even be a problem for the 360 and PS3 as cheaper development and an expected (and soon to be) larger install base woos developer to put more time and energy into a more profit friendly console.
Targeted Market:
Wii + Everyone
360 + PS2 + Xbox 1 + PC
PS3 + PS2
The PSP suffers from a small target audience, expensive price (for a handheld) and lack of quality "original" titles. Sony is working on all 3 and sales will definitely improve. It's a much better handheld when it's hacked, but obviously it's piracy problems may be one reason publishers having been flocking to it in the past.
Targeted Market:
NDS + Teen Males, Girls + Boys, Women
PSP + Teen Males
No offense to anyone outside of those, there is nothing wrong with either system.
no they buy any japan based product and the 360 isnt 1. The 360 doesnt have any games worth a purchase over therer in japan except blue dragon. the ps3 has all the rpgs in the world and nintendo has their silly little games
Now the PS3 is available in all stores in Japan.... but noone buys them... (ok... they sell ~1k more then PS2 *g*)
The expensive 60GB PS3 is much cheaper there than the cheap 20 GB model here... and it still does not sell.
Rubbish, What are all these RPG games that the PS3 has in Japan the last time I counted it was NONE as in ZERO, you are right about Blue Dragon(go look at its screenshots films etc better than just about any other RPG read the reviews) in fact their main magazine Famitsu scored it 9.9.9.10, higher than most other games that they have reviewed in a long time if you want to compare a game which is getting a lot of hype at the moment on PS3 and that is MOTOSTORM you know what that scored -
8.8.8.6
Each score is by 1 of 4 reviews and 8 is just above average one of them hated it.
The 360 is starting to sell in Japan now MS is starting its push there and the PS3 sales are not good news at(they are incredible low for Japan) all being that is being outsold by around 3 to 1 in its stronghold in fact if the trend continues look at the facts of the sales and the PS3 will be in third place eventually even in Japan where it has its best chance.
And the maker of Blue Dragon is making Lost Odyssey at this moment and also Blue Dragon 2 and that is without the other titles like LOST PLANET etc so we shall see.
Way to optimistic. I think the 360 is about 6 months behind in Japan. MS is going to have to open up their check book again to push more Japanese specific content and development. Although Lost Odyssey is going to kick some ass, they need to find some more hit titles in Japan.
I think the PS3 is selling extremely well considering there is really only one game out for it.
At the moment I can understand why you both can see the Wii winning this generation, but as an owner of a Wii I can see it failing, even though it is a very good console. At the moment the wii is in a very secure place, everybody likes the new motion innovation and thinks it is fun and great. Nintendo have done a very good job at pulling in the family market, but unfortunatly it just doesnt appeal to the 'gamer'. Sure some gamers may buy it, but will soon relise its missing features, such as lack of video playback, DVD playback, music playback, online play, graphics, lack of exclusives, no HDD, ect. So most gamers wont go for the Wii, this will then be the same for the casual gamer, as the casual gamer will buy it, but will soon relise the missing features as well, and not many people want to jump and run about all the time. If you notice most people who have a Wii were very energetic when they got it, but now treat it like any other console and just sit down and play it will minimal movement. Sure the Wii is in a very good position at the moment, but I can see it losing this generation due to its missing features.
OK, I really don't get how someone who is such a big Xbox fanboy ACTUALLY takes time out of there day to go to a PS3 blog to boost for Bill Gates. HE'S ALREADY THE RICHEST MAN IN THE WORLD, HE DOESN'T NEED YOUR DUMBASS PUBLICITY. STOP BOOSTING THE 360 LIKE ITS THE *****. The PS3 might be not selling cause it doesn't have many games...YOU ever think of that? Maybe if you give it a year like 360 had..things will change. I say in a year, the gap will be small...in two years, PS3 will catch up. By the third year, the 360 is ancient history and Playstation dominates once again. I know you guys are really happy with your 360 and the fact that after two generations of complete domination by Sony, you are finally on a competing level, but don't let it get to your head guys. I've said it a billion times, I'll say it again, Sony's PlayStation and PlayStation 2 ARE THE ONLY CONSOLES EVER TO SELL OVER 100 MILLION UNITS. PlayStation has nearly equaled, if not outsold, XBox 360's early months of release in its few months of availability. Sales have slowed down cause of the lack of games and the expensive price. There is NO POSSIBLE HUMAN WAY that 360 will do better than PS3 in the future because the Cell and Blu-Ray are a winning combination. WHY THE F**K would anybody pay for an HD-DVD Player when they can watch Blu-Ray? Hmmm...I'm gonna stop watching DVD's and go back to VCR's. Don't forget that Blu-Ray players are retailing at over one thousand dollars in stores and the PS3 costs only 700. You guys continue using your 360, we will play our PS3, and we will continue this discussion in 2010 or something. Till then, http://xbox360.qj.net/ is the link to the 360 blog. Go and bad mouth Sony there as much as you want, you don't see me coming there and talking smack about 360 or Vista, which are living proof to the fact that Microsoft gets worse and worse with every new OS or console they release.
Sory,
there is a possible human way, if stupid Microsoft fanboys start mass-producing with a Fangirl mate.
The PS3 is crap because there are no good games on it.
i dont buy a console because it has the faster processor or whatever... i buy a console, if the games on it are great.
afair the games on PS3 are not good atm.
this MAY change in the future.
I'm only going to buy a PS3 if:
#1: The price is under 300%u20AC for the 60GB version
#2: it has good games
#3: there is a way to play homebrew on it (NOT IN LINUX - the PS3 isnt even able to play a Blu-ray movie in linux)
Let's hope for paradox and their exploit
PSP is more adult, not just teens. While the DS is mainly kids
scarface_tha_se cond is a ***** I wont even read all the BS
I'm a big kid anyway so I love the system, the touch screen brings a whole new level to a lot of games. Games which just wouldn't exist on the PSP
Trauma center
Pheonix wright
Hotel Dusk
Mario vs DK 2 (brilliant puzzle game)
there is a big flaw in your statement blu ray nor hddvd will not be the future for movie distribution in 3 years the internet will be the distributer for movies in High Definition I see broadband connections being as common as telephone lines are now.
